CEILING CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates to the construction of CGllll'lgS of buildings of various kinds and classes, and particularly to buildings employing sheet metal joists forming the floor and ceiling structure, and the object of the invention is to provide strips or sheets of metal adapted to be mounted upon the lower flanges of I-beam joists to form the ceiling with rip-turned flanges on the lower flanges of the I-beam joists for retaining said strip or sheet in fixed position; and with these and other objects in view the invention con sists in a ceiling construction of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are desig nated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view through two floor joists illustrating one form of ceiling construction which I employ;
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1 but showing only a part of the construction, and showing a modification;
Fig. 3 is a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing another modification;
Fig. 5 a perspective detail view of a part of the strip or sheet employed in the construction shown in Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of the strip or sheet employed in the construction shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I haveshown one form of construction wherein floor joists 10 are of I-beam form in cross section, and in the construction shown are made up of a number of sheet metal parts consisting of a central plate part 10 to which is secured top flange parts 10 and lower flange parts 10, the lower flange parts 10 having at 1926. Serial No. 110,672.

In this form of construction, I, employ sheet metal ceiling strips or sheets 11, the sides of which are provided with downwardly turned flanges 11?- adapted to engage the flanges 10 of adjacent joists 10 in the manner shown. The usual flooring of any kind or class 12 is mounted upon the joists and if desired upon a body 13 of concrete or any other suitable fireproof material, it being understood, however, that the body 13 may or may not be employed.
The strips or sheets 11, in the construction shown in Fig. 1, will form the ceiling structure and will extend longitudinally of the joists from one wall to another, the ends being preferably interlocked in a manner similar to that shown at in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and it will be seen that the lower faces of the joist will form a beam-like projection in the ceiling to produce a beam effect. However, the ceiling strips or sheets 11 may be brought flush with the lower faces of the joist 10, by providing at the side portions thereof, hook-shaped flanges 11 as seen in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawing. It will also be understood that, if desired, the lower face of the ceiling formed by my improved ceiling strips or sheets of metal may be covered or faced. by any suitable material, as indicated in dotted lines at 12 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, or the metal may be exposed and coated with a paint, stain or other substance to produce the desired appearance, it being understood that the exposed joists may be painted or colored contrastingly to that of the strips or sheets.
In Fig. d of the drawing, l have shown another modiflcatirm wherein joists 13 of plain I-beam construction are employed and strips 01' sheets of plain or flat sheet metal 1d are mounted within and between, and rest upon the lower flanges 13 of the joists 13.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the distinctive feature of my invention resides in the supporting of sheet metal strips 01' sheets upon, or in connection with the lower portions of the joists to form of said strips or sheets and intermediate of said joists, and also of said joists, a ceiling construction and especially a structure of this kind which will be fireproof to the greatest possible degree, and which will also be strong and durable, and which can be constructed at a very nominal expense, especially as co1npared to'wooden and wire lathing and similar constructions now in common use and known to the trade. It is understood that the strips or sheets. will be cut to predetermined sizes to suit the spacing of joists in the construction of buildings of various kinds and classes, and While I have shown and described certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, it will be apparent that I am not necessarily limited thereto, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the'sp'irit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; In a ceiling construction, the combination with spaced and parallel floor joists of I-beam cross sectional form, of strips of sheet metal transversing the spaces between said joists and extending longitudinally of the lower end portions thereof, and resting upon the lower flanges of said joists, and with the lower faces of said strips flush and parallel with the lower faces of said joists.
2. In a ceiling construction, the combination with spaced and parallel floor joists of I-beam cross sectional form, of strips of sheet metal transversing the spaces between said joists and extending longitudinally of the lower end portions thereof, and resting upon the lower flanges of said joists, and
' the side portions of said strips having U- shaped flanges interlocking with rip-standing flanges at the opposite sides of the lower flange of said joists.
3. In a ceiling constructlon, the combination with spaced and )arallel floor joists of I-beam cross sectional form, of strips of sheet metal transversing the spaces between said joists and extending longitudinally of the lower end portions thereof, and resting upon the lower flanges of said joists, the side portions of said strips having U-shaped flanges interlocking with u 'i-standing flanges at the opposite sides of the lower flange of said joists, and the lower faces of said joists being exposed through the ceiling structure to form a beamed ceiling eii'ect.
4. A ceiling construction comprising spaced sheet metal joists of I-beani cross sectional form arranged in parallel relation and having upwardly directed side flanges, and sheet metal strips transversing the spaces between said joists and extending longitudinally thereof, and supported in connection therewith to form the ceiling structure, and the side portions of said strips having integral means for interlocking the. same with said flanges on said joists.
5. A ceiling construction ('O]1l])l'lSlH spaced sheet metal joists of I-beani cross sectional form arranged in parallel relation and having upwardly directed side flanges, and sheet metal strips transversing the spaces between said joists and extending longitudinally thereof, and supported in connection therewith to form the ceiling structure, the side portions of said strips ha ring integral means for interlocking the same with said flanges on said joists, and the adjacent ends of said strips being overlapped.
