Description

Patented Sept.21,l875.
MFETERS. PNOTO-UYNOGPAPMER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES DUFFY, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,002, dated September 21, 1875; application filed June 26, 1875.-
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES DUFFY, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of heating-stoves known to the trade as the Todd stove; and it consists in constructing such stove of a cast-iron jacket with oval or bulged ends, and having the exit pipe in the center of either side, and an interior chamber to cause the smoke and heat to circulate to the back end of the stove and then forward to the exitpipe, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
A represents the jacket, made of cast-iron, and secured to thefront B and back 0 bymeans of screw-rods a a. The front and back are made ovalor bulged out, as shown. This stove is of the class generally known to the trade as a Todd stove, but instead of having the exit-pipe at the back it is formed-on the side, either the right or left, with a flue, D, terminating at the top in an ordinary stove-pipe collar, 01.
On the inside of the jacket Ais formed or attached a chamber, E, which incloses the aperture b to the flue D, and extends to the back 0 of the stove. This chamber is closed all around except at the rear, where an entrance, e, is made into the same, thereby causing the smoke and heat to pass entirely to the back of the stove, and then enter the chamber E and pass forward to the flue D and out through the exit-pipe.
From the front end of the chamber E to the front end of the stove extends a grating, G; This grating, with the chamber, protects the entire side where the exit-flue is situated from contact with the fuel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the stoveA B O, having exit-flue D on one side of the chamber E, having rear aperture 6, and the grating G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
I11 testimony that I claim. the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day, of May, 1875.
JAMES DUFFY.
