IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,033, dated September 21, 1875 application filed August 21, 1875.
' of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Root and Cabbage Cutters; and do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a transverse vertical section 0f my root and cabbage cutter, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to vegetablecutters; and the nature of my invention consists in a rectilinear reciprocating hopper bottom, operated as will be hereinafter explained, andhaving adjustably secured to it, over a discharge-opening, a double cutting edge knife, which is longitudinally slotted, and provided With vertical knives, in combination with slotted plates applied to the ends of the hopper, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the frame of my improved vegetable-cutter, and B is a drawer for receiving the cut vegetables, which drawer is arranged beneath ahopper, C. D designates a hopper bottom, which is, preferably, made of metal, and which receives a rectilinear reciprocating motion between guides a a from a crank, b, on a shaft, E, through the medium of a pitman-rod, F. The crank-shaft E carries on one end a balancewheel, G, and on the other end a pinion spurwheel, c. The wheel c engages with a larger wheel, H, on a short shaft, d, xed to the upper portion of frame A, which wheel has a hand-crank secured to it. (Shown in Fig. 1 The hopper C is secured to standards risin from frame A by means of bolts which pass `through vertically-oblong slots in said standards, by loosening which bolts the hopper can be raised or depressed. At each end of the hopper, and rigidly secured to it inside, is a comb-plate, g, the comb portion of which extends below the lower edge of the hopper for a purpose hereinafter explained. J designates a knife having two cutting edges, which knife is secured to the hopper bottom trailsverse] y with respectto the length thereof, and arranged over an opening, h, through this bottom, ythrough which opening the cuttingsare discharged into the drawer B. The two-edged knife J has its cutting edges formed by underybevelin'g, and the thickness of cut of this knife is gaged by means of thick or thin blocks f f placed beneath its ends. The upper side of the knife J has a groove in it extending from one end to the other of it, in which groove I secure vertical two-edge knives, lc, arranged at suitable distances apart, and se'- cnred to the knife by means of bolts or screws, so that they can be removed or replaced at pleasure. These knives perform the vertical cuts, and at the termination of each stroke they pass through the comb-plates. The knife J performs the shaving-cuts in going back and forth, and the cuttings, as before stated, drop into the drawer B.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is
The horizontal transverse double-cutting knife J adjustably secured to the reciprocating hopper bottom D, over a hole, h, and grooved longitudinally, in combination with vertical knives k and combs g, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
