Description

Filed Dec. 15, 1927 H. T. HERR TURBINE INVENTOR l-l-T-Herr QNB M ATJ'ORNEY Patented Aug. 14, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT T. HERB, OF MERION, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 'IO WESTINGHOUSE ELEC- TBIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TURBINE.
Application filed December 15, 1927. Serial No. 240,236.
My invention relates to elastic fluid turbines, and more particularly to means for securing the blading therein, and it has for an object, to improve the construction of apparatus of this character.
In turbine construction, the blades are sometimes secured in circumferential grooves by means of dove-tail, or other similar interlocking connections, the respective grooves being enlarged at suitable polnts to permit the root portions of the blades to be inserted, one at a time, after which the blades are moved around to their proper positions.
WVith this type of construction, it is desirable to have a simple, inexpensive and yet very effective means for securing a blade in the enlarged portion of a groove. Also, since the blades, when removed, must be taken out through the enlarged portion of a groove, it is advantageous to have a blade so held in the enlarged portion of a groove that it may be readily removable.
More particularly, therefore, an object of my invention is to provide a turbine of the type described with simple and effective means for securing a blade in the enlarged portion of a circumferential groove, which means shall be so constructed and arranged as to facilitate assembly and removal of the blades.
Apparatus embodying the features of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a-plan view of a portion of a turbine rotor with the blades removed; and,
a Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a tur-.
' serted one at a time and moved around to 'tions, without departing from the spirit In Fig. 1, a turbine rotor 10 is provided with a circumferential groove 11 in which the blades are secured. The groove 11 is enlarged at 12 so that the blades may be intheir proper positions in the groove.
In Fig. 2, a blade 13, of any suitable design, is shown with its root portion 14 secured in the enlarged section 12 of the groove 11. Pins 16, or the like, are forced through holes 17, in the rim of the rotor 10, so that the inner ends 'of the pins project into the recesses 18 of the root 1 1 of the blade. These pins 16 preferably fit the holes 17 with a driving fit, and after the inner ends of the pins have been firmly driven against the root of the blade the outer ends of the holes 17 are peened over the outer ends of the pins 16 so as to still further assure that the pins will not become dislodged inoperation. The holes 17 are preferably inclined downwardly as shown so as to facilitate the insertion of the ins 16. To remove the blade, it is mere y necessary to drill out the pins 16.
While I have shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modificathereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
What Iclaim is v 1. In an apparatus of the type described, the combination with a rotor having a circumferential groove for retaining the blading therein, said groove having an enlarged portion to permit the blades to be inserted and removed, of a blade root having recesses therein and inserted in the enlarged portion of said groove and pins having their inner ends disposed against the recessed portions of the blade root, said pins being compressed in said rotor.
2. In an apparatus of the type described,
the combination with a rotor having a circumferential groove for retaining the bladmg thereln, said groove having an enlarged portion to permit the blades to be inserted rotor, portions of said rotor being peened and removed, of a' blade root having recesses over the outer ends of said pins. therein and inserted in the enlarged portion In testimony whereof, I have hereunto 10 of said groove and pins inclined toward the subscribed my name this 7th day of Decem- 5 blade root havingjtheir inner ends disposed ber, 1927.
againstithe recessed portionsiofw the blade v 7 root, said pins being compressed in said HERBERT T. HERB.
