SLICER.
Application mea February 24, 1927. seriai No. 170,571.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide a device Within which an edible con'imodity may be placed and manually sliced as desired, the device beingv adapted for ready movement from place to place, thus permitting the contained article to be placed in and removed from a storage compartment without the necessity for its: individual handling; to provide a construction wherein the article may be fed to the slicing means as desired and the thickness of the slice definitely and easily determinedA by the operator; and to` provide a construction which, aside from its high sanitar property, is susceptible of cheap manu acture and therefore of low `marketing cost.
Writh tliis object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
ll`igure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention.
Figure 2 is also a side elevational view but looking at the opposite side from that shown in Figure 1. i n
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 1. i
Figure 4 is a top plan View.
The casing 10 in which is contained the article to be dispensed by slicing is open at its remote ends but closed at the top, bottom and on its two sides. The casing comprises two sections of which the side 11 is movable toward the other or stationary side, the latter being part of a single plate 12 bent as indicated at its opposite edges to provide the bottom wall 14 and top Wall 15 from each of which extends a flange 16. The movable plate 11 is disposed behind the twolanges 16 and is yieldingly impelled toward the side plate 12 by means of a looped spring 17 coiled as indicated at 18, the coils being disposed in surrounding relation to the bar 19 secured in ears 20, the latter lying in the same plane as the bottom and top walls 14 and 15 and being struck from the flanges 16. The free .ends of the spring 17 are anchored in the flanges as indicated at 21 and the looped portion of the spring engages in the throat of afflat hook member 22 secured to the plate 11. The casing 10 is supported on the base castings 23 and 24 disposed at the remote ends, a bar 25 being riveted or otherwise secured to the casting 23 and spanning the two flanges 16 at one end, being riveted or otherwise secured to the flanges 'and extending across the top 15 to which it is likewise secured. A similar bar 26 is secured to and carried by the base casting 24, spanning the flanges 16 at the remote end and being secured to the latter, this bar 26 extending above the top 15 and having its upper end cut at an angle as indicated at 27.
The plate 11 is pivotally mounted on the base casting 23 by means of a screw or other device as indicated at 28, the screw provida detachable pivotal connection and permitting the removal of the plate when necessary for cleaning the device.
On the side of the wall 12 and at the opposite ends ci the casing are mounted the knit'e guide 29 and the kfollower idler roll 30, the former consisting ot spaced metal strips 29 and 291 of which the latter is an integral part of the plate 12 bent outwardly at right angles from the plate and then bent back on itself, the former consisting of a n bar secured to` the bar 29b at the upper end by means of a bolt 31, a spacer 32 being interposed between thetwo bars. Both the bars 29 and 29b are secured tothe blockv24 by riveting or any other acceptable fastening means.
A soft insert 33 is removably supported in the base casting 24 and spans the space between the knife guide 29`and the upright bar 27, this insert consisting preferably of a block of wood carried in a dove-tailed slot in the base casting and functioning to prevent damage to the cutting edge of the implement used in the knife guide.
The article placed in the casing and which it is desired to slice, such as a portion o1 meat indicated at 341 is subject to lateral pressure from the plate 11 through the instrumentality ot the spring 17 `so that it is maintained in close contact with the side wall or plate l2. The article is 'fed forwardly across the soft insert 33 by means of a follower 35, the latter being anchored to chains 36 engaging sprockets 37 carried upon a vertical shaft 38. The chains are also trained around the idler roll 30 and are provided with contractile inserts 39 in the form ot springs. By means of the inserts the chains are maintained always under tension and by virtue of their engaging the sprockets 37 the follower is positively fed forwardly upon rotation of the shaft 38 which has a lower journal in the base castingr 24 and an upper journal in a bearing el() carried by a plate 4l secured to the top wall l5. The upper end of the shaft l() is provided with a hand wheel 4t2 by which manual turningr movement may be imparted to the shaft 3S.
A -arrying handle 4?) is secured to the caeinpr on the top wall 15 and serves as a means by which the whole device may be readily moved from one point to another.
In the use of the device, if the follower 35 be disposed within the lasing, the shaft 3S is rotated right-handedly as viewed from the top which serves to withdraw the follower from the casing and permit the insertion therein of the article to be sliced. The plate ll by virtue of the springr 17 cX- erts a lateral pressure on the article and it is held against theside wall 1Q, except where the presence of the chains 36 prevents this, and is fed 'forwardly acrossl the knife guide as left-hand turning` movement is imparted to the shaft 3S and the follower has1 been broughtl into engagement with the article. The extension of the article across the hui fe guide determines the thickness of the slice to be cut by the knife or other cuttingr device inserted through the guide and held in Contact with the edge of the bar QG. lVlien the desired number of slices have been removed, the article may be allowed to remain in the slieer and the latter placed in ay suitable container or in a refrigerator until it is desired to again use the contained article.
The plate 1l is susceptible of ready removal to permit eleansinT of the casing. the
withdrawal of the screw Q8 and the movcment forwardly of the late ll to divengage the hook 22 from the looped portion of the spring 27 permittingr the removal of the plate ll, so that the interior of the casing becomes readily accessible.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A device for the purpose indicated comprising4 a casingr of which one wall coosists of a loosely mounted plate yieldingly impellcd toward the opposite wall, a positively actuated follower traversingthe casing, and a knife guide mounted atone end of the easing.
Q. A device for the purpose indicated comprising; an open-ended casing of which one side wall consists of a plate movable toward the other side wall. ay sprint hearing upon the plate at one end to yicldingrlv iinpel it toward the other side wall. and a follower traversincY the casing and provided with a positive actuating means, the caminer having a knife 'ruido at one end.
3. A device for the purpose indicated comprising an open-ended asing having.y a knife Aruido at one end, a follower travelsingr the casinara follower actuatintI shaltV provided with sprocket wheelf= an idler roll at the remote end of the casingn and chains trained over the idler roll and over the sprocket wheel, the follower beine' anchored to said chains and the latter beiner provided with contractile inserts to maintain them continually under tension.
In testimony whereof he aflixcs his signature.
