Description

Sept. 4, 1928. 1,683,100 A. ROZOWSKY V BOX Filed March 21, 1925 24 INVENTOR farms-D firm/m9 Patented Sept. 4, 1928 UNITED STATES ALFRED ROZOWSKY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOX.
Application filed March 21,1925.
This invention relates to folding boxes or cartons adapted to serve as containers for confectionery, toys, and the like articles.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved attractive box or carton of the character described, which may be sold to children as candy packages and which simulates in appearance an animal as for example a horse, said box being adapted to be used as a toy when the contents are removed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box or carton comprising few and simple parts, which are cheap to manufacture, easy to assemble, and highly practical and eflicient for the purposes disclosed.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in th features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the box or container embodying the invention may be made;
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are perspective views showing the steps of folding the blankin the formation of the box or carton; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 55 in Fig. 4.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a blank from which a box or carton embodying the invention may be made, said blank when folded and assembled presenting a simulation of an animal. Said blank may be cut or stamped from any desired sheet material and all parts thereof are preferably, although not essentially, made inte- The blank 10 comprises portions 11, 12, 13 and 14 adapted to be folded along lines 15, 16 and 17 as shown in Fig. 1, and adapted to form respectively one side wall, the front, the other side wall and the back of the box when the blank is folded. as hereinafter described. Bottom sections 18 and 19 may be formed integrally with sides 11 Serial No. 17,180.
and 12 respectively and are separated therefrom by cuts 20 and 21, respectively, and these latter sections being adapted for folding along lines 22 which form the lower edges of the said side walls. Curved sup porting members 23 formedto extend from the lower edge of said side wall 11 and corresponding supporting members 24 formed by the cuts 21 simulate the legs of the animal and function as supports for the box or carton when set up.
Securing tongues 25 may be provided at the edge of bottom section 19 to be folded along line 19 at the junction of the bottom and the tongues. A tab 26 is formed at the side edge 19 of bottom 19 and integral therewith and has spaced fold lines 26 extending parallel to said side edge.
A closure flap 28 constituting the box top is formed at the upper edge of said wall 11 and a tab 29 at the side edge 31 thereof, said flap being provided with a securing tongue 30. Fold lines 31, 32 and are provided at the lines of juncture of the'tab 29 and flap 28 with wall 11, and flap 28 with tongue 30 respectively, as shown in Fig. 1.
Tongues 33 and 33 formed by cuts 34 and 35 on the lower adjacent corners of side walls 11 and 13, respectively, are of such contour that, when folded away from said walls, they leave the remaining portions of said walls to simulate the lower portion of the head and neck of an animal.
The several fold line are preferably scored or otherwise impressed to render, the folding accurate and easy. In shaping the box or carton, the folding operation is as follows: The blank 10 is folded on lines 15, 16, 17 and 31, and the back wall 14 secured to the tab 29 by a suitable adhesive. Tab 27 is now folded inwardly, after which bot.- tom section 18 is folded into contact therewith, leaving supporting members 23 properly extending. Section 19 and its attached tab 26 are now folded so that section 19 c0ntacts with section 18, tongues being secured in slits formed by the cuts provided to shape members 23, and supporting members 24 permitted to extend in proper manner Tongues 33 and 33 are now folded inwardly into contact with each other, after which the tab 26, which has been successively folded in the manner shown in Fig. 2', is expanded i made of the above invention, and as various upwardly so that the fold thereof connected the box. The top closure flap 28 may then be folded and secured in place by tongue 30, said flap being givena proper length in order to produce a curved contour to conform with the shape of the front and back Walls 12 and Il, which, if desired, may be 'pressed slightly inwardly to provide a support for said closure fiap so that the complete box or carton will appear as shown in Fig. 4 with members 86 simulating the legs and functioning as supports therefor, the device as a whole having the appearance of an animal. 1
Such a device readily lends itself for display purposes and is not only pleasing to the eye, but alfords a combined toy and convenient receptacle for candy or other contents.
Itwill thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well. adapted to meet the condition of practical use. i i M As various possible embodiments might be changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth .or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, '1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A container composed of a. single in,- tegral blank comprising sides, back, front, bottom and top closure portions, tabs on the sides, top and bottom portions, said blank adapted to form a totally enclosed receptacle with an end of reduced section, a foldable flap extending from the bottom portion forming aside and bottom for said reduced end section and supporting members cut from the bottom, thecontour of the box and supporting members simulating an animal. i h
2. A container formed from a single blank, portions to form the side Walls of said container, having parts out out to provide a contour resembling features of: an obyect slmulated by said contalner, a hot tom wall for said container integral with: said side wallsyand a member integral with said 00 bottom wall to form a wall substantially followingthe contour ofrthe portion of the container bounded by said cut-out parts.
3.A container made 11 from a single integral blank, portions 0 said blank forming a bottom Wall for said container, parts out out from saidportions to provide membersto simulate supporting parts of an object simulated by said container and forming slits, said portions providing cooperative means to provide a closed bottom orsaid box, and tabs integral with one of said por tions receivable in said slits'to retain said portions in cooperative relation. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
