Description

UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
B. T. BABBITT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENEMA-GIVING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 16,822, dated March 17, 1857.
To all wiz-om t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. BAB- Brr'r, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Giving Enemas or Injections, which I denominate the Fountain- Injector, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of the apparatus showing the reservoir in section. Fig. 2, is a back view of the reservoir.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This apparatus consists of a portable reservoir to contain the water lor other liquid to be used for the enema or injection, with a flexible tube connected at or near its bottom terminating in a suitable nozzle for the purpose of giving enemas or injections by means of the hydrostatic pressure of the water or liquid employed, by suspending or placing the reservoir at a suitable elevation according to the pressure or force required.
An apparatus of this kind is far superior to the common syringe inasmuch as it enables the force with which the liquid is injected to be more perfectly controlled, and it can be manufactured at a less price.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its con struction and operation.
A, is the portable reservoir which neednot be of greater capacity than to contain suflicient liquid for one operation, having a hole a, near its top by which to suspend it from a nail or hook driven in or secured against a wall or other place at a suitable elevation and having a nozzle Z9, near the bottom to which to attach the liexible tube c, is the flexible tube; and d, is the nozzle to be inserted in the body.
To give the injection, the reservoir is lilled and hung up or else placed upon a shelf or other resting place at a suitable elevation and the flexible tube compressed between the thumb and finger of one hand to close it until the nozzle (l, is introduced into the body, and after the introduction of the nozzle the compression of the thumb and linger is relaxed, to allow the liquid to be injected into the body by its hydrostatic pressure.
By making the flexible tube of india-rubber, which is the cheapest material for the purpose, it may, when the apparatus is not required for use, be slipped olf the nozzle b, and the tube and nozzle d, be packed within the reservoir A, and the whole apparatus then occupies less room than a syringe of the same capacity. n
I do not claim, in the abstract, the employment of hydrostatic pressure to give injections, but
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the portable reservoir A, the flexible tube c, and the nozzle d, substantially as described, to form a portable apparatus for the purpose of giving enemas or injections by hydrostatic pressure.
