WITNESSES INVE/ TOR ATTORNEYS N. PETERS. PHOTQ-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WINDSOR LELAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,508, dated October 5, 1,875 application filed August 14, 1875.
, view of my machine, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clamping-case. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of my machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective method of packing meats,
fruits, and other substances into cans, for pre serving the same, so closely as to exclude all air, by completely filling the cans with the substance packed therein, as will be herein-- after explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a table, from one side of which rises a standard, B, to the lower curved and slotted end of which a foot-lever, O, is pivoted. To this lever a rod, or, is pivoted, which extends up through the table-top, and is attached to a horizontal slide, 12, which is guided by the standard B, and rigidly secured to a vertically-movable plunger, D. This plunger works through horizontal guides E E, which are secured to the standard B, and it is held up by means of a spring, F, one end of which is secured to the standard B, and the other to the curved end of the lever O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. G designates a can for receiving the substance to be preserved, which can is supported, for filling, upon the table A, and it has a hole through its top for receiving the filling, and also the neck 0 of a funnel, H. When the can G is properly adjusted upon the table A, beneath the plunger 1), it is inclosed by means of a clamping-ease, J, consisting of two semicircular flanged sections hinged together, and provided with a fastening, g, for holding the sections firmly about the can. The case J will sustain the can against the strain upon it during the pressing operation. The funnel H has attached to it a trough, K, from which the meat, or other substance to be preserved, is taken and delivered a into the funnel beneath the plunger. There is also an open skirting, h, attached to the funnel, which supports it upon the can, and, as the neck of the funnel is smaller than the hole in the top of the can, air is allowed to escapefreely during the operation of presslng.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. The hinged sectional and flanged clamping-case J, constructed and adapted for the purpose specified.
2. The hopper H, having a long neck, 0, and a skirting, h, in combination with the plunger D,-in a machine for packing meats and other substances in cans, substantially as described.
In witness of the above I have hereunto set my hand this'l7th day of June, 1875.
WINDSOR LELAND.
