My presentinvention relates to brick making machines, and more particularly toan improved drier for bricks and the like.
In my copending application,.Serial No. 227,231, filed-Oct. 19, 1 928, I have described and claimed an improved method of manufacturing brick by the soft mud process, wherein the loaded pallets are collected in groups and placed in al container and which container is placed in a drier ofthe open top variety, where the bricks yon the pallets are subjected to a preliminary drying operation prior to being built into unit stacks for forming a kiln. As in the prior art, there was no satisfactory open top drier which could be advantageously utilized in connection with my improved method, as set out inthe application above referred to, I have designed the drier forming the subject Amatter of the present invention. In this drier I have utilized to the greatest extent possible the exhaust t heat from a battery of boilers,as well as utilizing heat fromsteam generated by such boilers. By thus utilizing direct heat and the exhaust heat, I obtain the greatest vetliciency from whatever fuel is utilized under the boilers Vand reducethe cost of drying bricks to a minimum. In designing this yopen top drier, I have provided therein a plurality of parallelly arranged compartments, in each ot' which is arranged a heating coil, pref-v erably located at the bottom thereof, andV at one end of each of the parallelly arranged compartmentsl provide an air inlet which conducts the waste heat from the battery of boilers into the compartment and at the other end of thecompartment I provide an outlet for such vexhaust heat and connect the Yheated air inlet chamber with the source of exhaust heat by means of an inlet fanandn connect the heated air outlet chamber with the outer atv mosphere by means of an exhaustfan. By this means, therefore, I am enabled to create a positive flow of heated air through the compartments. VEach compartment is built of a size to readily accommodate a container such as is disclosed and claimedrin my copending application, Serial No. 22.7 ,231, filed Oct. 19,1928, and each containerhasassm ciated therewith, at its top end atop of heat -insulating material. yIherefore, as each container is placed in a compartment of the open top drier forming the'subject matter of the present invention, that portion ofthe open 'tcp drier praeticay' against exitof air, and when the compartment is filled with containers, such compartment isV practically closed andair can issue therefrom only from the air outlet leading to t-heair outlet chamber.y 7 i.
