DISPENSING APPARATUS.
This invention relates to an improvement in a dispensing apparatus being directed more particularly to a water cooler, of the so-called inverted water bottle type, which is provided with means for agitating the liquid in the cooler receptacle periodically as the outlet spigotis operated for drawing off the cooled cooler contents.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of an agitator for liquid dispensing devices.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of a motor driven agitator for liquid dispensing devices constructed in a manner whereby the operation of the agitator is automatically started and stopped periodically as the. outlet spigot of the cooler is operated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character .described which is neat in appearance, cheap and simple of construction and manufacture, and highly efficient in operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel means for locking the agitator motor against running and releasing the motor for operation as desired.
Further novel features of construction and improved results of the invention will appear from the following description and in the accompanying drawings.

At the present time it is the common practice to sell at drug store fountains and like places cooled drinks which may be made from the pulp of different fruits.
In the liquid forming these drinks there is present a large portion of the pulp of the fruit from which the drinks are made and it has been found advisable to agitate this liquid from time to time.

At the point where the shaft asses through the walls of the container 5 and the outer wall 15 of the cooler, suitable packing arrangement is provided in the form of screw threadably mounted and adjustable members 19 which are adapted to exert an adjustable pressure against the packing 20. I "In the form of invention appearing in the drawings, the agitator driving motor F is in the form of a spring clock mounted and suitably supported upon brackets 21 on the outer face of the cooler at a point just above the spigot D. For the purpose of lending a pleasing appearance to the device, the motor is provided with a casing a chain of gears 25, 26 and '27, the gelrfl? being connected directly with the inner end i V of the propeller shaft.
The motor locking-and releasing device G comprises a rod aving a vertical portion 28 attached to the valve operating huh ton 11 and a horizontal portion 29, the inner end of which is flattened and enlarged as at 30, and is adapted to reciprocate throu h a suitahleopenlimg in the rearframe131 ofthe clock works. A reduced portion 32 otf \this member passes inwardly and through a suit- .able iopening 38 in the housing and through another suitable opening 34 in the front frame member 35 of the clock works. .It lhe seen, however, that whenever the valve operating button 11 is pushed inward- Lly for withdrawing liquid from the cooler container, that-the knife edge 36 of the motor locking member lis carried inwardly and out of engagement with the teeth of the gear 35, thus permitting the clock spring to start the rotation of the gearshand consequently whirl the agitator propeller E, thus causing an agitation of the liquid in the container.
It will be readily understood that the clock spring can be of a size :so that when cmce wound it will have sufficientistrength to continue to rotate the agitator propeller untill .a given amount of liquid has been withdrawn from the cooler.
It will further be readily nnderstood that an electric motor or other suitable power means could be substiwted for the clock works wiibhout departing from the spimirt of the invention The particular :form of cooler shown in Figure 1 of the drawings is that known :as the drwerzted water bottle type, the main liquid supply being carried :by the bottle 38 which is inverted upon the upper end of the cooler, the neck :of the bottle extending downwardly through the opening 39 which comprises the upper end of the container 0. The cooler is provided with a cover 40 provided with a door 41 whereby ice can be inserted into the ice chamber B. .As is comanon in :coolers of this character, a spigot is provided for draining the liquid from the Reifem'i now to Figure 5 of the drawings it wil be seen that the main difference in'construction appears to be the manner of lock' and releasi the driving motor.
In t 1e form of tie invention the cooler construction is exactly similar to that appearing in the preferred form and the same motor construction is also used.
The shaft 17 is provided with the packing '20 and adjustable packing nut 19 at the point where the shaft passes'thnough the outer wall 15 of the cooler. The packing construction at the point where the shaft passes through the wall of the container is slightly dilfferent. Inthis instance the adjustable packing nut 19 is screw threaded in the elongated hearing 40, whichbeazriarg is in turn screw threadably mounted in an opening through the side of the container. To prevent leakage through the opening in the container wall, additional packing is provided in the form of internal mndrexternal washers 41 anda nut 42.
A gear 43 fastened at 44 so as to rotate with the shaft 17 is positioned on the shazfit intermediate the propeller and the inner end of the elongated bearing 40. The valve opera-ting button 11 is provided with a rod 45 which extends through the outlet pipe 1-0 and is adapted to reciprocate upon the movementof the valve button. Mounted upon the inner end of this rod is an upwardly extending guide member 46, the upper end of which is provided with an opening 47 shaft and the valve rod 45, The *knife blade 48 is adapted for reciprocation within the forked end 51 01f the guide 49 to prevent rocking motion of the blade.
By reason of the two guides 46 and 49, the knife blade will reciprocate in a predotermined vertical plane so as to always properly engage with and be easily from teeth of the propeller gear wheel 43.
It will be readily apparent that asthe valve operating button 11 is pushed inwardly to draw liquid from the container C, that the knife blade 48 will be moved inwardly sutieiently far to become disengaged with the gear 43, thus to permit the motor to whirl the propeller valve and bring about an agitation of the liquid in the cooling-container C.
Having thus described my invention, what 7 disengaged 1 III;
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a liquid cooler, a propeller agitator for the liquid, said propeller mounted upon a horizontal shaft hav ing connection externally of the cooler with a motor, a valve positioned adjacent said motor for controlling the withdrawal of liquid from the cooler, and a lock ba'r carried by said valve and having connection with the said motor for locking it against running, whereby said lock bar is moved out of engagement with the motor when the valve is moved to an open position.
2. A liquid cooling and dispensing apparatus, comprising a container for the liquid, a reciprocating; valve for controlling the discharge of liquid from the container, a propeller agitator arranged in said container, and mounted upon a horizontal shaft having external connection with a motor, a gear mounted on said shaft in said container, said valve having a rod extending into the container beneath said shaft, a lock carried by said valve shaft and normally having locking engagement with the teeth of said gear, and said lock adapted to be moved outof engagement with the propeller shaft gear when the valve is opened, whereby the motor actuates the propeller when liquid is being drawn from the container.
8. An apparatus for dispensing liquids comprising a container for the liquid, at
draw-off valve, an agitator mounted upon a horizontal shaft and connected to a motor, a lock member carried by the valve and in engagement with the motor for locking the motor against running when the valve is in closed position. 1
4. An apparatus for dispensing liquids comprising a container for the liquid, a draw-off valve, a shaft in the container, an agitator on said shaft, a motor for driving the shaft, a gear on the shaft, and means carried by the valve engaging the gear for locking the motor against running when the valve is in closed position. 7
