CONTAINER Application filed September 9, 1926, Serial No.
This invention relates to containers for holding liquid, and is directed particularly to containers adapted for holding liquid fuels, illuminating oils and the like.
Heretofore, liquid fuels and illuminating oils, have been either conveyed in bulk or in drums or tins, and in the latter case, the this are discarded after being emptied. The valueof the tins discarded is considerable.
When drums are used considerable space in stowage aboard ship, and elsewhere is wasted, owing to the shape of the drums, and the return freight on empty drums is as much as the outward freight on full drums, moreover the drums only last a liew trips and are discarded thereby entailing further loss.
The present invention has 'for its object the provision of means whereby a tin receptacle of comparatively largedimensions may be used for conveying a large bulk of liquid without fear of damage to the receptacle and so as to result in a considerable saving of tin for a given quantity of liquid, the shape of the container being such, that little or no space is lost, in stowing numbers thereof,
A further provision of the invention is to make the container collapsible so that after it has been emptied, it jean be taken to pieces, packed. into a small space and be returned to the place whence it came, and used repeatedly. Being collapsible, the containers may be returned as deck cargo, or stowed elsewhere on board ship, as is most convenient and economical. The container provided by this invention comprises a receptacle in which the liquid is placed, and a protective casing in sections adapted to be secured around said receptacle. The protective casing is strengthened and the sections thereof secured together by means of external ribs, preferably horizon tal and vertical angle iron ribs secured to the sections so as to project beyond the latter, the ribs of each section overlapping the ribs of other sections, whereby said sections may be secured together by fastenings passed through the overlapping ribs at the corners of the container.
The casing is lined with felt, and the top, the bottom and the ends thereof are flanged,

and ends and the latter to embrace the sides channels being also provided on said sides toreceive the flanges of the top and the bottom. 1
"When the casing is taken to pieces, the top and the bottom are capableo't being secured togethertoprovide a container for the ends and sides, some of the ribs on said ends and sides being detachable therefrom inorder to facilitate packing of the sections.
'lheinvention will be further described, with the aid of the accompanying drawing wherein i l Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 a plan view and Figure 3 an end view of the improved container while,
Figure 4: is a part sectional viewof a side and top, illustrating a detail of construction and a t Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectionot the casing, dismantled and packed to save space, when not being used.
The protective casing comprises sides 1, ends 2, top 3 andbottom 4t, all made of sheet steel or sheet iron, and formed so that the casing when assembled will have all right angle corners, whereby numbers of containers maybe stowed together without loss of: space, a
The sides, ends, top and bottom, are all lined with felt 5, to serve as padding to a sealed, receptacle 6 (Figure 4) destined to hold the liquid to be transported, and which the protectivecasing is made to enclose.
The top 8 and bottom a are flanged all round as at 8 and 4e respectively, the top being strengthened by a longitudinal angle iron 7 either bolted or welded thereto, and having cross angle irons 8 bolted to the angle iron 7, while the bottom 4 is strengthened by a longitudinal angle iron 9 either bolted or welded thereto and has cross angle irons 10, bolted'to the angle iron 9.
The sides 1 have vertical angle irons 11, either bolted or welded thereto to strengthen same with horizontal angle irons 12 bolted to said angle irons 11, while the ends 2 have vertical angle irons 13 either bolted or Welded thereto, and horizontal angle irons 14; bolted to said angle irons 13.
All oi the angle irons project beyond the the top and the bottom to embrace the sides edges of the top, bottom, sides and ends.
The ends 2 are formed with flanges 2 to embrace the ends of the sides 1, while the flanges 3", and 4, of the top 3 and bottom 4 are provided to embrace the upper and lower edges of the sides 1 and ends 2.
Channels 15 formed by securing Z irons to the upper and lower edges of the sides 1 and ends '2 are rovided to receive the flanges 3 and 4", of t e top 3 and bottom 4.
The upper and lower ends of the vertical angle irons 11 and 13 of the sides 1 and ends 2 respectively, are set out from said sides and ends to permit the flanges 3 and 4 of the top and bottom to pass between said angle irons and the sides and ends and into the channels 15.
In assembling the casing around a liquid filled receptacle 6, the vertical angle irons 11 of thesides 1, are bolted to the cross angle irons 8 and 10 of the top 3 and bottom 4, the horizontal angle irons .12 of said sides being bolted to the horizontal angle irons 14; of the ends 2, While the Vertical angle irons of the latter are bolted to the longitudinal angle irons 7 and 9 of the top 3 and bottom 4, all of the joints just effected being made at corners of the container.
This securing of the sections of the casing together combined with the flanging of the top, bottom and ends, and the insertion of the flanges 3 and 4 in the channels 15, ensures a rigid and strong protective casing being provided for the liquid receptacle 6.
In order to pack the casing to economize s ace, as when same is being returned empty t e casing is taken to pieces, and the angle irons 8, 10, 12 and 14 removed from the top 3, bottom, 4, sides land ends '2 respectively.
The sides 1, ends 2 and detached angle irons, are placed between the top and bottom 3 and 4-, which are fitted flange to flange and secured together by lugs 16 on one of the flanges, being secured preferably by screwing to the otherof said flanges.
An inlet and outlet provided with a screw cap 18 enables liquid to be placed within and emptied from the container to which a vent 19 provided with a screwcap is also Letters Patent of the United States of America is 1. A container comprising areceptacle of relatively fragile material, a protective casing surrounding said receptacle and composed of sectional members arranged to cover the surfaces of the receptacle, a cushion lining on the inner face of said sections, and reinforcing ribs on the outer surface of said sections extending at an angle to the edges of each section and projecting beyond said edges, the projected end of said ribs of adjacent sections being detachably secured together.
2. A container comprising a casing having top, bottom, sides and end walls, the end walls being flanged to embrace the adjacent edges of the side walls, the top and bottom walls being flanged to embrace adjacent edges of the end and side walls, channels on the end and side walls to rcceive the flanges of said top and bottom walls, reinforced ribs on the outer face of said walls and projecting beyond the edges of said walls, corresponding ends of the ribs of adjacent walls being arranged to lie in close position when the parts are assembled, and means for dctacha-bly securing said adjacent ends of said ribs together.
.3. A container comprising a casing having top, bottom, side and end walls, the end walls being flanged to embrace the adjacent edges of the side walls, the top and bottom walls being flanged to embrace adjacent edges of the end and side walls, channels on the end and side walls to receive the flanges of said top and bottom walls, reinforcing ribs on the outer face of said walls and projecting beyond the edges of said walls, corresponding ends of the ribs of adjacent walls being arranged to lie in close position when the parts are assembled, means for detachably securing said adjacent ends of said ribs together, and certain of said ribs on the wall sections being removable, whereby when the edges of the flange of the top and bottom walls are placed together a receptacle is provided for housing all of the remaining parts of the casing, when in knocked-down position, and means for securing the flanges of the bottom wall together for holding said parts in compact knocked-down relation.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN WALTER MGCONNON.
