UNITED STATES PATENT erica. t
ALWIN e. STEINMAYER, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, AssICNOR To LINE. MATERIAL COMPANY, OF SOUTH MILWAUKEE, WIsCoNsIN, A CORPORATION on WISCONSIN.
INSIILAI'OR.
Application filed August 29, 1924. Serial No. 734,894.
This invention relates to certain new and useful. improvements in insulators of that type especially designed for mounting dead ends, although it may be used in numerous other places.
Heretofore, insulators of the type described have had a spool mounted in a carrying bracket which in turn is secured to a support by means of a suitable attaching device, such as a hookvor the like. In installing devices of this type, `it has been found that the man on the ground'has been somewhat hindered in wrapping.` the wire around the spool due to the encumbrances offered by the spool mounting.
IVith the above and other objectionable features of the insulators of the type described in mind, this invention has as one of its objects the provision of an insulator wherein one of the links forming the spool mounting bracket may be disconnected to free one end of the spool to facilitate the wrapping of the wire therearound.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of an insulator of the character described having a spool rotatably mounted on a pin on the ends of which a pair of links are pivotally connected to provide means for supporting the spool from a suitable attaching hook, one of the links being readily removable to permit the convenient wrapping of a wire about the spool.
It is a still further object of this invention 'to provide an appliance of the character described which is of simple and durable construction and which will materially facilitate `line work requiring an appliance of this character.
lVith the above and other objects in `view which will appear as the description proceeds7 my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be mad-e as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated one complete` example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according' to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
the attaching hook, one-ofthe links beingv disconnected from the spool vcarrying boltv or pin, and i ligure 3 is a view, partly in section and partly in elevation, taken through Figure 1 on the plane of the line 8 3.
Referring now vmore particularly tothe accompanyingdrawing, in which like num-,
crals designate like part-s throughoutYither several views; the numeral 5 designates an attaching member having, in the present embodiment, a threaded end 6 provided with a flange or head 7 from the other side of which a pig-tail hook 8 projects. The flange or head 7 is preferably providedv with' apertures or notches' 9 through which a nail or screw (not shown) may be passed, after the threaded end has been screwed home with the flange orhead 7 engaging the support, `to prevent the accidental unscrewing thereof. lVhile the attaching member has been illustrated of the screw type, it will be appreciated that it may be in the forni of a bracket or any other construction.
The spool orinsulator proper 10 is preferably of cylindrical shape having one or more annular grooves or channels 11 in its periphery to facilitate the connection therewith of a Wire 12'and having a central bore 13 through which the mounting bolt or pin 14 passes. The bolt or pin 14 has a head 15 on one end and is passed through thebore 13 and through the outer ends of a pair of links 16 and 17. The inner ends of the links are bent inwardly and then laterally to form a yoke shaped frame adapted to be supported from the attaching member by passing the pig-tail hook through apertures 18 in the inner ends thereof.
The opening 19 of the link 16, through which the Abolt or pin 14 passes, is of substantially key-hole shape, having its inner end 2O enlarged to a size sufliciently to permit the head 15 to be 'passed therethrough and the opening 21 in the link 17 through which the pin or bolt passes is of a diameter to receive the bolt and is held thereon by a member 23 passed through the pin.
'mounted by inserting the hook 8 in the apertures 18, thus materially facilitating the running of the wire and producing an economy in labor.
It Will'be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention lof the character described appertains, that in addition tothe economy in labor, I provide an appliance which is of extremely durable construction and capable ot being produced at a low cost.
What I claim as my invention is:v
An appliance of the character described,
comprising an attaching member, a hook end thereon, a pair of links having registering apertures 1n their inner ends adapted to be engaged over the attaching member Lhook end, the outer ends of the links being struck outwardly and then parallel to provide a yoke frame, an insulating spool adapted to be secured between the opposite ends of the links to receive a strain in a direction away from the attaching member, the outer ends or" said linkshaving apertures therein, a securing pin passed through the apertures of the links andk through the spool, a head on one end of said pin preventing its movement through the spool in one direction, and means securing the other end of the pin to one link to prevent longitudinal movement of the spool from the link, the aperture of the other link being provided with a keyhole slot having its narrow portion disposed toward the line of strain on the spool to prevent detachmentof the spool from between the links while a strain is applied, the link having the keyhole slot being readily detachable fromy the pin upon its disengagement from the attaching member and its movement in a longitudinal plane in the line of strain In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
