HAMMER HANDLE. Y
Application fired April 9,
This invention relates to a hammer handle and more especially to a means for reinforcing the handle Without utilizing rivets or similar fastening devices for holding the reinforcement to the wooden portion of the handle. I
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a reinforcing plate anchored within the wooden handle in a novel manner and having combined therewith simple and efficient means whereby the hammer head will .be held properly assembled with the handle.
A further object is to provide a handle which is not provided with rivets or other fastening devices tending to work loose and to split the handle while in use.
With theforegoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what isclaimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, the preferred form of the invention has been shown.-
In said drawings, I r
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of a hammer handle embodying the present improvements, the same Figure 2 is an elevation of a hammer having the present improvements combined therewith.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the reinforcing plate.
' Figure 4 is a perspective view ofone of the wedges.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a wooden handle of the ordinary contour, the same being provided with a longitudinal slit 2 extending thereinto from one end, the inner end wall of the slit being V-shaped as shown at 3 so as to provide an intermediate ridge 4 from which diverge the opposed portions 5 of the-end wall. The slit end of thehandle is adapted to be seated within the eye 6 of a hammer head 7 or the like. Seated snugly within the slit 2 is a reinforcing plate 8 of steel or other desired material so shaped that its side edges will be flush wth the corresponding surfaces of the handle 1. One end of this plate has an angu- 1926. Serial No. 100,962
lar recess 9 adapted to receive and straddle the end wall 3 of the slit and fit snugly thereagainst. Thus the recessed end of theplate is firmly anchored to the handle and held against displacement relative thereto. The otherend of the plate 8 is flush with the end of the handle and has one or more slits 10 extending thereinto dividing the end of the plate into tongues 11 and an intermediate portion 12. Wedges 13 of steel or other suit- 3 able metal are provided for holding the handle assembled with the head 7, the width of each wedge being substantially equal to the width of the eye in which the handle is seated.
In assembling the parts the plate 8 is forced into the slit so as to straddle and be anchored by the end wall 3. The handle, with the plate therein is then inserted into the eye 6 of the head 7 until the ends of the handle and plate are substantially flush with the outer surface of the head. Wedges 13 are then ar ranged transversely of the end of the handle as where rivets or similar fastening devices are extended transversely therethrough and through the inserted metal plate.
For the purpose of preventing moisture from working into the handle between'the wood and the inserted plate. and for the fur ther purpose of strenghtening the handle, the
plate is first roughened at 15, preferably by oxidation after which a suitable cement 16 is applied to each surface of the plate and the plate forced into position; The wooden handle is then clamped tothe plate until itadheres properly thereto. f
What is claimed is: The combination with a head having a flared eye, of awooden handle having a 1on gitudinal slit extending thereinto from one end. said end being seated in the eye, a rein forcing plate fitted snugly Within the slit, said plate having roughened faces, cooperate ing means at the inner'end of the slit and in one end of the plate for holding said end of the plate anchored against displacement within the slit, an adhesive on the roughened faces of the plate and the walls of the slit, there being spaced longitudinal slits in that .end of the plate seated in the eye, said slits being disposed adjacent the respective edges of the plate, and Wedges seated Within the respec- 5 tive slits extending transversely OfjhG PlfillQ and handle for holding one end portion of the handle and plate expanded into engageplate constitutin g means for reinforcing that portion of the handle outside of the eye and 10 adjacent the head.
n testimony. as my own, I hav that I claim the foregoing e hereto afl'ixed my signature.
WILLIAM V EDWARDS.
