UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. GLADDEN, JR., OF WATHENA, KANSAS.
TIRE-CHAIN FASTENER.
Application led March 7, 1928. Serial No. 259,755.
chains.
My principal aim has been to generally improve upon fasteners of this class, by providing one which is characterized by new features cooperating in a novel manner to provide a new contribution to the art.
Another object is to provide a structure of this class which is individual in design and construction, simple and inexpensive, and capable of fulfilling the requirements of a device of this class.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure lis an elevational view of a fastener constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view the parts.
of one of Figure 3 is an elevational view showing the.
parts connected together and swung about the pivot to clearly indicate the method of operation.
In carrying out the invention, I provide a pair of substantially duplicate members, each of which is designated by the reference character 4. Each member, as plainly shown in Figure 2 comprises a body or shank portion 5, one end of which is provided with a hook 6, and the opposite end of which is formed with an especially designed clasp.
This embodies a tongue 7 and a spaced parallel finger 9. `These portions cooperate in forming` somewhat a U-shaped keeper. The two parts are disposed in an overlapping or side by side relation and pivotally connected together through the medium of a rivet or its equivalent 10. In addition, they are formed with openings 11 adapted to be brought into alignment with each other.
The pivot being at the center of the body pprtion, it is obvious that when the two parts are swung together, the tongues bridge the entrance openings of the hook, thereby effecting a closure for the hook. In addition, the
hook is received in the keeper seat provided by the presence of the fingers 9, thereby maintaining the two members in closed relationship. It is obvious that by constructing the parts in this way, the device may operate to connect the ends of the chain together, or may be utilized as a temporary repair link. If necessary, a rivet (not shown) may be fastened to the aligned opening ll, to literally lock the parts together.
The simplicity of the invention is such as to permit persons to obtain a clear understanding of the invention by reading the description in connection with the drawing. Consequently, a more lengthy description is regarded unnecessary.
Minor changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to, if desired.
' I claim:
l. A device of the class described comprising a pair of duplicate parts pivotally connected together, said parts being formed at their outer ends with hooks, and the inner ends being formed with retaining tongues adapted to bridge the entrance portions of the hooks, said retaining tongues extending directly at right angles to said hook.
2. As a new product of manufacture, a fastener of the class described comprising a pair of duplicate parts pivotally connected together in overlapping relation, each part comprising a flat body portion formed at its outer end with a hook and at its inner end with a ,right angularly disposed extension providing a tongue for cooperation with the adjacent hook to operate as a retainer.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a fastener of the class described comprising a pair of duplicate parts, each comprising a fiat shank portion formed at one end with an extension tongue and a finger bent in spaced relation with respect to said tongue to provide a keeper seat, the member being provided at its opposite end with a hook, the shank portions of the respective members beingpivotally connected together in a manner so that when they are swung together, the tongues will bridge the entrance portion of the respective hooks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
