IMPROVEMENT IN CHANDELIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,573, dated Octoberll, 1875; application filed February 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIVERIUS Manse, of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chandeliers; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar character, together with such parts as 1 claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
My invention relates to adjustable self-balancing chandeliers for the burning of oil or gas.
Heretofore no reliable method was known by which one portion of a chandelier, including a desired number of lights, would serve as a weight or adjustable balance for another portion of the same chandelier, with its arms and lights of equal number and weight, where by a portion of the chandelier may be lowered at will, with increased safety and convenience, independent of additional weights or springs, which have heretofore been considered indispensable for this purpose.
Figure l is a view of chandelier constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a partial view of the same, showing a single pair of pulleys. Fig. 3 is an extended View of same chandelier as seen when a portion may be lowered for any purpose.

A represents the inner or main body of a chandelier, which may be connected with or form a part of the arms G. 13 represents the outward portion of the same chandelier, including the arms for lights, and which is connected with or may form a part of the arms or rings F. 0 represents telescopic rods or guides. 1) represents safety cord or chain. G represents arms or connecting portion for the lights of body A.
In the adjustment and use of my invention, 1 connect the two main movable parts of the chandelier by pulleys in pairs, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in such a manner that one portion of the same chandelier, including its arms and lights, will serve as a weight or balance for the other portion of the same chandelier, including its arms and lights, by which combination cause one portion of the same chandelier to move from or toward the other portion with equal or unequal rapidity.
When constructed with a pair of pulleys, as shown in Fig. 2, one portion of the same chandelier may be not more than one-halt the weight of the other portion, and the pulleys n'iay be reversed, so that the inner or main body he only one-half the weight of the other portion 'of the same chandelier, and by either adjustment one portion of the same chandelier will serve as a balance for the other portion for the purpose described.
Fig. 2 represents a single pair of pulleys connecting the two main portions of the same chandelier, by which one portion will lower the same distance that the other portion will rise, and'each portion must be of more equal weight than when used as a double pulley.
The guides or telescopic rods 0 0 may be nested together; or a single rod may be used for guiding the upper and lower movement of the two main portions of the same chandelier.
These rods, when in use, may have an indenture or elevation on one or both sides, running lengthwise, with suitable grooves or pi ns placed in the main body of chandelier, to keep the two main parts of the chandelier from revolving in all positions.
When the chandelier is used with double pulleys, the upper guide 0 may be but onehalf the length of lower guide O; or a still greater expansion or length to chandelier may be obtained by using lower guide 0, which may extend upward to a point near upper pulley-wheels 15' or canopy.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- In a chandelier constructed, substantially as set forth, so that one portion of the same, together with its arms and burners, will serve as an adjustable weight or balance for elevating or lowering the other portion of the same chandelier, including its arms and burners, the two sections combined substantially as described.
