ROAD SIGN.v
Application filed january 22, 192"7. Serial in. 162,861.
This invention relates to a road sign, the general object of the invention being to pro vide means for indicating the situation of the road ahead so that the driver of a veh1- cle observing the sign will know whether he is to make a turn or is to keep straight ahead.
Another object of the invent'on is to provide means whereby the sign can be adjusted after being set up to indicate the situation of the road at the particular place where the sign is used.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specificially pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the improved sign.
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a rear view of the sign.
In these views, 1 indicates the body of the sign which is preferably formed of circular shape and of any desired material and color. It is fastened to the posts 2 alongside the road. The body is provided with a semicircular slot 3 in its upper part and with a central hole 4. A reflector 5 has its mouth portion fastened to the walls of the hole 4 and a lens 6, preferably of red color, is placed in the mouth of the reflector. Guideways 7 are formed at the sides of the slot 3 at the rear thereof and a reflector 8 is provided with the flanges 9 to engage these guideways so that the said reflector 8 can be placed in any desired position in the slot 3. After it is placed in adjusted position. it is held therein by means of the bolts 10 which pass through holes formed in the body, the flanges and the guideways, as shown in Figure 2. After these bolts are put inplace and the nuts tightened seals 11 are placed through eyes in the bolts to prevent the parts from being tampered with. lens 12, preferably of green color, is carried bythe reflector 8. An arrow 13 is also painted or otherwise placed on the body which registers with the lens 12 of the reflector 8 so that the s'gn can be easily read during the day as well as at night. it being understood that the reflectors 5 and 8 will pick up rays of light from the headlamps of a vehicle at night and reflect them in such a manner that the driver can readily see and read the sign.
F romthe above it will be seen that this sign will indicate to a driver of a vehicle that he is about to strike a turn in the road or that the road is straight, it being understood that the reflector 8 and the arrow 13 are so placed on the body of the sign as to indicate the degree of angle of the turn or if said parts are placed in vertical position at the top of the body, the driver will know that the road keeps straight ahead.
By this invention, all the signs can be constructed in the factory and then set up, after which they are adjusted to indicate the condition of the road directlyahead of them. Of course, the arrow must be painted on the slgns after they are adjusted. Vith this invention, it is not necessary to place a particular sign at a particular location, as any one of a number of signs can be set up in a location and adjusted to suit this location.
It will also be understood that the position of the green light relative to the central red light will indicate the turn or that the road is straight.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within thescope of the appended claims.
What I claimis:-
1. A'road sign comprising a body, a support for the same, said body having a central opening and a semi-circular slot in its upper portlon, a reflector in the open ng, and a reflector adjustably mounted in the slot.
2. A road sign comprising a body, a support for the same, said body having a central opening and a semi-circular slot in its upper portion, a reflector in the opening, a colored lens carried by the reflector, a reflector adjustably mounted in the slot, a lens of a different color in said last mentioned reflecslot and an arrow painted or otherwise placed on the body and intersecting the refiector in the slot.
4. A road sign comprising a body, a centrally arranged reflector on the body, a second reflector adjustably mounted on the body so thatit can be moved in an are which is concentric with the first reflector and means for fastening the second reflector in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
NELSON S. JEWETT.
