LIFTING JACK.
Application filed May 18, 1927. Serial No. 192,269.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved lifting jack which is strong and rigid in structure and at i the same time may be formed mainly of 5 stampings.
Second, to provide an improved lifting ack which may be compactly collapsed and is of considerable height when extended.
Third, to provide an improved lifting ack 10 which is easily operated.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 is a detail view mainly in vertical section on a line corresponding to line 11 of Figs-2 and 3.
Fig. 2 is a detail View mainly in horizontal section on line 22 of Figs. 1 and 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section 25 on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig.4 is a side elevation of the jack in extended position, parts being broken away to show structural details.
In the embodiment of my improvements an illustrated the standard and lifting member parts are formed mainly as metal stampings. The standard designated generally by the numeral 1 is made up of a pair of sections 2, 2 conformed to provide when assembled a :16 gear housing bottom portion 3 and an upright portion 4 of horizontal cross section. These sectionshavelapping flanges 5 at their edges secured together in the structure illustrated by spot welding as indicated at 6. The base m 7 which is'preferably a casting is secured to the horizontal flange 8 by rivets 9.
'At one side the housing portion is extended to form a bearing 10 for the shaft or journal 11 of the driving gear 12. The journal 11' m is provided with a socket 18 to receive the crank 14.
The gear 12 meshes with a beveled gear 15 on the lower end of the driving screw 16, this structure being rotatably supported by W the bearing ball 17 on the base plate. Upward movement is prevented by the engagement of the gear 15 with the'gear12. I provide an extensible lifting member consisting of the bottom section 18 and the top 4 I claim as new and section 19, both sections being tubular and of rectangular cross section. The lifting member section 18 is formed as a stamping,
'to guide and support the member 19 for telescoping movement.
The bottom section 18 is provided with a bottom piece 23 having threaded engagement with the screw 16. This bottom piece or nut member 23 is secured to the lower end of the section 18 and not only drives the same but serves as a support therefor.
Cables 24., which in the structure illus trated are in the form of chains, are secured to the brackets 22 at their inner ends and to the laterally projecting brackets 25 on the standard at their outer ends. Rollers 26 are mounted on the ears 20 of the lifting member section 18 so that as the section 18 is raised 1 by means of the rotation of. the screw the section 19 is projected from the section 18. Jacks embodying my improvements may be I compactly collapsed, are economical in structure and may, as stated, be practically formed from stampings.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various other modifications and adaptations which I contemplate as I believethe disclosure made will enable, those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what desire to secure byLetters Patent is:
1. In a lifting jacln'the combination of a hollow standard provided with a base plate and having a lower gearzhousing portion and an upper portion of rectangular cross section with laterally projecting brackets at the top thereof, a screw disposed vertically in said standard and provided with a gear enga lar rectangular top lifting member section telescoping'with said screw and having latorally propctmg brackets at 1ts lower end slidably engaging within sald bottom lifting member section, said bottom lifting member section having guides at its upper end for said top lifting member section, and cables connected to said brackets on said standard and top lifting member section, said bot tom lifting member section having rollers on its said ears over which the cables are passed. 2. In a lifting jack, the combination ofa hollow standard provided with a base plate and having laterally projecting-brackets at the top thereof, a screw disposed vertically in said standard and provided with a gear atits lower end, said screw being supported by a bearing on said base plate, a driving ear coacting with said gear on said screw, allellow bottom lifting member telescoping with said standard and having a driving member secured in its lower end and having threaded ement with said screw, said lifting member section havin laterally projecting cars at its upper end ribove said brackets on said standard, a top lifting member section telescoping with said screw and having lat orally projecting brackets at its lower end slidably engaging within said bottom lifting member section, said bottom lifting member section having guides at its upper end for said top lifting member section, and cables connected to said brackets on said standard and top lifting member section, said bottom lifting member section having rollers on its said ears over which the cables are passed.
3. In a lifting jack, the combination of a hollow standard provided with a base plate and having alower gear housing portion and an upper portion of rectangular cross section, a screw disposed vertically in said standard and provided with a gear at its lower end, saidscrew being supported by a bearing on said base plate, adriving gear coactlng withsald gear on sald screw, a hollow rectangular bottom lifting member slidable in said upper rectangular portion of said standard to telescope therein and having a drivin member secured in its lower end and having threaded engagement with said screw, a tubular top lifting member section telesco ingly associated with said screw and sai bottom lifting member section, and cables connected to said standard and top lifting member section, said bottom which the cables are passed.
4. In a lifting jack, the combination of a hollow standard provided witha base plate, a screw disposed vertically in said standard and provided with a gear at its lower end, said screw being supported by a bearing on said base plate, a driving gear coacting with said gear on said screw, a hollow bottom lifting member slidable in said standard to tele scope therein and havinga driving member secured in its lower end and having threaded engagement with said screw, a tubular top liftingmembersection telesco ingly assoon ated with said screw and sai bot-tom lifting member section, andcables connectedto said standard and top lifting member section, said bottom lifting member section having rollers over which the cables are passed."
5. In a liftin jack, the combination of a hollow standar a screw disposed vertically in said standard and provided with driv ing means at its lower end, a lifting'membe'r having threaded engagement with said Screw and telescopinglyassociated with said standard, a second lifting member telescoping with said first named lifting member, and oppoocd cables connected at their inner ends to said second lifting member and at'their outer ends to said standard, the first mentioned lifting member having rollers over which said cables are passed.
6. In a lifting jack, thecombination with-a standard, of a lifting member telescoping therein and comprising telescopingly associated sections, a screw with which the inner of said sections is telescopingl associated, the outer section having three engagement with said screw,and a cable connected to the inner lifting member andto said standard, the outer lifting member being provided with a thrust member over which Said cable is passed. s I r 7 In. a lifting jack, the combination with p a standard, a bottom liftingmember section telescoping with said standard, a top liftin member telescopingly associated with said bottom lifting member, a vertically disposed screw with which said bottom lifting member has threaded engagement, means for driving 1 said screw, acable connected to the lower end of said top liftingmen'iber section and to'said standard, and a member on said bottom lift ing' member section engaging said cable intermediate its connection to said top lifting member and standard. 1 V x 8.. In a lifting jack, the combinationof a standard, a pair of lifting members mounted in telesco in relation to each other and to said stan ar a screw rotatablj mounted in said standard and provided with driving means at its lower end, one of said lifting members having threaded engagement with said screw, and a cable connected to said standard and to the other of said liftingmembers, the lifting member connected to said screw engaging said cable between its ends.
9. In a lifting jack, the combination of a standard, a pair of lifting members including a fast moving member and a slow moving member, a flexible connection between the fast moving member and the standard, a part on the slow moving member adapted to engage a bight of the flexible connection, said flexible connection being free to pass over said part, and means engaging the lower end of the slow moving member to raise the same to cause the part thereon to engage the. bight of the flexible connection to raise the fast moving member.
10. In a lifting jack, the combination of a standard, a pair of lifting members including i I a fast moving member and a slow moving member, a flexible connection between the fast moving member and the standard, a part on the slow moving member adapted to engage a bight of the flexible connections, said flexible connection being free to pass over said part andbeing connected to thelower end of the fast moving member; and means engaging the lower end of the slow moving member to raise the same to cause the part thereon to engage the bight ofv the flexible connection to raise the fast moving member.
