lMPR OVEMENT IN CQVERS FOR THE UPPER CHORDS OF BRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [68,260, dated September 28, 1875; application filed October 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ LASSIG, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Roofs or Coverings for the Upper Chords of Bridges, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object to provide the upper chords of wooden and combination bridges with a light and inexpensive roofing or covering, which will exclude the elements, and thus prevent their action upon the wood and metal, the former of which is liable to decay, and the latter to corrosion, if not protected. p
The material used for this purpose is corrugated sheet-iron, applied in the manner more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a top chord partially roofed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section at :20 m in Fig. 1.-
In the drawing, A A A represent the timbers composing the upper chord of a bridge. B is a covering of sheet-iron, arched and transversely corrugated. On the top of each outer timber, at the outer edge thereof, there is nailed a strip, a, corrugated on its upper edge to fit the under side of the covering B, which is fastened thereto by nails or screws. To
the s ide of the strip a and the outer member What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a bridge, the combination, with the top chord A, of a corrugated sheet-metal covering, B, projecting on each side 0t said chord, arched and secured at an elevation above the timberscomposing said chord, so as to leave a free open space between said covering and chord, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a bridge, the combination, with. the top chord A, of the corrugated arched covering B and the strips a a, all constructed and arranged substantially as described, and
shown.
