J. L. GIBSON CHECK VALVE Filed Dec. 16, 1925 mid N701? JZAnIQJson it A TTORNEY Patented Sept. 11 1928 UNITED srarr s JOHN I1. GIBSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CHECK VALVE.
Application filed December 16, 1925. Serial No. 75,768.
This invention relates to improvements in check valves for automatically controlling the flow of liquids from a pump, the latter acting at each pulsation to forcibly discharge the liquid through a passage, thereby lifting the valve off its seat, and permitting the returnthereof by gravity to prevent back-flow of the liquid. Y
The objects of the present inventionare to provide means for controlling the terminal opening and closing movements of the valve and to cause in connection therewith a slight intermittent rotation of the valve to prevent excessive wear on the engaging parts.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference is had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various features of the invention are more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing, Figure 1 shows a sectional view of the valve body with its valve positioned somewhat above its seat and constructed in accordance with the present invention. Figure 2 is a view showing the bottom of the valve.
Numeral 10 of the drawing represents a valve body of ordinary construction having the side connection flanges 11 and the detachable yoke 12, the latter being formed with a stuffing box 13 provided with a gland 14 engaging the adjustable stop-rod 15.
The valve body is provided with a discharge passage 16 having at its upper end a seat 17 of the usual type and adapted to be engaged by the valve face 18 of the valve 19. Projecting from the valve face are a series of guiding fins 20 which slidably engage the valve passage 16, and at its opposite or upper end the valve is provided with a stop'member 21 arranged to engage a corresponding stop member 21 on the stop-rod 15, the latter having a projecting stem 22 which slidably engages as a guide the side walls of a perforation formed in the upper end of the valve, a vent hole 22 being provided through the wall of the perforation to permit the escape of liquid collecting below the stem 22 of the stop-rod. At its-upper end the stop-rod 15 is provided with a threaded portion 23, engaging a correspondingly threaded perforation in the yoke 12, a squared portion 24 at the extreme outer endof the stop-rodprovides means for rotating said rod by the use Recesses or pockets 25 are formed in the valve face 18, the same being concentrically disposed therewith and lengthwise elongated with respect to said face, and provided with inwardly inclined bottom walls 26 extending from the face of the valve to the vertical end wall 26, the deeper portion of the pockets being indicated by the more heavily shaded lines shown in Fig. 2. These pockets are disposed immediatcly opposite the seat 17 of the valvebody, and when the valve is seated the pockets therein form closed chambers having inclined bottom walls or vanes.
As the liquid under pressure flows through the passage 16 and raises the'valve, it continues its flow between the valve face and seat and enters the several pockets,.engaging the inclined bottom walls or vanes thereof and by reaction thereon tends to rotate said valve about its axis, the extent of rotation depend ing upon the pressure of the flow of liquid. Also, as the pressure of the liquid between the valve face and seat diminishes under the reduced pulsating action of the pump and the valve falls against its seat by gravity, its terminal movement is checked or cushioned by the resistance offered to the escape of the liquid from the pockets, the air normally contained in the liquid together with that trapped within the pockets serving additi0n ally to increase the cushioning effect at this point.
As the pockets are closed by the closing action of the valve, it will be clear that when the valve is seated it will receive no rotating or disturbing efllect from the pockets, the latter operating only when the valve begins and retains its open position with respect to its seat.
At the termination of the upward movement of the valve, the stop members 21 and 21 are cushioned with respect to each other by the action of the groove 27 formed in the upper of said members, the said action in connection with the entrapped air and water being similar to that described for the pockets within the valve face.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: V
