MATERIAL HOLDER.
Application filed March 9, 1927. Serial No. 173,854.
My invention relates to a material holder, and the object of my invention is a provide a material holder which is capable of securing a can of roofing cement and a box of roofing nails within the usual opening provided in a roll of roofing material, building paper or the like.
It has been customary heretofore to place the can of cement and box of nails loosely within the opening through the roll of roofing, in such a way that they would roll and tumble about and become broken, in which case the cement would be wasted and the nails would damage the roofing material.
It has been necessary when using the old method, to provide discs in the ends of the roll connected by a wire for preventing the materials from falling out of the opening,
but by the use of my invention it is unnecessary to employ end discs and the connect-ing wire, and the expense thereof is accordingly eliminated.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofthe material holder incorporating my invention and showing a can of cement secured therein.
Figure 2 is a partial plan view of a stamping of sheet metal from which the one portion of my invention is constructed.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a spring wire suitably shaped for use in my invention.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a modified form of spring adapted for a similar use.
Figure 5 is an elevational view of a roll of roofing partly in cross section and showing my invention also in cross section assembled therein.
In the drawing and for the purpose of illustration I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention in which numeral 5 represents a roll of rooting material partly broken away andpartly in cross section, and composed of a plurality of layers 6. The roll of roofing is provided inthe usual way with an opening 7 therethrough, in which is assembled myv invention 9, which is adapted to hold in position acan of cement 10 and a box of nails 11 interposed between the guard members 12. The members 12 and the bottom member 13 are made up from a stamping of sheet metal which is shown in Figure 2, lying flat before it is bent into the positionl shown'in Figure 1. This stamping is provided with suitably shaped apertures 14 which, when the side members 12 are positioned as shown in Figure 1, provide rounded corners for the members 12 and 13, adjacent the lower rim of the can of cement, thereby, eliminating sharp corners which might damagetheroofing material.
The member 18 positioned beneath the can 10 isriat as shown in Figures 2 and 5, and the side members 12 are curved so as to fit against the roofing material without presenting any sharp edges wherever said members happen to engage said roofing material. The shapeof members 12 also aid in holding can 10 in position. Ear members 15 or provided with openings 16 through which a relatively stift' spring wire 17 may be passed as bestishown m Figure 1. Said ears 15 are punched out of the side members 12 and are adapted to engage the upper rim of the can'of cement for aiding in holding the same in place. The upper end of said ears are adapted to engage the sides of said box of lnails 11 for holding it in place as shown in Figure 5.
The spring wire 17 is held in engagementv with the top of said can of cement by means of ears 15, and the upper end of members 12 constitute means for guarding or protecting the layers of roofing material 6 from being damaged by said spring 17. The upper end 18 of said side guarding members 12 is curved inwardly as shown in order that it may be drawn throughthe opening 7 without presenting any sharp corners or rough edges to the inner layers G and it, thereby, prevents damage to said roofing material.l
tis obvious that the side members 12 and consequently the entire assembly 9 is held in position by means of static friction on the inner side of the opening 7, and it is obvious that said rooting material may engage members 12 practically the whole length thereof, providing the opening 7 is of thel proper size to snugly fitv said v'members The spring member 17 is adapted to l yieldingly hold said side guarding members 12 against the roofing material and is adapted to automatically adjust said members to accommodate variations in the size of said opening.
On the upper extremity of spring member 17 is provided upwardly extending prongs v19` which may be engaged by any suitable means for compressing said members toward each other to aid 1n positioning the assembly 9 Within the opening 7. Provided near tliY upper end of said member 17 lare horizontal portions 20 which may be engaged by suit-able means for forcing said assembly 9 into the opening 7 and more particularly for withdrawing said assembly 9 fromthefopening 7 as will be readily apparent.
In Figure 4 is shown a modiic'ation 17 of the spring member 17, which is bent inwardly at a point 21 and again assumes a position parallel with the opening 7 above the point 22 so that it will not engage members 12 above 'the point 21, and as a. result this lengthen-ed spring member 17 may be used with the same side members 12 as that provided with the usual form of spring member 17. o
The member 17l is adapted to accommodate a much longer box of nails than is the member 17.
Vlhile 'I have described my invention in its preferred form itis apparent that many variations may be made' ,herein Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I do not, therefore, Wish tobe vlimited to the precise details of construction set forth, but Vdesire to avail myself of such variations and modifcations as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the classdescribed adapted to be inserted in an opening through a roll of roofing material, having means for holding a can of cement therein; additional means for individually holding a box of nails therein and meansfor frictionally engaging the walls of said opening and spring means for increasing and maintaining said frictional engagement.
A device of the class described comprising a metal stamping adapted to be inserted in an opening through a roll of roofing ma.- terial; said stamping having a lat'portion adapted to have a can of cement positioned thereon; said stamping having side members adapted to engage 'the Walls of said opening and spring means for yieldingly maintaining said members in engagement with said Walls.
