Application filed September The invention relates to control mechanisms for interleaving duplicating machines, that is, duplicating machines pro-- vided with means for delivering printed sheets successively, means for holding a stack or collection of separators or blotters, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet to hold the printing thereon from contact with the next succeeding sheet. One object of the invention is to prevent the operation of the sheet delivery means on the exhaustion of separators to avoid the piling up of printed sheets without separators interposed between adjaeent sheets. Another ob- I ject of the invention is to prevent the opera.-
tion of the separator placing means when no sheet is in position to be fed into and delivered by the sheet delivery means. A further object of the invention is to provide an interleaving duplicating machine with means for preventing the operation of the interleaving devices to permit the machine to deliver printed sheets without the interposition of separators between them. Other objects incidental to the accomplishment of the foregoing objects will appear as the description of the invention proceeds. To these ends the invention consists in the novel mechanism hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended clalms.

For the purpose of illustrating the principle of the control mechanism of the present invention it is shown embodied in a duplicating machine of usual construction provided with interleaving devices cooperating with the sheet delivery means of the du licating machine to place a separator or b 0tter on each delivered sheet to separate it from the next succeeding sheet. The sheet delivery means of the duplicating machine as shown in the drawings comprises a cylinder 57 for holding the stencil or other printing means and an impression roller 56. The cylinder 57 is mounted on trunnions 3 in the upper part of the side walls 4 of the frame of the machine. Power may be applied to turn the cylinder to erform the printing operation by means 0 the handle 7 fixed on the outer end of a shaft 13 on which is mounted a gear 14 which meshes with the gear 19 connected with the cylinder. The relative sizes of the gears 14 and 19 aresuch that the cylinder makes one revolution while the handle 7 is rotated twice.
As the sheets to be printed are fed be,- tween the cylinder and impression roller they pass over a feed table 27 supported from the frame of the machine. The sheets may be fed into the machine by hand, or automatically. by the feed rolls 30 inthe manner which is usual in machines of this type. The means for cooperating with the feed rolls 30 to feed the sheets successively over the feed table 27 into the sheet delivery means are fully described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,054 399 of February 25, 1913, and may be briefly described as com rising the shaft 33 on which the feed ro ls', are mounted, driven from the gear 14 in timed relation with the other movements of the machine. A roll 34 carried by a yoke pivoted on the transverse rod 35 acts to hold the sheet of paper down against the feed rolls 30.
The pile or stack of sheet paper from which the feed rolls 30 successively remove the uppermost sheet is supported on a table 75 pivotally supported at itsrear end on the transverse stud 76. The free forward end of the table7 5 is raised, to present the topmost sheet to engagement by the feed rolls, and is then lowered again by means of the arm 77 mounted on the transverse shaft 47. The free end of the arm 77 has a sliding connection with the under side of the table 75 at the point 79 to permit relative movement between the two parts. The shaft 47 is oscillated to raise and lower the forward end of the table 75 by means shown in detail in Fig. 13 and consisting of the arm 80 carrying on' its free end the roll 81 held in engagement with the periphery of the cam 82 mounted on the cam shaft 83 Journaled on its opposite ends in'the machine frame. On the shaft 83 is mounted a gear 84 which receives its actuation from the gear 14 through the intermediate gears 85. Tlie cam roll 81 is held against the periphery of the cam .82 by means of a spring 86 fixed at one end to the machine frame and at the pgher end to an arm 87 secured to the shaft The forward edge of the pile or stack of sheets on the table bears against a verti- Cally arranged (plate 48 having at its upper edge a rearwar 1y extending lip 88 adapted to engage with the forward end of the topmost sheet. The plate 48 is mounted to reciprocate vertically on the vertically arranged support 89 secured to the machine frame. The plate 48 is arranged to-move upwardly with the forward end of the table 75 until the topmost sheet is in position to be engaged and detached by the feed rolls 30 and then the plate 48 continues its upward movement to permit the detachment of the uppermost sheet from the pile and its dehveryto the cylinder and impression roller.- -If theplate 48 is prevented from rising, as
by the exhaustion of separators as hereinafter described, the forward end of the plate 75 is prevented from rising and no sheet will be fed to the cylinder. The means for raising and lowering the plate 48 operate as usual in machines of this type and comprise a cam 90 mounted on the cam shaft 83 and engaging a roll 91 carried by the free end of an arm 92 fixed on a shaft 93 journaled at its ends in the machine frame. Also fixed on the shaft 93 are two arms 94 the rear free ends of which are pivotally connected with the lower end of the plate-48. The plate 48 is positively moved downward to bring the lip 88 thereof in engagement with the top of the pile of sheets by means of the cam 90 and is yieldingly raised by means of the torsion spring 95 encircling the shaft 93 and bearing at one end under one of the arms 94 and fixed at the other end to the machine frame.
The means for holding a stack or collection of separators and for detaching a single separator therefrom comprises a vertically arranged magazine 5 adapted to hold the separators and mechanism to remove a single separator. The magazine 5 is mounted on the frame 8 supported from the duplicating machine by the side pieces 11. The stack of separators rest on the bottom 2 of the magazine 5 and the lower end of the stack of separators is held in place by a catch or stop 6. The outermost separator is removed from the stack by means of a gripping member 10 arranged to move into and out of contact with the stack of separators to lift the outermost separator upward against a spring 9 and then free itself from the separator to permitthe spring 9 to force the separator downwardly onto the receptacle 12 where it will be in position to be pushed over onto the printed sheet which has 111st been delivered to separate it from the next delivered sheet. The gripping membcr 10 is mounted on the yoke15 movable by the arm 16 of a bell c'rank carried by a shaft 17 journaled in the frame 8. The yoke 15 s pivotally mounted on the arms 16 and 1s yieldingly connected therewith by the spring 108. The shaft. 17 is oscillated bya'connection 18 with acrank pin on a cam v26 mounted on the shaft 219 of the duplicating machine which receives its actuation through gearconnections with the cam shaft 83. It is thus seen that the gripping member 10 1s actuated to elevate and detach a separator from the stackat-the proper time with respect to the delivery 0 a sheet onto the receptacle 12.
After the gripping member 10 has raised the outermost separator against the spring 9 it is moved out of contact therewith to permit the separator to be pushed downwardly by the spring 9, and for this purpose the yoke 15 carries a roll 28'which contacts with the cam 29 fixed on the frame 8. When the upper end of the yoke 15 has been moved outwardly to free the gripping member 10 from the separatorit is held away from the disengages the pin 70 from the notch 71 (under the conditions hereinafter described) so that the gripping member may engage the next separator.
The means for placin r of a plunger carried by the free endof an arm 21 mounted on ashaft 22, the plunger being arranged so as to pass through an alined hole formed in the stack of sep arators. The shaft 22 is mounted on the frame 8 and is provided with a crank 23 connected by a spring pressed link 24 to the lower end of an arm 25 pivoted on the machine frame and provided with a roll 78 adapted to be. engaged by the periphery of the cam 26. The construction is such that as a sheet is delivered onto the receptacle 12 and a separator drops, the plunger 20 is actuated by the spring-pressed link 24 to push the fallen separator onto the delivered sheet, by' striking the separator above the hole therein. The plunger 20 is returned to inoperative position through the engagement of the roll 78 by the active part of the cam 26. An arm 32 spring pressed by the arm 31 pivoted on an arm mounted ,on the shaft 17 forces the lower end of the stack of separators against the stop 6 after a separator has been raised b the gripping member 10 to permit it to all outside the stop, and then as the gripping -m.ember moves into *position to engage the next separator,
the oscillation of shaft 17 causes the arm 31 to be freed from the arm 32, as shown in Fig. 6,'to permit the ready lifting of the gutermost separator by the gripping'memv The mechanism tostop the feeding and so the delivery of sheets when the supply of separators has been exhausted, comprisesa lug 36 mounted on the yoke 15 and adapted to ride free when the gripping member 10 encounters a separator on the inward and upward movement of the yoke 15, and to engage the lower end of a movable rod 37 mounted on the frame 8 when the gripping member 10 does not encounter a separators On the upper end of the vertically movable rod 37 rests the ,free end of an arm 38 of a bell crank fixed on the shaft 39 journaled in brackets on the frame 8. The other arm 40 of the bell crank is pivotally connected by a link 41 with one arm of a bell crank 42 fulcrumed on the frame 8 and connected the separator on the delivered sheet are shown as consisting 'andthe spring 46 which forces the notched upper end of the dog 44 under the shaft 47 W en on the exhaustion of separators the lug 36 en 'ages with the lowerend of the rod 37 and ralses the arm 38 until the end of the arm 40 to which the link 41 is connected is over deadcenter. The operation just described is clearly shown in Figs 6 and 7, and Figs. 9 and 10. While the notched end of the dog 44 is in engagement with the shaft 47 the plate 48 is prevented from rising and consequently no sheets can be fed by the rolls 30 to the cylinder. To replenish the receptacle 5 with separators the operator lifts the free end of the spring 9 which is mounted on ,a yoke 115 pivoted on the shaft 39. Within the yoke of the spring 9 is a second yoke 116 fixed on the shaft 39. The yokes 115 and 116 are provided with outwardly extendin handle parts. When the magazine 5 has een replenished with separators, the operator manually turns the yoke 116 thereby turning the shaft 39 and returning the arm 38 to normal position resting on top of "the upper end of the rod 37, and simultaneously therewith moving the spring 9 to normal position. The turning of the shaft 39 to bring the arm 38 into engagement with the rod 37 throws the arm 40 over dead center and thereby disengages the notched end ofthe dog 44 from the shaft 47. Which permits the plate 48 to rise.
While each sheet is on the feed table 27 and before it is fed to the sheet delivery means, that is, to the cylinder 57 and impression roller 56, a series of sheet feeling fingers 96 pass up through holes in the feed table 27 to determine whether a sheet ,ison the feed table. The sheet feeling fingers 96 are mounted on a transverse shaft 97 journaled spring 121 is free to turn the shaft 97 to bring the fingers 96 into position to perform their sheet'feeling function. If the fingers 96 encounter a sheet and are held thereby the impression roller 56 is permitted to press the sheet up against the cylinder 57. If, however, thefingers 96 do not encounter a sheet ,on the feed table they will pass upwardly through alined holes in the plate and as a result the impression roller 56 will be held away from-the cylinder 57 by the following elements A cradle 103 in the form of a yoke is pivotally mounted on a stud 102 fixed in the machine frame. Also pivotally. mounted on the stud 102 is an arm 101 yieldingly connectedwith the cradle 103 by the spring 104. On its free end the arm 101 carries the roll 100 adapted to be engaged by the cam 99 mounted on the shaft 83 to oscillate the arm 101 and cradle 103 in a counter-clockwise direction, viewing Fig. 15. One of the arms of the cradle 103 carries a pin 105 received in a slot in the lower end of an arm 106 fixed to a collar 107 loosely mounted on the shaft 97. One end of a" torsion spring 98 enters the collar 107 and the other end is received in a slot in a collar 118 fixed on the shaft 97. The torsion spring 98 functions to swing the cradle 103 (through the arm 106) in aclockwise direction when the flat part 109 of the cam 99 is opposite the roll 100 and a sheet of paper on the table 27 holds the fingers 96 depressed. If no sheet is on the table 27 permitting the spring 121 to oscillate the shaft 97 to move the fingers 96 up through rthe holes in the table 27 the lug or stop 122'carried by the arm 106 will engage with the lug 123 on the hub of the arm 120 and thus the spring 98 will be pre vented from turnin the cradle 103. When the cradle 103 is t us held the impression roller 56 is prevented from movin into engagement with the cylinder 57 as will appear hereinafter.
The mechanism to stop the operation of the separator placing devices when no sheet is on the feed table 27 in position to be fed between the cylinder 57 and impression roller 56 comprises the following :-Mounted on the cylinder of the duplicating machine are cams 49 and 50 arranged to coact with a roll 51 mounted on an arm 52 fixed on a shaft 53 extending transversely of the machine and carrying on its other end a lever 54. The arm 52 and the short arm of the lever 54 both rest upon the free ends of the lever arms 58 which carry the impression roller 56 and are fulcrumed on the machine frame at 59. Thus the engagement of the roll 51 by either the cam 49 or cam 50 depresses the impression roller 56 and oscillates the lever '54 to raise the rear flattened end 113 thereof to permit the platform 111 of the cradle 103 to swing thereunder when the sheet feeling fingers 96 encounter no sheet on the feed table 27 during their upward travel, as shown in Fig. 11. The impression roller 56 is yieldingly forced toward the'periphery of the cylinder 57 by means of the spring 114.
The cam 50 is so positioned relative to the timing of the movements of the shafts 97 and 83, that when the shaft 53 has been oscillated to raise the end 113 of the lever 54 and the cradle 103 has swung under the I latter purpose one of the arms 58 has fixed thereto a downwardly extending arm 60 (Fig. 1) pivotally connectedby the link 61 with the lower end of a lever 62 pivoted at 63 on theframe 8. Pivoted at 67 on an upward extension of the latch 65 is a pawl 66 provided with a manually operated screw 68 adapted to hold it in alternate positions on the latch 65. During the normal operation of the duplicating machine and of the interleaving devices the pawl 66 has the position shown in Fig. 5. In this position the lower end of the pawl 66 is adapted to engage the upper offset end of the lever 62 when a sheet on the feed table has been engaged by the feeling fingers, thereby permitting the impression roller 56 to move upwardly to force the sheet against the periphery of the cylinder. When no sheet 18 on the feed table, as a result of which the cradle 103 isheld in position to prevent the downward movement of the long arm of the lever 54 and thereby hold the lmpression roller away from the cylinder 57, the upper end of thelever 62 is held in the position shown in Fig. '1, so that the lower end of the pawl 66 does not encounter it on' the downward movement of the latch 65.
When sheets are fed successively over the feed table 27 to the sheet delivery means, so that after each depression of the impression roller 56 it rises again to force the sheet against the cylinder 57 thereby oscillating the arms 58 and 60 in a clockwise direction (viewing Fig. 1-) the lever 62 is swun into position to engage the pawl 66 on the ownward movement of the yoke 15 and of the pawl 66 therewith under the action of the s ring 64. When the pawl. 66 encounters t e upper end of the lever 62 the latch 65 is arrested and the continued downward movement of the yoke 15 frees the pin 70 from the notch 71 and permits the yoke 71 and the gripping member 10 is held fronr engagement with the separators until the yo e again reaches nearly the limit of means, and as a result thereof the impression roller 56 is held depressed and the lever 62 is held in the position shown in Fig. 1, the pawl 66 on the downward movement of the latch 65 with the yoke 15 passes by the upper end of the lever 62, and consequently the latch 65 under the action of the spring 64 holds the notch part 71 in engagement with the pin 70, thereby preventing the yoke 15 from swinging inwardly and bringing the gripping means 10 into engagement with the outermost separator. Hence no separator is detached from the stack of separators in the receptacle 5 and placed in the, receptacle 12 when 110 sheet is fed into and delivered by the sheet delivery means.

To prevent the plunger 20 from movement while no separator is to be delivered, the lower extension of the lever 62 is pivotally connected by a link 72 with a locking pawl 73 cooperating with a pawl lock 74 fastened on the shaft 22 carrying the arm 21 on which the plunger 20 is mounted, as shown in Fig. 1. The clockwise movement of the lever 62 imparted to it when the impression roller 56 is permitted to rise to press a sheet against the cylinder 57, pulls the link 72 to the left, viewing Fig. 1, and thereby disengages the pawl 73 from the notch 55 of the lock 74 -to permit the shaft 22 to be oscillated by the cam 26. A spring 112 holds the pawl 73 down on the lock 74.
Having thus described the invention what l claim as new is 1. A control mechanism for duplicating machines provided with means for delivering sheets successively, means for determining whether a sheet is in -position to be fed to the sheet delivery means, means for holding a collection of separators, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet, comprising, means operative upon the exhaustion of separators for preventing the operation of the sheet delivery means, and
means for preventing the operation of the separator placing means when no sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means.
2. A control mechanism for duplicating machines provided with means for deliverin sheets successively, means for holding a co lection of separators, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet, comprising, means operative upon the exhaustion of separators to prevent the operation of the sheet delivery means.
3. A control mechanism for duplicating 7 machines provided with means for delivering sheets successively, means for determining whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means, and means for placing aseparator on each delivered sheet, comprising, means for reventing the operation of the separator p acing means when no sheet is inposition to be fed to the sheet delivery means.
4. A control mechanism for duplicating machines provided with means for delivering sheets successively, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet, comprising, means for preventing the operation of the separator placin means to permit the delivery of sheets without the placing of separators on the delivered sheets.
5. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determining whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the delivery means, means for holding a collection of separators, and means for placing a separatoron each delivered sheet including gripping means for engaging the outermost separator, means controlled by the sheet feeling means for preventing the gripping means from engaging the outermost separator when no sheet is in position to be ,fed to the delivery means.
6. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determining'whether a sheet is in position" to be fed to the delivery means,
means for holding a collection of separators and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet, means controlled by the sheet feeling means for preventing the operation of the separator placing means when no sheet is in position to be fed to the delive means.
7. n a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determinlng whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the delivery means,
no sheet is in position to be fed to the delivery means for holding the separator gripping means out of contact with the separators.
8. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determining whether a sheet I is in position to be fed to the delivery means,
.and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet including a rock shaft and a plunger arm mounted on the rock shaft for positively pushing a separator onto a delivered sheet, means controlled by the sheet feeling means when no sheet is 1n position to be fed to the delivery means for preventing the rock shaft from oscillation.
9. In a duplicating machine having means fordelivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determining whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means, means for holding a stack of separators, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet including a separator gripping means mounted to move into and out of contact with the outermost separator,
means controlled by the sheet feeling means when no sheet .is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means for preventing the operation of the separator gripping means, comprising, a lever, a cradle moved by the sheet feeling means to look the lever, a second lever, connections between the two levers, a latch for holding the gri ping means from the separators, and a paw connected with the latch and normally engagmg the second lever on the movement of the separator gripping means to release the latch from the gripping means, said pawl being held .from contact with the second lever when the first lever is locked by the sheet feeling means.
10. ln a dulplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feelingmeans for determining whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery'means, means for holding a stack of separators, and means for placinga separator on each. delivered sheet including a separator gripping means mounted to move into and out of contact with the'outermost separator and an oscillatory plunger for pushing a separator onto a delivered sheet, means controlled by the sheet feeling means when no sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means for preventing the operation of the separator gripping means and'of the plunger, comprising, a lever, a
' cradle movedv by the sheet feeling means to lock the lever, a second lever, connections between the two levers, a latch for holding the gripping means'from the separators, a. pawl connected with the latch and normally engaging the second lever on the movement of the separator gripping means to, release the latch from the gripping means, said pawl being held from contact with the second lever when the first lever is locked by i the sheetfeeling means, and a latch pawl operated by the second lever for holding the plunger from operation.
11. In a. duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, sheet feeling means for determining whether a sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means, means for holding a collection of separators, means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet including a yoke carrying'a separator gripping means and mounted to move upwardly into contact with the outermost separator and downwardly out of contact therewith, a pin on the yoke, a latch spring-pressed into engagement with the pm as the yoke rises, a. recess in the yoke for receiving the pin, means for forcing the yoke outward to per mit the pin to enter-the recess and a awl mounted on the latch, means controlle by the sheet feeling means for permitting the pin to remain in the'recess of the latch when no sheet is in position to be fed to the sheet delivery means and for detaching the in no sheet is in position to be fed to the delivery means.
12. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, means for holding a stack of separators, and means for placing aseparator on each-delivered sheet including an arm movable toward and from the stack of separators and gripping means mounted on the arm for contacting with the outermost separator, a movable member normally stationary, a lock arranged to hold the sheet delivery means inoperative, means for operating the lock arranged to be actuated by the movable member, and means mounted on the arm of the separator placing means for actuating the movable member when the gripping means on the inward movement of thearm moves to a position permitted by the .exhaustion of separators.
13. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, means for holding a stack of separators, and
means for placing a separator on each do the latch into engagement with the stop to prevent the action of the sheet delivery means, and means connected with the separator placing means for actuating the mov-' able member on. the exhaustion of separators.
14. In a duplicating machine having means 'for delivering sheets successively including a vertically movable member, means for holding a stack of separators, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet, a stop, a latch connected with the vertically movable member, a movable rod normally stationary, means arranged to be actuated by the rod to move the latch into engagement with the stop to hold the member from moving and thereby prevent the operation of the sheet delivery means,
and means connected with the separator placing means for actuating the rod on-the exhaustion of separators.
15. In a duplicating machine having means for delivering sheets successively, means for holding a stack of separators and means for placing a se arator on each delivered sheet,-.a stop, a atch connected with the sheet delivery means and adapted to engage with the stop to prevent the operation of the sheet delivery means, andmeans operated by the, separator placing means on the exhaustion of separators for moving the latch into engagement with the stop.
16. In a duplicating machine having sheet delivery means, means for holding a collection of separators, and means for placing a separator on each delivered sheet includlng a gripping member, an arm for supporting the gripping member and means for moving the arm upwardly toward and downwardly from the separators, a stop, a latch connected with the sheet delivery means adapted to engage with the stop to prevent the operation of the sheet delivery means, a movable, vertically arranged rod, a bell crank having an arm resting on the upper end of the rod, connections between the bell crank and the latch, and means carried by the arm arranged to lift the rod on the exhaustion of separators to movethe latch into engagement with the stop.
