This invention has for its object a particularly simple and efiicient means for priming pumps, and particularly for priming the pump or centrifugal member on the intake side thereof, which means is particularly simple in construction and highly efiicient in use. The invention consists in the novel features and .in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.

698,778, filed March 11, 1924, of-which this application is in part a division.
This invention comprises, generally, :1. casing having an inlet, and an intake pipe ex-' tending from the inlet and terminating in the liquid to be pumped, a cetrifugal pump arranged in the casing, an outlet arranged at a higher level than the pump, and means for discharging a priming liquid against the pump on the intake side thereof.
1 designates the casing which may be of any suitable form, size and construction, itbeing also a receptacle for recelving the water pumped and to be circulated. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the casing 1 is formed with an intake opening 2 in its bottom and with a depending intake pipe 3 for the water to be pumped, this pipe terminating in a receptacle containing the water or fluid tov be pumped, as a dish pan, when the machine is used in connection with a dish washingapparatus. The pump is a centrifugal pump and comprises a rotor or pump wheel l arranged adjacent the bottom of the casing 1 and coaxially with the intake opening 2, the pump wheel having blades 5 on the low-' er or intake side thereof, which plates project from the lower side of a discoidal body.
Usually the vanes 5 are curved in order to facilitate the centrifugal action.

The pump wheel 4: is mounted upon a suitable shaft 8 actuated in any suitable manner as in my pending application referred to. It is usually actuated by a motor as 9 arranged at the top of the casing with its axis coincident with the axis of the pump wheel 4, so that, the pump wheel is driven directly by the rotor of the motor.
By this construction the upper end of the rotor shaft of the motor is available for a coupling and a flexible shaft for carrying tools as scrubbing tools.
The means for priming the pump is arranged to discharge against the intake side of the pump wheel 1, and as here shown in cludes a pipe or nozzle 10 terminating in the water up through the empty pipe 3,
but by turning on the water to prime the pump, so that, a jet of water is discharged into the fan on the intake side thereof, sufficient suction is created to lift the water from the pan through the intake pipe .without first filling up the pipe and submerging the pump wheel.
What I claim is 1. In a centrifugal pump, a case, a rotor in the case, an unobstructed open inlet pipe arranged coaxially with the rotor and extend ing downwardly from the case, the case having an outlet above the rotor, a pipe arranged to discharge liquid upon the inlet side of the rotor directly against the rotor for the purpose of evacuating air from the unobstructed inlet pipe and thereby raising the water therein until it reaches the rotor and the pump.

In a centrifugal pump, a case enclosing a chamber having an inlet pipe leading into its bottom, a rotor arranged in the case coaxially with the inlet pipe, the case being formed with a chamber extending circumferentially around the rotor and the rotor arranged relatively to said chamber to discharge throughout its periphery into the chamber, the case having an outlet arranged at a higher level than the rotor and means to discharge a liquid into the rotor on the intake side thereof and directly against the same. the inlet being an unobstructed pipe depending from the bottom of the case.
3. In a centrifugal pump, a case having an open unobstructed inlet pipe at its lower end, a rotor arranged in the case coaxially with the intake pipe and arranged to discharge into the case, the case also having an outlet at a higher level than the rotor and means for discharging water into the rotor to form a water seal in the case above the rotor.
4. In a centrifugal pump, a chamber having an inlet in the bottom, a rotor arranged coaxially with the inlet, the chamber being arranged to drain completely when the amp stops, an outlet for the chamber locate at a higher level than the rotor and a pipe eonnected with some outside source arran d to direct a stream of water into the rotor irectly against the face of the same.
5. In a centrifugal pump, a casing havin an intake opening and an intake pipe throng which water is to be pumped connected at one end to said opening, a pump wheel mounted in the casin in line with and adjacent the intake opening, and means for discharging a priming liquid through said intake opening against t e pump wheel, the casing having an outlet arranged on the opposite side of the pump wheel to that on which the intake is located.
6. In a centrifugal pump, a casing having an intake opening in its bottom, an intake pipe depending from said opening, a centrifugal propeller wheel arranged in the casing coaxially with the intake opening, the casin having an outlet located above the wheel, and means for discharging a priming fluid into the intake opening against the pump wheel.
