My invention relates to an improvement in millstone-stafl's, by which the bed-stone and runner may be readily staffed for being dressed; and the invention consists of a diametrical stali', with a central opening and adjusting device to fit the spindle of bed-stone or pin of runner, the stafi' being hung to a circular hoop, with slotted adjustable guidepieces or bearers at its circumference.

In. the drawing, A represents the staff, which extends diametrically across the stone, and is made of two pieces of wood, that are centrally connected by curved iron straps or hands B. providing space for the spindle. The staff A has near its open central part slotted adjustable top pieccsO, that slide along guide and clamp screws or, and fit, by their curved inner ends, to the spindle of the bedstone. One of these pieces 0 is provided with a perforation, a, near its inner end, into which a pin set centrally in a wooden block of the runner is placed, to allow the use of the staff with the same facility on the runner as on the bed-stone.

In using the staff on a runner-stone the slidepieces are brought together, so as to cause the perforation a to receive the pin temporarily applied to the runner as a center upon which the stafi turns.

The staff A is suspended from lugs b of a circular hoop, D, by means of screw-bolts d and nuts d, which allow the adjustment of the stafi' to the required height.

A suitable number of slotted vertical guidepieces or bearers, E, are arranged at diametrically-opposite points of hoop D, and adjusted by clamp-screws e to a level with the marking surface of the staff, or slightly below the same, according to the condition of the face of the burr.

The principal object of the adjustable pieces E is to maintain the stafi proper in a horizontal position by causing said pieces to run on the top surface of the stone.

When the staff is adjusted to the spindle and the surface of the burr, the same is revolved until the burr is sufficiently marked or painted.

Having thus described my in vcntion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The iron hoop provided with four adjustable surfacing-points, arranged as shown and. described, to support the traversing level when marking high places on surface of-bnrr.
