CHRISTIAN H ULTGBEN, OF PARISH OF SVINHULT, SWEDEN. I
a Town ros'r.
Application filed January 27, 1927, Serial No. 163,960, and in Sweden February 18, 1926.
' My invention pertains to improvements in tone posts, especially such as are usedin violins and similar stringed instruments; and the main object of the invention is to provide anew and improved tone post whereby any unevenness of tone and deficiency of any of the, strings is overcome, and a surprisingly new and mellow effect of tonal quality, is gained. Another object is to provide such a tone post whichcan be inserted in or applied to the instrument without sub-.
stantially reconstructing or modifying .the same. These and other objectsand advantages '15 are attained with my invention, as will become apparent from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 isa top planview of aviolin with my invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section,
i taken through the median line of the violin and showing the toneipost mounted therein;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view through the r violin, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1
Figs. 4 and 5 are elevational views of the tone post and b Fig. 6 is a plane view of the tone post.
I My improved tone post consists of a hollow a0 tube 8 made of selected wood, and having provided nearone end thereof one or more holes, preferably in the form of cutouts or notches 9 placedat the end. This tone post is mounted between the back wall 10 and the front wall 11 of the violin or instrument, preferably between the f holes 12, adjacentthe bridge 13, and beneaththe strings 14. The post is arranged so that the notch 9 is turned or directed toward the if hole, and placed under the front wall 11. Said post may also be slightly inclined forward toward said if hole, as indicated in Fig-.3, and the size of the post and of the notch can vary, according to the size and condition of the instrument.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure terposed between the front and rear walls of a violin and having a single notch provided at its upper edge, turned toward the f hole v of said violin.
2. A tone post adapted to be interposed between the front and rear walls of a violin said post consisting of a tube with slanting ends ,and'having a notch provided at its upper edge adjacent said front wall, to be directed toward one side; of said violin.
3. In combination with a violin, av tubular tone post interposed between the front and rear walls of sald violin and having a single notch,
provided at its upper edge, said notch being directed toward one side of the violin and said post being slightly inclined with said notch forward toward saidside.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
CHRISTIAN HULTGREN'.
