This invention relates to coil-Winding devices and particularly to devices for winding coils to be used for armatures of dynamo-electric machines. A` feature. ofthe invention is to provide a `device of the above character that ot' simple construction and easily operated.
Another feature of the invention resides inthe provisionof a device of the above character that requires but little manual adjustmentuand reduces to ay minimum 'the time required to Wind a coil.

The sprocket Wheel 8 is formed at its periphery vwith a laterally extending flange 14. T his flangehas its inner surface tapered and constitutes a Vjaw of a cone 'clutchll The 4otherjaw 16 of cone clutch 15 has its hub 17 mounted on the Worm shaft 10. A key 18 securedfto shaft- 10 and extends through a keyway in the hub 17 of jaw 16. Hub 1T may slide along the Worm shaft 1 0 but lis preventedby key 18 from turning With respect to this Shaft. The 'periphery of hub 17 is provided With an annular groove 44.

vided with a head at one end and a nut 47 lon the other end for retaining the pin in the bracket 20. Bracket is recessed at 48 to accommodate the clutch lever 45. The upper portion of clutch lever-.45 extends around one side of theV hub 17 of the jaw 16 and carries a bolt 50 that extends through an aperture in the clutch lever. A roller 51 (see Figure 2) is rotatably mounted on' L the bolt 50 and is'positioned within the groove 44 of the hub 17. A roller support 53 is secured' by bolts 56 to the upper portion of the clutch lever 45. Roller support 53 extends around the otherside ofthe hub 17 ofthe jaw 16 and carries a bolt 54 that extends through an `aperture in the roller sup- A roller 55 is rotatably mounted on the bolt 54and is positioned within groove 44 0fv the hub 17.
Referring again to Figures 1 and 8, one end of a vertically arranged link 59 is pivotally connected to lever 45 by a bolt 57. The other end Oflink59 is pivotally connected by a bolt 58 t0 a lever 60. Lever 60 is keyed to a rock shaft 61 that rhas bearings in the pedestals 36 and'37 of the frame34. yCollars 62 are secured to the rook shaftk 61 by set screws 63 and are positioned adjacent the frame 34 for the purpose of retaining this shaft within its bearings in' theV frame 34. The rock shaft extends outwardly from each side of the frame 34 and is supported in two pedestals. Only one of these pedestals is illustrated and is designated 64. One end of this shaft is keyedrt'o a foot lever 65l and the other end is'likewise keyed toa foot lever7 not shown.

Jaw 204 is formed with an inclined guideway` 208 of v`T `cross-section. A wedge shaped jaw member 210 of T cross-section is positioned withinthe guidcway 208. guide pin 211 has one end xed within a recess in the jaw member 210 and extends through a coil compression spring 212. The spring 212 bears atone end against the jaw member/210 and at the other end against' a bracket 213 carried bythe jaw 204. The bracket 213 has an 'aperture 214 in axial alignment withthe pin 211 in orderto permit this pin to extend through the bracket 213. vrlhe spring 212 urges the jaw member 210 against a stop plate 215 secured by screws216 to the jaw 204. A stop plate 222 is secured by screws 223 to the body portion 1.97 and extends in the path of jaw member 210.
The gripping face 217 of the jaw member 210 is serrated and is arranged to cooperate `with the serrated gripping face 218 of a jaw member 220. Jaw member 220 is secured by screws221 to the body portion 197 of the `wire clamp.
In operation the` end ofthe Wire 224 tobe wound is led from reel 225. through tensioning apparat-us 226 Vto the wire clamp 192T Theendof the wireis inserted be-` tween the jaw members 210 and 220 andthe clamp screw 202 is adjusted so to cause the gripping faces of these members to grip the wire, between them.
Should the Wire commence to 'slip as the coil 4is wound,lthe` jaw member 210 moves with the wire and at the same time slides along the inclined guideway 208.v This movement of the jaw member 210 causes its gripping i'ace 217 to move inthe direction ofthe gripping face 218 until the clamping action of these gripping faces upon the wire causes the slipping of the wire to cease.

It is to be noted that, byradjiilsting' the winding blocks within the winding block holders, the winding device may be used tor wires of'va-rious sizes. Also wires having crc-sssections of various shapes, such as round, vsquare or rectangular may be wound.
It further noted that'the coils as they come from the Winding device are flat with their ksides parallel and having a number of turns as desired. In a coil-Winding machine, a revolvable member, and a clamp attached to said revolvable membeil for gripping the material to be wound, said clamp comprising a body portion, a jaw member secured to said body portion, a bar adjustably carried by said body portion, and a jaw member pivotally mounted on said bar.

In a coil-Winding machine, a revolvable member, and a clamp attached to said revolvable member, said clamp comprising a body portion, a jaw member secured to said body portion, abar carried by said body portion, a second jaw member pivotally mounted on said bar, a Wedge cooperating with said bar, and means for moving said Wedge so as to cause the bar to move and effect the gripping of the 'material to be wound by the jaw members.
12. In a. coil-Winding machine, a re- Volvable member, a Winding block holder mounted on said revolvable member, a Wind-- ing block carried by said Winding block holder, said winding block comprising a Winding portion and a reduced end portion,
and a removable unit mounted on the reduced end portion, said lunit comprising a guide Washer and a lock-nut for locking the guide Washer on the reduced end portion.

In a coil-Winding` machine, a revolvable member, a clamp secured on said revolvable member, a movable Winding block holder mounted on said revolvable member, a member connecting said winding block holder to said clamp, means for moving said connecting member Withrespect to said clamp and thereby elect movement of Vthe Winding block holder, a Winding block carried by saidvvinding block holder, said Winding block comprising a Winding portion and a reduced end portion, and a removable unit mounted on the reduced `end portion, said unitcomprising a guide Washer and a lock unit for locking the guide Washer on the reduced end portion.
14. In a coil-winding machine, a Winding bar rotatable about a transverse axis, a pair of winding block holders mounted on said Winding bar on opvosite sides of said axis of rotation, means or preventing the Winding block holders from turning about the longitudinal axis `of the Winding bar,`means for locking the Winding block holders in adjusted position on the Winding bar, and means for permitting a limited movement of one of said Winding block holders with respect to the other.
