In many new communities where drainage for ground water has not been at all or adequately provided for the water recurrently accumulates in the basements or cellars of the dwellings and sometimes to such an extent, especially during thevwinter or cool months, as to extinguish the furnaces. `To bail or pump out such water by hand 1s a la-l bol-ions and disagreeable job. The object` ot lo the present invention is to provide an l1mproved pump of simple and Veconomical construction for automatically removing such water as fast as it 'accumulates and beforeit reaches a level where it can work any harm'.
5 The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.

In the views 5 designates a stout slab, economically of natural wood, on which the operating parts are mounted. 6 designates a suitable electric motor bolted to the upper end ofthe board, the shaft 7 of such motor normally standing parallel to the face `of the board. In the present instance the shaft 7 of the motor is provided with a shoulder 7 resting on the upper movable ring 32 of a ball retaining member, the lower ring or race 33 of said retaining member resting upon and supported by the projecting perforated collar 6'l of the motor cap and a bushing 6b in said collar. At the lower end of the board is mounted the ump casing 8, it having an arm 9 pivoted y means of a single bolt 10 to a block 11 that in turn is pivoted to the board by a single bolt 12. The axes of the bolts 10 and 12 lie in planes at right angles to each other so that the pum casing can have a universal movement wit respect to the board. 13 designates the ump impeller suitably journaled in the caslng, the shaft 14 of said impeller extending upward through the top of the casing in line generally with the shaft of the motor 6. The shaft 14 of the pump im M'. ller is coupled to the shaft 7 of the motor y means of tube 15 of rubber clamped around having screw bolts and nuts as at 18 for adjusting the pressure of the straps so as to establish sufficient Vfriction to turn the impeller shaft in normal circumstances but to permit 4the turning of the motor shaft if any obstructing means, for example7 a stickof Wood inthe 'ca-sing, should preventthe impeller shaft'from turning. This slipping coupling prevents the burning of the motor coil or coils if energized and not doing work. A slug 19 of insulating material is inserted between adjacent ends of the two shafts.
The lower end ci the impeller casing has secured to it a suitable screen 20 forming a part ofthe impeller chamber, said screen designed to prevent the access of obstructions to the impeller chamber. The pump casing is provided with an outlet 21 to which flexibly attached a conductor 22 for leading the pumped water to the exterior of the cellar or basement.
23 designates a float having an arm 24 pivoted at 25 in a bracket 26 attached to the edge of the board near the lower portion ot' the latter; and extending upward from any one of several hole-S 27 in a fin on the arm 24 is a rod 28 connected with an arm 29 arranged to actuate an electric circuit maker and breaker 30, in a suitable box secured in the board near the motor, said switch beingof an ordinary snap variety, and adapted, when the float is raised by rising water, to close the operating circuit through the cable 31 of the electric motor.
Inthe floor of the cellar or basement where the trouble referred to exists there is dug a shallow well or sump to which thev water from all parts of the floor can flow, such well being of ample dimensions horizontally and vertically to receive the lower end of the board, the pump casing and float.
The apparatus described is placed vertically in such well or sump with the pump and float in position to be submerged in the down position of the float when the water rises in the well hence the switch of the motor will be actuated to energize the motor when the float is liftedby the rising water. Such rising water also primes the pump, and the closing of the lswitch starts the operation of the pump impeller thereby eventually reducing the level ofthe water to a point where it does not flood'the floor. When the water is thus lowered the float falls thereby stopping the motor. The operation is entirely automatic and loo llo
self repeating as often as is necessary to prevent overflow. i e 4 Because of the alternate wetness and dryness of the whole or a` part of the board 5 there is some likelihood of its warping and twisting it will therefore be observed that a feature of especial advantage of our construction is that any such warping of the board is compensated for by reason of the pump case mounting and shaft connection thereby at all times insuring free and proper operation of the impeller notwithstanding such warpin". A further important feature of the construction is that because the lweight of the shaft 14; is suspended or sustained by t-he ball bearings at the top, pressure of such shaft is relieved at, the casing thereby permitting free operation of the shaft at its ilnpeller end and avoiding the necessity vfor lubrication at that end.
The forms of the parts can be changed .without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What we claim is:
l.V A cellar or basement pump including a board, an electric motor and a pump driven thereby on said board, said pump having a supporting connection with said board independently of the motor, said connection permitting a. universal movement thereof in reneeasoz spect tothe board, a slipping clutch between the motor shaft and pump impeller shaft, an electric switch for said motor and a float adapted to actuate the motor switch to cause the operation 0f the pump'when the pump is primed.

A 'cellar or basement pump including a board, an electric motor and a pump driven thereby on said board, said pump ha vingasupporting connection with said board independentlyT of the motorrsaid connection permit ting a universal movement thereof in respect to the board, an electric switch for said mo`- tor and a float adapted to actnate the motor switch to cause the operation of the pump when the pump is primed. 5
3f A cellar or basement pump including a support, an electric motor secured onsaid support having a vertically arran ed shaft, a pump having universally adj ustzble means connecting it with said support, a shaft for said pump having a slipping couplingwith said motor, shaft, and an antifriction bearing supporting said motor shaft whereby said pump shaft is in suspended relation to said motor shaft.
