l `1,681,006 "UNITED, STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
i PERCY METON, F PARK RIDGE, NEW JERSEY.
ARTICLE or HEADWEAR.
Application led December 4, 1926.V Serial No.'152,613.
My invention relates to an article of headwear,and it more particularly and in practice is especially embodied in beret caps.
The general object of m invention is to provide an article of hea wear of the indicated character improved more particularly with respect to embodying an outer band forming in a novel way a finish for the crown at its edge, and at the same time providing a size band, the assemblage making for comfort and lending an attractive appearance to the article when worn.
The nature yof my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication, it being understood that the drawings `are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a beret cap embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of said cap;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail in crosssection on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a fragment of the cap showing the manner of assembling the outer band and the inner band and a size band, in sewing the parts to each other and to the crown.
Figure 5 is a detail in vvertical section of the visor, as indicated bythe line 5-5 of Figure 2. Y
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, which shows a beret cap, a suitable crown is provided indicated by the numeral' 10. The
' numeral 11 indicates the visor of the cap'.
I form, in accordance Vwith my invention a size band 12, said band 12 being formed in practice of a bias strip which 'is bent into U-shape in cross-section.
The edge of the crown indicated at 14, as well as the inner vedge portions 16 of the covering of the material of the visor 11 and also edge portionsv l5 of an outer band 17 are covered by the size` band 12 as a binding, said edge portions 14, 15 and 16 being inserted in said U-shaped size band.
My invention resides in the assemblage comprising the size band v12 and thenovel outer band 17 combined with the edge portions 14 and 15, with the edge portions 16 when a visor is employed. The outer band 17 gives a finish to the article of headwear `while the size band 12, arranged as described, contributesmaterially to preserving the shape of the article of headwear and materially promotes comfort to the wearer.
The outer band 17 is composed of a length of bias material doubled on itself so that when the two edges are inserted within the size band 12 as a binding, said outer band 17 is of tubular or tunnel form. The combined edges of the size band 12 and the interposed edge portions 14, 15 of the crown 10, the edges 16 ofthe visor 11 and outer band 17 are united by a row or rows of stitching 18 completing the article. The numeral 19 indicates the stiffener of visor 11. -The outer band 17 forms an outer ornamental edging at the bottom of the crown and with the size band arranged as shown the cap is given a very desirable finished appearance.
The bias material of the size band 12 and outer band 17 is capable of yielding, so that the cap readily conforms itself to heads of varying size within given limits, and yet the material tends to restore itself to its original size, so that the cap-is always held Vsnugly in position. y
I would add that the outer band 17 constitutes a wind-break at the under side of the cap, and this is particularly true of the portion of said band adjacent the visor 11.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself -strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.` f
What I claim is: n V1.An article of headwear including a crown, an outer band forming a strip doubled on itself to present a tubular formation, and a band U-shaped in cross-section, the said outer band being disposed at the under side of the edge portion of the crown and said band constituting a binding for said edges of the crown and outer band, the edges of the crown and tubular strip being horizontal, and said U-shaped band constituting a head-contacting size band.
2. An article of headwear including a crown, an ornamental outer band beneath,V
the crown vat the edge portion and of tubular formation, a band U-shaped in cross-section embracing the said edge portions of theV crown and outer band, and stitching holdcrown and an outer ornamental band formed with a strip doubled on itself und disposed beneath the crown together with :L visor on said article, said band forming a bindingA for the edge portions of said crown, seid outer band and said visor, the edges of the crown und tubular strip being horizontal, und Suid U-slmped band constituting :i head-contacting size bund.
