UNITED STA JOHN C. MOON, OF ST. LOUI ES, MISSOURI.
' nusr coLLncron;
Application filed April 8,
is collected by a suitable apron and chute and the air discharged into the connecting to a blower whichcarries the dust from the wheels to a discharge point. This discharge point may be outside of the room or building in which the machinery is housed but this is .not always practical and it is frequently desirable to use a dust collector in which the dust may be removed from an air stream passing therethrough room.
In some respects, my invention is an improvement upon the collector described in my co'pending application Serial No. 88,815, filed February 17', 1926, and my present in vention has the same general object as my invention referred to above, namely, to provide a compactcollector which may be applied to the frame of'a shoe finishing machine and which may be connected at either end to the air chute, thereby accommodating different locationsof the blower on the finisher frame.
A further object of my invention is to better provide for the cleansing of the collector. lVhile my previous collector had a drain through which dirt collecting in the collector might be washed, nevertheless it was difiicult to get at the dirt receiving portion of the collector.
I have also found that the functioning of my collector may be improved by providing a larger outlet for the portion of the conduitwhich discharges into the dust receiving portion of the collector.
The construction of my present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 is a front elevation of a finishing machine such as is referred to above and having my dust collector applied thereto, the latter being sectioned vertically and longitudinally to more clearly illustrate its structure. I v
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
The finisher has the usual frame including uprights'l and horizontal elements 2, and mounts a drive shaft 3 which is connected to the various wheels 1, 5, etc, and is also connected by belt 6 to the shaft of a blower 7.- The blower has a chute pro- 1927. Serial No. 182,106.
rided with openings 9 and 10 through wijiich dust from the wheels l and '5 are drawn. into the chute and are delivered through a conduit 11 to the dust collector. All of the above structure forms no part of my present invention. a
The dust collector comprises a box-like member 12,'the front lower portion-13 of which forms a dust receiving water receptacle, and the rear portion of which provided with suitable baffles 14 and 1.5 by which the air stream must pass after it has. passed through the water in the lower portion of the receptacle. These baili have suitable flanges 16 for trapping drops of moisture carried by the air stream, and the air passes out of the collector through the opening 17 at the rear of the collector. The box may be mounted on theframe 'of the machine, preferably by suspending from the upper pipes 2, although this is immaterial.
So far as described, my present box resembles that described in my above-mmtioned application. The box 12, however, has inlets 18 projecting inwardly from opposite side or end walls, the inwardly extending portions of the inlets forming collars over one of which may he slipped the horizontal end of an elbow-like discharge member 19, the lower portion of which is flared downwardly and outwardly to provide discharge outlet of substantially larger cross section thanthe conduit whereby the air is more evenly distributed and is more likely to have its dust particles removed while passing through the water in receptacle 13. An ear 20 on member 19 adapts the same to be suspended by a hanger 21' from eitherone of suitable attaching elements 22 provided on the upper portion of the box.
The upper portion of the box has a large opening through which member 19 may be removed and this opening is provided with a closure 23 which may be easily. applied and removed. A handle 2 1 on member 19 facilitates its removal, and a pin 25 may be slipped throughthe horizontal portion of member 19 and the acent portion of inlet 18 tohold the parts assembled.
A cap or other closui'e element 26 is provided for theinlet 18 which is not connected to member 19. V i
It will be seen that the member 19 is removable through the opening in the top of the box and when so removed that the entire accessible.
dust receiving portion of the box is readily It is also obvious that member 19 may be attached to either inlet 18 and therefore any collector unit is adapted to accommodate any arrangement of the blower and its conduit.
A plug 27 is provided in the lowest portion of receptacle 18 and preferably the lower walls of the box are sloped as indicated so that all water will drain toward plug 27.
Obviously man of the details of my invention may be modified without departing from the spirit thereof, and I contemplate the exclusive use of such constructions as come within the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. In a' dust collector, a box having an opening in one of its walls, a closure for said opening, air inlets in the walls of said box, and adischarge member removable through said opening and adapted to be detacliably connected to either one 01 said inlets and to lead therefrom to the dust receiving lower portion of said box.
Q. In a dust collector, a box, the lower portion of which forms a water receptacle, said box having an opening above said receptacle, a closure for said opening, arinlet elements at opposite sides of the box above said receptacle, a member applicable to either of said inlets for leading air there from to said receptacle, said member being removable through said opening, and a closure applicable to the one oi? said inlets not connected to said member.
3. In a dust collector, a box having an opening in the upper portion thereof, air inlets in the sides of said box near the top thereof, a reversible elbow member removable through said opening and having one end adapted to fit either of said inlets and having its other endflaring outwardly and directed toward box, a hanger for said member, spaced hanger engaging elements on the upper portion of said box whereby said meinbermay be connected to either of said inlets and suspended from different points on the upper portion of said box, and a closure applicable to the inlet not connected to said member.
the lower portion of said 4. In a dust collector. a box-like body, the
lower portion of which forms a receptacle for water, a removable closure for. the upper portion of said body, a plurality of air inlets in the respective sides of said body and located above said receptacle, each ot said inlets including an inwardly :projecting'
