Description

sept. 4, 192s. 1,683,336
'-r. P. cUMMlNGs PLUMBING `DEVICE Filed Oct. 22, 1927 Patented Sept. 4, 1928.
Unirse sra-res errar@ PLUMBING DEVCE.
Application filed October 22,1927'. Serial Noa.
My invention relates to plumbing devices and more particularly to a novel plug adapted to be used in testing pipes, drains, and similar plumbing structures.
The object of my invention is to provide a plug of the kind described that will be of simple and inexpensive construction, light in weight, andeliicient for the purpose intended.
Yther objects and advantages of the method and construction herein employed will appear more fully in the hereinafter specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an elevational view, partly in section of my device. y
Figure 2 is an elevational sectional view of my device in operative position within a pipe, showing a head of water sealed thereby.
Figure 3 is a plan view of my novel plug.V
lVith more particular reference to the drawings herein, similar characters of reference indicating corresponding parts inthe several views, ll designates a hollow, annular, rubber member having an air valve 12 to admit and eirpel'air from the interior 0f the plug. 13 is a spool having a passageway le to admit the bolt l5 having an integral disc head 16 and threads 17 to accommodate the nut 18,-the bolt also having a square end 19 with a view to holding the shaft of the bolt in fixed position while the nut isbeing adjusted. u which the stem of the air valve l2 is passed. Upon referring to Figure 2 the mode of operation of my device will be understood in connection with the following brief description:
ln the plumbing art it is frequently necessary to test and repair water pipes, drains, and similar plumbing adjuncts, with the water removed therefrom. After the repairs have been made, to test a pipe, such as A,
shown in. Figure 2., it will merely be .necessary to insert one of my novel plugs, of an appropriate size, with the annular' member partly inflated. By attaching the valve 1Q to an air pump of conventional pattern, air may now be introduced into the hollow annular member ll until the pressure is suflicient to protrude and impinge. the periphery thereof against the sides of the pipe A, thereby sealing the pipe water tight. The pipe may now be filled with water with a view to 2O is a disc having a hole 2l through" determining whether the repairs made are adequate. Hitherto, when making repairs, it has been necessary for the plumber or `his assistant to carry a metal plug, the average weight of which was seven orfeight pounds, making it a laborious task to carry around when'theV usual rounds of repair assignments were made. l ventien weighs about a pound, and is particularly adapted to effect a water-tight seal.
lt is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is susceptible of some change and modification;
The plug comprising my iny hence, l do not wish to limit myself to the i precise details of construction as set forth, but desir-cto avail myself of such variations and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of theappended claims. i
W hat l' claim as new vand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A plug of the kind described, comprising an annular inflatable member; a spool within said annular member, a pair of discs adapted to cooperate with said spool and inflatable member, means to clamp said discs to said spool, said means comprising a threaded member having a shank provided with a square end in order to prevent rotation of the threaded member-when adjustments thereto are desired, and means whereby said inflatable nicniberi'nay beexpanded.
2. A plug of the kind described, comprising an annui: r inflatable member; a pair of discs adapted to impinge against said inflatable member, clamping means engaging said' discs, and additional means integral with said clamping means to prevent 'rotation thereof when adjustments are desired, and means whereby said inflatable member may be expanded to press against the linterior walls-of a water pipe. i
A plug of the kind described, comprising a spool within an annular inflatable member, a .plurality of'men'ibers, means whereby said plurality of members are adapted to coact withsaid spool in restraining theA periphery of said. inflatable. member to expand against the interior walls of a pipe, and ladditional means integral vwith said first mentioned means to prevent rotation thereof when adji stinents are desired, whereby a plug is formed, adapted to seal said pipe.
