"UNITED STATES PATENT REESE, O1? JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Application filed January 26, 1925 Serial No. 4,877,
This invention relates to iu'iprovements in sectional clamps tor cables and is more particularly adapted to a detacluible connection tor use in conjunction with the cables or wires of a lightning atrrester such as is embodied in my copending application.
Uneo-t the important objects ol the present invention is to providea detachable connection which is of such construction as to enable the same to be readily assembled or disassembled thesimplicity thereof enabling considerable time and labor to be saved in its use. i i
it further object is to provide a detachable connection of the above mentioned character, which will at all tin'ies be positive and ellic-ient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designated, the same being further simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted :tor the purposes for Wl'llOli it is designated.
@ther objects and advantagesof this in vention Will become apparent during the course oi the following description.
Th the accompanying drawings liorn'iing a part of this specification, and in which like ntunerals designate like parts throughout the same:
ll igure l is a side elevation oi the detachable connection associated with the adjacent ends of the elongated vertically extending wire and the ground wire.
Figures 2 and 3 are elevational views of the sections oi? said last mentioned connection, and
lBigure 4t is a. detail perspective view of the wire securing means associated with said dotachable connection.
ed at at. A pair oi? cooperating channels 5 and 6 are arrangedin the inner opposed faces oi the complementary sections 2 and 3 the same extending from the lower end to one side ottthc intermediate portion of the connection. for receiving the upper end i of the ground wire A.
A. similar pair of cooperating channels 7 and 8. are arranged 1n the upper portions of the inner faces oi the complementary sections, the construction thereof being clearlyillustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The cooperating grooves 7 and 8 respectively provide an opening for receiving the lower end of the wire B which extends downwardly along the outer wall of the chimney. l
The lower end of the inner section 2, is provided with the laterally extending ears 9, the same being provided with internally threaded openings 10 for registry with the openings 1.1 provided in the laterally extending cars 12 formed on the lower end of the complementary outer section 3 whereby the fastening screws 13 afford a means for scour-- ing the lower ends of the complementary sections together. The upperend of the inner section 2 is provided with a pair of hitorally extending cars 14, the latter being provided with the openings 15 for receiving the tongues 16 formed on the upper end'oi? the outer section 3 whereby an interlocking and interfitting connection betwecn the up per ends oi the complementary sections is provided.
For the purpose of securing the portions of the wires which are disposed in the intermediate portions of the sections of the connection 1, I provide the wire engaging member 17 which is removably disposed in the opening 18 provided thereiorin the'intermediate poltion of the outer section '3, the opening "18 being arranged diagonally and communicating with the cooperating channels of the section. This wire engaging member comprises a substantially bloclolike body 2 that is of such size to {it within the opening 18 formed in the outer section 3. A plate-like member is formed on the upper or outer face of this block and is of greater size than the block, and. the inner face of this plate like portion will engage the outer .l'ace of the outer section around the opening 18. The bottom face of the rectangular block 24 is cut away at each end as illustrated at 26 and a transversely extending teeth 27 is formed in each of the cut away portion s. These teeth bite into the ends ()it the respective wires or cable that are arranged in the cooperating channels provided therefor in the inner opposed faces of the sections of the connection. An enlarged opening 28 extends centrally through IOU tachable connection 1 is adapted to be supported in a rigid position adjacent the chimney through the medium of a bracket 21.
This bracket comprises the complementary sections 22 and 23 which are detachably secured together by a tongue and slot connection29 atone end and by a screw 30 at the other end.v The bracket is secured on the outside'of the chimney so that the inner sectionwillybe disposed between the chimney .and the inner section of the detachable'connection embodying my invention, and the outer section of this bracketcnc-ircles the upperouter sect on of the connection as vclearly illustrated in Figure 1. This bracket a is adapted-to be supported on the chimney in any appropriate manner.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description,-, that detachable connecting means-has been provided for use in connection with thewiresor cables of the lightning arrester'system embodied in my copending application .whereby' the several wires or cables may be readily connected or disconnected without the loss of any considerable length of time or labon Furthermore, the provision of connecting means of the above mentioned character, will :obviate the necessity of having to splice the wires or otherwlse prov de a permanent connection therebetween. The simplicity in which my various detachable connections are constructed will enable the same to be readily and easily vadjust ed and-furthermore will prevent any possibility of the displacement of the wires I I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a connection including a pair of complementary sections, said sections being provided with cooperating channels for receiving the end portions of a pair of cables, the intermediate portion of one of said sections being provided with an opening which communicates with the channels formed in said sections, a member adapted to be disposed within the opening for securing the free ends of the cables in said connection, and means for detachably securing the sections together.
2. A device 01 the class described comprising a connection including a pair of complementary sections, said sections being provided with cooperating channels adapted to receive the end portions of a pair of cables, the intermediate portion of one of said sections being provided with an o )cning which communicates with the channe s formed in said section, a block adapted to be secured in said' opening, said block being provided with channels adapted for cooperation with the adjacent portion of the channels in the other sections for securing the free ends of the cables in said sections, and means for detachably securing said complementary sections together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRY HEESE.
