T is in ent on ates .to ga age cans and isrnore particularly directed to a sanitary cover therefor. The object of the invention is to provide a cover adapted to contain a disinfecltant and deodorant, the fumes of which will serve to be rendered non-toxic, while the can is kept sanitary andifree from objectionable odors f w In carryin put the inventi'onfthe'cover ll) of the canmay be made in the usual conventional form, while on the interior or under side of the cover is secured a metallic plate of substantially circular configuration and pressed or otherwise manipulated into a substantially W-shaped cross section. The center of the plate is secured at the center of the cover, while the margins of the plate bear against the under side of the cover at a point near its periphery, thereby forming an annular channel in which is positioned suitable absorbent material. WVhen the cover is inverted, the re-entrant portion or basin is found into which basin liquid disinfectant may be introduced and is adapted to flow into and permeate the absorbent material through apertures formed in the plate. Additional perforations are preferably provided through which the fumes of such disinfectant can exist for the purpose of circulating throughout the can with which the cover is associated.
The structure of the present invention is unusually sim 1e and economical to manufacture and is ound, in practice, to give highly satisfactor results.
Features 0 the invention, other than those specified, will be apparent from the hereinafter detailed description and claim, when read I in conjunction with the accompanying draw- The accompanying drawings illustrate one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction therein shown is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 is a central section perspective of a can cover embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is an underneath plan view of said cover; and,
Figure 3 is a central section of the cover showing the same inverted.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a cover, such as is commonly used for garbage cans and the like, the same being struck up from sheet metal and provided with a suitable handle 2. In associating the present inventionwith acover of this characterfI form a circular Sh e me al b ank by i i' ans I a d e or otherwise into'a substantially lN-shapetl cross section: That is to say the central port onfi of' the blankis formed :into substantially conical cross section, while the outer peripher of the conical portion is formed with an "integral upstandingflange 4', the nee edge of which maybe rolled as shown at 5 if desired. The center of the blank is punched or perforated and the center of the cover 1 is also perforated so that a rivet 6 may be passed through these perforations and headed over for the purpose of securing the plate in the position shown in Figure 1. The parts are preferably so formed that when the rivet is applied, the plate will be placed under slight tension which will firmly hold the rolled edge 5 of the flange tightly against the under face of the cover. During the forming operation on the blank, the same is preferably provided witlrfilling openings 7, which are preferably positioned near the apexof the cone shaped portion of the plate, while additional apertures 8, preferably of smaller dimension are arranged about the plate as shown.
When the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 1, it will be apparent that an annular enclosure 9 is formed between the plate and the under side of the cover and in this enclosure is positioned suitable absorbent mateadapted to contain garbage or other material without'giving off objectionable, unsanitary or toxic odors since the disinfectant or deodorant contained in the absorbent material will completely permeate the confines of the can and in so doing render the can thoroughly sanitary.
It is to be noted that the structure of my present invention is very simple and economi cal to manufacture. The blank for forming ios the annular casing may be stamped up in one operation and secured in place by a single rivet. Moreover, I may install this arrangement on any conventional lid and a special lid or cover for the receptacle is not required. 7
sembled construction, the cover is, in effect,
ixnperforate; that is to say, it has no? openings or holes through which-odors or disinfectant can escape to the outer atmosphere.
, The drawings show the invention in its preferred "practical form, but the invention is to be understood as fully commensurate with the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An imperforate cover for garbage cans and other containers provided on its under side with a perforated casing, means for securing the center of the casing to the center of the cover with the center of the casing in face abutting relation to the center of the cover to form with the cover an annular chamber, said casing being under sufiicient tension to maintain the periphery of the casing in engagement with the under side of the cover, and absorbent means positioned in such chamber for the purpose of retaining a disinfectant.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
