V This invention relates to improvements in logging and indicating devices for radio receiving sets, and consists in the novel construction hereinafter disclosed.
An object of the invention is to provide a radio receiving set with a longitudinal logging chart which cooperates with an indicator associated with the tuning adjustment devices, so that data relating to the individual broadcasting stations may be charted to facilitate the accurate tuningof the instrument, the chart and indicator being so constructed as to be fully in View of the operator at all times.
Additional advantages of the construction will be apparent from the following detailed description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,

It is un erstood that the tuning adjustments 4 are effected by rotating a plurality of variable condensers 3, 4 and 5, said condensers being connected in the radio circuits in the usual manner, and, for the sake of clearness of illustration, the circuits and tubes have been omitted from the drawings.
Each condenser has a rotor shaft 6 which shafts are arranged transversely of the case in parallel alinement. Each rotor shaft of the respective variable condenser has a worm gear 7. Each of said worm gears 7 meshes with a corresponding worm 8 carried co-ax- 1926. Serial No. 113,628.
ially' by a shaft- 9 at spaced intervals on said shaft, so that, upon the rotation of the shaft 9, the rotary motion of said shaft is imparted to the rotor shaft of the variable condensers to effect the tuning of the instrument.
The shaft 9 is rotated from a shaft 10 that extends at right angles thereto and the outer end of which projects through the panel 2 and is equipped with a knob 11 for manually rotating the shaft 10. The rotary motion of the shaft 10 is transmitted to the shaft 9 by a gear connection comprising a beveled gear 12 on the inner end of the shaft 10 which meshes with a beveled gear 13 on the end of the shaft 9. The direct rotation of the shaft 10 by means of manipulating the rod 11 is for the finer adjustment of the variable condenser. For a more rapid or coarse adjustment, a secondary knob 14 is provided, said knob being operatively connected with a car 15 that meshes with a pinion 16 carried by the forward end of the shaft 10, it being understood that the gear ratio between the gear 15 and the pinion 16 may be of the desired relationship to accomplish any predetermined difference in speed of rotation of the shaft 10, as compared with the speed of rotation of the knob 14.
The hub of the gear 15 is supported upon a bracket 17 that extends upwardly from the bottom wall of the case, and suitable brackets 18, 19 and 20, also supported by the bottom wall of the case, provide supports for the shaft 10 and the two extremities of the shaft 9 respectively.
The chart of the logging device comprises a frame 21 that is. attached to the front face of the panel 2 at any suitable position thereon. The frameis provided with an intermediate longitudinal slot 22, on each side of which is a recess 23, said recesses being adapted to receive longitudinal strips 24 and 25 of cardboard or any other suitable material to receive printed or Written data. Each of the strips 24 and 25 is divided into alined spaces formed by a series of parallel lines 26 and 27.
The data in relation to each broadcasting station is displayed in the alined spaces, such,
for instance, as the wave length on the one side of the slot 22 and the call letter of the station on the opposite side.
An indicator device cooperates with the chart and includes an arm 28 havin a threaded hub 29 said vhub being threaded over a worm shaft 30. The shaft 30 is mounted to rotate in bearings 31 disposed at opposite till prising a gear 32 on the end of the shaft 9,
which meshes with a pinion 33 on said worm shaft 30. The gear ratio between the shaft'9' and the worm shaft and its threaded connection with the indicator arm 28 is such that there is a movement of the indicator corresponding to the extent of rotation of the shaft 9 and therefore a coordination between the longitudinal position of the indicator in respect to the chart related to the position of the rotor shafts of the variable condensers.
The outer extremity of the arm 28 extends through the slot 22, said arm having an ear 34 that extends beyond the face of the chart. A plate 35 is pivoted to the ear by a pin 36 and is adapted to swing outwardly from the face of the chart, as: indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 8. At the side of the plate 35 are clips 37 between which is supported a reader panel 38 of transparent material, the reader panel extending transversely of the chart and having notches in alinement with the clips 37,
so that it is connected with the plate 35 with which it moves to the outer adjustment to permit the marking of the spaces 24 and 25.- The panel 38 is equipped with a reader line 39, which is alined with the appropriate spaces of the chart to indicate the predetermined adjustment of the instrument desired.
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that, as the variable condensers are adjusted, either by the knob 11 or the knob 14, the corresponding longitudinal travel of the indicator across the face of the chart will be accomplished, so that when the rotor shafts of the variable condensers reach a predetermined point in their rotation, the corresponding adjustment of the indicator will result. In other words, by moving the indicator to the predetermined point on the scale on the chart, it will be known by the operator that the proper adjustment of the Variable condensers has been attained. This construction, therefore, permits the operator, by bringing the indicator to rest at the proper space on the chart, to accurately determine the tuning adjustment of the instrument. It will be further understood that, as the entire chart face is visible to the operator, any selected station may be quickly and accurately tuned in after the proper tuning has first been determined and logged on the chart.
I am aware that my invention may be modified in various particulars Without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, but what i: claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a case with a plurality of lo tary variable condensers, a common shaft for operating the shafts of the variable condensers, actuators for operating said common shaft at different speeds, a longitudinally movable indicator, a stationary chart carried by one wall of the case cooperating with said indicator, and gear connections between said common'shaft and said indicator whereby the adjustment of the variable condensers is indicated.
2. In a device of the class described, tuning mechanism including a rotary shaft, a shaft for rotating. the shaft of the tuning mechanism, rotary actuators for operating said last named shaft at different speeds, a longitudinally movable indicator, a stationary chart cooperating with said indicator, and gear connections between said last named shaft and said indicator whereby the adjustment of the tuning mechanism is indicated by the change of tl1e position of the indicator in relation to said stationary chart.

In a device of the class described, tuning mechanism adjustable by rotary movement to predetermined tuning positions, a shaft for actuating said tuning mechanism, rotary actuators for said shaft whereby the same may be rotated at difierent speeds, a longitudinally movable indicator, a stationary chart cooperating with said-indicator, and gear connections between said shaft and said indicator whereby the adjustment of the tuning mechanism is indicated by the different positions of the indicator in relation to said stationary chart.

In a device of the class described, a rotary tuning member, a shaft for operating said tuning member, separate actuators connected with said shaft for operating said shaft at difl erent speeds, longitudinally movable indicator, a stationary chart cooperating with said indicator, and gear connections between the shaft and said indicator whereby the adjustment of said tuning memher is indicated by the adjustment of the indicator in respect to the stationary chart.

In a device of the class described. the combination of a case having a longitudinal slot therein, a chart arranged adjacent to said slot, a plurality of rotary tuning members, a shaft for operating said tuning members, an actuator for said shaft, a second Worm shaft operatively connected with said first named shaft, and an indicatnr mounted on said worm shaft and operable in coordination with the adjustment of said tuning members for indicatin the adjustment thereof by the position of t e indicator in respect of said chart,
