Another object consists in providing a device of this character, which may be easily and quickly assembled for operation and disassembled for cleaning, repair or replacement.
Another object consists in providing certain improvements in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts whereby the above named and other ob]ects may be effectively attained.
Machines of-this character are designed to operate u on rubber compounds including various su stances during the processof reclaiming the rubber and these materials vary greatly in consistency. Consequently, it has been found that strainer heads heretofore in use have not been fully adequate to handle these different materials with satisfactory results in all respects. My mvention is designed to overcome this disadvanta e.

The strainer head is adapted for use in connection with a tubing machine of standard or appropriate form and is, as will be understood by operatives in this indust intended to be secured to the cylinder iii the tubing machine in which the screw or plodder operates.
In the present instance. the cylinder is denoted by 1 and the liner for its bore by 2. 'l he screw or plodder which operates in the sang bore in the usual manner is indicated The strainer head includes an inner tubular member 4, which is flanged and threaded on its inner end for engagement with the mteriorly threaded end of the bore liner 2, as clearly indicated at 5. The arrangement is such that the inner end of the member 4 abuts a shoulder on the bore liner 2, while the forward end of the latter abuts the flange on the member 4, thereby establishing a firm inter-engagement, with the interior of the member 4 in precise alinement with the bore of the liner 2. As a result of this arrangement, the inner member 4 constitutes, in effect, a forward extension of the cylinder bore in which the forward end of tie plodder 3 is designed to operate. It is convenient, from a manufacturing point of view, to have the member 4 secured to the bore liner 2 as described, but this is not essentlal and it might be advisable in man cases to form the member 4 integral with the liner 2.
The part of the member 4, which protrudes from the cylinder 1, is provided with a multiplicity of small circular perforations f5 and the front end of the said member 18 open. g
The head also includes an outer member or acket 7 that is also cylindrical in form and has its walls provided with perforations 8, that are similar in cross section to the perforations 6 in the inner member 4.
The outer member 7 has its front and pro-- vided with an exteriorly threaded rim 9, which is fitted to be engaged by a locking nut 10. An end plate 11 fits within the front end of the outer member 7 and is held in position by being clamped between the front end of the inner member 4 and the nut 10. This end plate 11 also has a large number of circular perforations 12 formed therethrough and it will be observed that these perforations are greater in cross section at their outer part than at their inner part. The arrangement of all the perforations described is such that those in the tubular H the rear end members 4 and 7 lie at right angles to the axis of the screw 3, while those in the end plate 11 are parallel to the axis of the screw. 7 v p The inner diameter of the outer member 7 is somewhat greater than the outer diameter of the inner member 4, so that a space 13 is left between the said members w ien the outer is put over the inner, like a jaclret as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and a cylindrica screen or netting 14 is located between the said members 4 and 7 and against the interior of the outer member 7. A fiat screen 15 is located against the inner face of the end plate 11 and is clamped in position between the said plate and the inner member 4. It will be noted that as the end member 11 is fitted within the front endof the outer member 7 and clampel by-the locking'nut 10 to the front end of t e inner memeber 4, the members 4 and 7 are in spaced relation at their front ends, while a spacing rin 16 is located between the members 4 and at their rearends in order to holdthem in spaced relation at this point.
It is desirable in many cases to have the perforations 6 and 8 in the inner and outer tubular members 4 and 7 in exact alinement for the proper operation of the machine and, in order to effect this alinement and assure its retention, I provide a dowel 17 that projects from the flange on the rear part of the member 4 and is calculated to enter a corresponding recess 18 formed in the outer member 7. When the dowel enters the recess, the inner and outer members have their perforations in exact alinement.
My invention includes means for firmly securing the outer member 7 and parts carried thereby to the cylinder 1 in operative position and for permitting the expeditious removal or detachment thereof for any desired purpose. This means includes an annular plate 19, which has a series of circumferentially elongated slots 20, that are designed to receive stud bolts 21, which are threaded into and project from the front end of the cylinder 1. These arcuate slots 20 permit theplate 19 to be moved in a rotary direction a short distance on the bolts 21, and suitable nuts 22 serve to secure the plate 19 in any desired position with res ect to the bolts 21.- The inner edge of the p ate 19 is cut away as indicated at 23, thereby forming a rib 24. A clamping ring 25 has its outer periphery fashioned to correspond with the recess and rib 23, 24, on the plate 19, and is adjustably and removably secured to the plate 19 by clamps 26, which are pierced y cap screws 27 threaded into the ring 25. The operation of the .clamps is to grip the rib 24 on the plate 19 between the complementary part on the outer periphery of t e 25 and the clamps, so as to such discrepancy ma frictionall hold the ring 25 in engagement with the p ate 19.
' The inner periphery of the ring 25 has a series of se ental lugs 28 formed thereon, which over ap and mate 'with a corresponding series of segmental lugs 29, which project outwardly from the rear end of the outer tubular member 7. These lugs 28, 29, have their sides cut on radial lines and the lugs 29 are of such size and form that they can enter the spaces between the lugs 28.
This construction enables the outer tubular member 7 to he slid axially rearwardly with respect to the locking ring 25, during which movement the lugs 29 pass between the lugs 28. lVith the parts in this position and with the nuts 22 on the bolts 21 slightly loosened, the plate 19 and locking ring 25 carried thereby may be moved in a circumferential direction until thelugs 28 pass over and register with the ln s 29, thereby lockin the tubular member 7 in place on the cy inder 1. It will be observed that the slots 20 in the plate 19 are of such length as to just about permit circumferential movement of the plate 19 adequate to move the lugs 28 from lockin position in front of the lugs 29 to unlocking osition in line with the openings between t e lugs 29, and an equivalent movement in the opposite direction is also, of course, permitted. Hence, to detach the outer member 7 and parts carried thereby, it is simply necessary to insert a spike in the socket 3O fashioned in the periphery of the plate 19, loosen the nuts 22, and then swing the said plate until the free ends of the slots 20 engage the bolts 21. In this position, the tubular member 7 may be removed by an axial forward movement.
To replace the said parts, the member 7 is slid rearwardly in an axial direction and the plate 19 swung cireumferentially until the opposite ends of the slots 20 again engage the bolts 21; after which the nuts 22 may be tightened for securing the arts in place. During thisv movement of t e plate 19, the ring 25 moves with it and acts as a part thereof. However, in case the bolts 21 or slots 20 should be slightly misplaced in their operative relationship with respect to the outer tubular member 7, or, if for any other reason, the In 28 should not exactly coincide with the figs 29 when the plate 19 is turned so that the bolts 21 abut one end of the slots 20 and exactly in line with the spaces between the lugs 29 when the other ends of the slots 20 abut the bolts 21, be com nsated by loosening the screws that hol the clamps 26 in position and movin the locking ring 25 circumferentially a suitable distance in inner and outer may be tightened, thereby pausing the clamps 26 to firmly lock the mug 25 to the plate 19.
As already described, there is a space between the inner tubular member 4 and the outer member 7, while the screen 13 is also spaced from the inner member 4. As a result of this construction, the material being operated upon is broken up by the holes 6 in the inner member 4 and permitted to surge or eddy around a little between the inner and outer members before passing through the screen 13. This protects the screen and renders it more durable and effective, as well as avoiding the clogging thereof for a longer period of time. By perforating 4 and 7, the outlet for material is greatly increased, thus increasing the capacity of the machine. By increasing the cross sectional size of the outer part of the holes 12 in the end plate 11, the material is allowed to expand as it passes therethrough, thus decreasing the resistance and hence increasing the output of the machine.
It will be understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described, except as they may be included in the claims.
What I claim is:
1.. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members having each of their walls provided with a multiplicity of holes, the inner member being spaced rom the outer member, said holes in the members being disposed substantially in alinement.
2. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members having their walls provided with a multiplicity of holes disposed substantially in alinement, the inner member being spaced from the outer memher, and a cylindrical screen adjacent the interior of the outer member and spaced from the inner member.
3. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members, a separable end member for said element, all said members being provided with a multiplicity of holes, said holes in the inner and outer members being substantially in alinement, a cylindrical screen intermediate the inner and outer members and spaced from the inner member, and a flat screen intermediate the inner and end members. i
4. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of perforated members, means interposed between them at their rear ends the entire walls of the members terposed between one end for holding them in spaced relation, and a separable perforated end member for said element, said outer and end members being detachably, secured in position.
5. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer perforated members,'spacing means interposed between said members, and a separable end member seated within the outer member and in abutment with the inner member.
6. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members, spacing means interposed between said members, a separable end member seated within the outer member and in abutment with the inner member, and means engaging the outer member for securing the end member in position.
7. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members, spacing means interposed between. said members, a separable end member seated within the outer member and in abutment with the inner member, and a nut engaging the outer member for securing the end member in position.
8. A device of the character described. comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members, spacing means inof the members, said members being perforated, and a device carried by the one member and fitted to engage the other for positioning the one member with respect to the other with the perforations in each member in a predetermined relation with respect to the perforations in the other member.
9. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of inner and outer members, spacing means interposed between one end of the members, said members being perforated, one of said members being provided with a dowel and the other member with a recess ada )tcd to receive the dowel for positioning the one member with respect to the other with the perforations in each member in a predetermined relation with respect to the perforations in the other member.
10. In apparatus of the character described, a tubular strainer head and means movable in a rotary direction around the plodder for attaching the strainer head to the cylinder of the machine.
11. In apparatus of the character described, a tubular strainer head, and means movable in a rotary direction around the plodder .for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine.
12. In apparatus of the character described, a tubular strainer head, and means for attaching the strainer head to the cylinder of the machine, said means including a plate provided with elongated slots, and pro'ections on the cylinder fitted to enter sai slots, whereby the plate may be moved in a rotary direction around the plodder.
13. In. ap aratus of the character described, a tu ular strainer head, means for attachin the strainer'head to the cylinder of the mac iine, said means including a plate provided with circumferentiall elongated slots, proections on the c lin er fitted to enter said slots, whereby t e plate may be moved in a rotar direction around the plodder, and means or looking the plate in any desired position.
14. In ap aratus of the character described, a tubular strainer head, and means for attaching the strainer head to the cylinder of the machine, said means including a radially arranged projection on the strainer head and a plate secured to the cylinder and having a cut away portion for the passage of the projection tlierethrough, said plate being adigited to engage said projection adjacent sai cut away portion.
15. In ap aratus of the character de. scribed, a bular strainer head, and means for attaching and detachin the strainer head to and from the cvlin er of the machine, said means includin inwardly projecting lugs on the strainer ead, and a plate secured to the cylinder carrying outwardly projecting lugs designed to mate with the ugs on the head. 7

In ap aratus of the character described, a tubular strainer head and means for attaching and detachin the strainer head to and from the cvlin er of the machine, said means includin inwardly projecting lugs on the strainer iiead, and a plate secured to the vcylinder carrying outwardly rejecting lugs designed to mate with the ugs on the head, said plate being movable in arotary direction to bring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head, a )late secured to the cylinder carrying lugs esigned to mate with the lugs on the head, said plate being movable in arotary direction to bring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head, and means for locking theplate in an desired position.
18. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head, a plate secured to the cylinder, a member carried by the plate and rotatably adjustable with respect thereto, said member having lugs desi ed to mate with the lugs on the head, sai plate being movable in a rotary direction to bring the lugs on the member carried thereby in line withand out of line with the lugs .on the head, and means for lockin the plate in an desired position.
19. n apparatus 0 the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head, a plate carried .by the cylinder, a locking ring carried by the late and having lugs designed to mate with the lu on the head, the sa d plate being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder and the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate.
20. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means'including lugs on the strainer head, i
a plate carried b1); the cylinder, a locking ring carried by t e lplate and having lugs designed to mate wit the lu on the head, the said plate being movab e in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate, and means for locking the plate and ring in any desired adjustment.
In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attacliing and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head, a platecarried by the cylinder, a locking ring carried by the late and having lugs designed tomate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate, said ring and said plate overlap ing each other, and a clamp carried by tie one and engaging the other for locking the said late and ring in any desired adjustment wit respect to each other.
22. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head, a plate carried by the cylinder, a locking ring carried by the plate and having lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a rotary, direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking adjustment with res ect to each other, and means for locking t e plate in any desired adjustment with respect to the cylinder.-
23. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head, and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head having their sides radially disposed, and a plate secured to the cylinder carrying lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head.

In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means includin lugs on the strainer head having their si es radially disposed, and a plate secured to the cylinder carrying lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, said plate being movable in a rotary direction to bring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head.
25.- In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means includin lugs on the strainer head having their si es radially disposed, a platesecured to the cylinder carrying lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, said plate being movable in a rotary direction to bring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head, and means for lockin the plate in any desired osition.
26. n apparatus of the c aracter described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means includin lugs on the strainer head having their sides radially disposed, a plate secured to the cylinder and having rotatably adjustable lugs desi ned to mate with the lugs on the head, sai plate being movable in a rotary direction to bring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head, and means for locking the plate in any desired position.

In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head having their sides radially disposed, a plate secured to the cylinder and having rotatably adjustable lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, sald late being movable in a rotary direction to ring its lugs in line with and out of line with the lugs on the head, means for locking the plate in any desired position, with respect to the cylinder, and means for securing said rotatably adjustable lugs in any desired adjustment with respect to the plate.

In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head having their sides radially disposed, a plate carried b the cylinder, a locking ring carried by t e plate and having lugsadesigned to mate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a'rotary direction with respect to the cylinder and the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate.
29. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means includin lugs on the strainer'head having their sides radially disposed, a plate carried by the cylinder, a lockin ring carried by the plate and having lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate, and means for locking the plate and ring in any desired adjustn'icnt.
30. In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said. lugs on the strainer head means includin having their si es radially disposed, a plate carried by the cylinder, a locking ring carried by the plate and having lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate, said rin and said plate overlapping each other, and a clamp carried by the one and engaging the other for locking the said plate and ring in an desired adjustment with respect to e-acli ot er.

In apparatus of the character described, a strainer head and means for attaching and detaching the strainer head to and from the cylinder of the machine, said means including lugs on the strainer head having their sides radially disposed, a plate carried by the cylinder, a locking rin carried by t e plate and having lugs designed to mate with the lugs on the head, the said plate being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the cylinder, the said locking ring being movable in a rotary direction with respect to the plate, said ring and said plate overlapping each other, a clamp carriedby the one and engaging the other for locking the said sired adjustment with respect to each other, and means for locking the plate in any desired adjustment with respect to the cylinder.

A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element composed of plate and ring in any deinner and outer erforated members, a perforated end mem r for said element, means for removably securin the end member to the outer member, sai outer member being provided at its rear end with lateral pro'ections, which said projections are adapte to be moved into and out of en agement with rojections on the tubing mac ine for bringmg the outer member and end member into and out of operative position with respect to the machine.
33. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element including a perforated member, and a cylindrical screen exterior to said member and spaced therefrom.
34. A device of the character described comprising, a tubular element including per-..
forated inner and outer members arranged in spaced relation, and a cylindrical screen intermediate the members and spaced from the inner member.
