Description

JOHN A. THOMPSON, OF READINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT INCULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,296, dated September 2 1875; application l August 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN A. THoMPsoN, of Iteadington, in the county of Hunterdon and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inOorn- Cultivators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part vof this specification.
My invention relates to that class of corncultivators in which asled-frame is used; and
it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of laterally-adjustable side beams, connected to the frame by metal straps at their front ends, and in the construction and mode of adjusting the plows or shovels, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn-cultivator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part thereof.
A A represent the runners, with front and rear standards B B, connected by cross-bars O O. D is the draftrod, and E E are the handles, all constructed and arranged in the usual manner for this class of frames for cultivators. On each side of the frame are two beams, G G, the front ends of which are supported on top of the runner A, and connected, one on each side, to the front standard B by metal straps a a. These beams are held to the under side of a wing, H, projecting from the sideof the rear standard B by means of screws b passing through slots at d in the wing, whereby the beams may be adjusted laterally, to suit different widths of rows. The metal straps to at the front ends of the beams give or spring sufficiently to allow of all necessary adjustment, and are cheaper and more durable than hinges. '1 represents the plow-.or shovel, proa slotted metal plate, m, through which the plow-shank also passes, said plate being provided with parallel longitudinal flanges n 12. Through these flanges is passed a wooden pin, 2', immediately in front of the plow-shank h, whereby the plow is held from turning over.
In case the plow should meet a stone or other serious obstruction, the pin z will break and the plow turn on the pointed end of the v set-screw f as on a fulcrum, thus preventing any breakage of the parts.
I am aware that round plow-standards and break-pins are both in common use, and I do, therefore, not claim such as being my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the runner-frame A B 0, having the slotted wings H, of the adjustable plow-beams G G, provided with the spring-straps a a and the bolts b b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with a plow, I, having a round shank, h, the slotted beam G, slotted plate m, with parallel flanges n a, set-screw f, and break-pin i, all constructed substantially as and for thepurposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, 1875.
JOHN A. THOMPSON.
