ROBERT B. MITCHELL, 0F ALBION, MICHIGAN,-ASSIGNOR TO UNION STEEL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN.
STRUCTURAL UNIT.
Application led August 2, 1926. Serial No. 126,646.
The main object of thisinvention is to provide a structural unit for use in attaching Hoor sleepers to concrete foundations.
A further object is to provide a structural unit of the character indicated in which a plurality of floor clips may be si multaneously set or placed-in proper spaced relation.
A still further object is to provide a structural unit of the class described which greatly facilitates the placing ofthe floor clips and one in which the clips are securely anchored and retained throughout the fioor even though certain clips might fail of eHective anchorage. v
Further objects pertaining to details of operation will appear from the detailed description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. l is a conventional plan view of a "i concrete foundation having a series of my of one of the structural units.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33 of ig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a pair of clips attached to a sleeper.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of a modified form of my improved structural unit, the modification being in the form of anchoring prongs. n
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation showing another modification in the form of the anchoring prongs.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the concrete foundation of. a fioor and 2 one of the sleepers. In Fig. l I show a plurality of my improvedstructural units in position on the foundation, each structural unit comprising rods 3 of wire or light rods of suitable gauge, to which are secured a plurality of pairs of sleeper clips 4. These clips are preferably formed of wire and secured '1n roper spaced relation in coacting pairs and 1n proper spacing of the pairs, preferably being attached by electric welding, as in Fig. 3. 4
The clips are mounted transversely on the rods, providing concrete or? foundation- 1 engaging prongs 5 and bendable sleeper attaching wires 6, these members terminating in hook-like eyes 7. y
In practice the structural units are placed in propler position on the concrete foundation w ile in plastic condition and pushed or pressed down until the prongs are imbedded and also the rods are imbedded with their upper sides flush with the surface of the concrete. lfVhen in this position the concrete is allowed to set or harden, and workmen may travel over the clips which bend down or lie upon the concrete until it is desired to place the sleepers, when the parts 6 are bent up at the sides of the sleepers and securedthereto by nails, as indicated at 8.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the anchoring prongs 9 are bent to increase the grip upon the concrete, and in Fig. 6 the ends 10 of the prongs 11 are bent laterally for the same purpose. However, the prongs are very effectively anchored because the sleepers lie upon the rods and serve to hold the prongs in place even though one anchoring prong might become loosened from the concrete or be improperly imbedded therein. Several sleepers, it will be noted, lie across the rods 3 and would serve to holdl such loosened clips in place. l
My improved structural units greatly facilitate the laying or the placing of the clips, insure accuracy in spacing, and are highly efficient as an anchoring means for the sleepers. I have illustrated and described my improvements in embodiments which have proven highly satisfactory.. I have not attempted to illustrate other modifications or adaptations which Icon-template, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those.
skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having lthus described my invention what Letdisposed ytransversely of and welded to said` longitudinalrod with their angles above the longitudinal rod, said members being disposed in coacting pairs with the arms of the pairs projecting outwardly in a plane approximately parallel with the rod to be bent los relation lto project at each side thereof, the projections at one side constituting anchoring members, the projections at the other side being disposed in a plane approximately parallel with the longitudinal rod and adapted to be bent to an upright position for attachment to the members to be secured.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ROBERT B. MITCHELL.
