IRON IN G MACHINE.
Application med August 16.1926. serial No. 129,300.
yrollers are shifted and operated in novel manner.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, an embodiment of which is villustated in the drawings, in which drawings [Figure 1 is a perspective view of a machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 a rear elevational view of the same; Fig. 3 a side elevational view of the roller shifting mechanism, the lower roller being elevated; Fig. 4a view similar to Fig. 3, the lower roller-being in its lowered position; Fig. 5 a plan view of the support for the lower roller; Fig. 6 an elevational view of the lower roller driving mechanism and Fig. 7 al cross-section online 7-7 ofFig. 6.
' Referring to the illustrative embodiment of the invention, 1 represents the frame or standard of the machine adapted preferably for movable support on the Hoor. Projecting laterally from the upper part 'of the frame. The upper or otherl source of power.
closes the pulleys and the belt.
- frame is a bracket lwith a gear 17 2 in which one end of a shaft -3 is revolubly supported, the opposite end Vof the shaft being supported lin the or heating roll 3 is secured to this shaft and' is adapted to be heated in any suitable manner. A worm gear 4 within the frame is secured to the shaft and meshes with a worm 5 secured to a shaft 6 revolubly mounted on the frame and a pulley 7 is secured to a projectin end of the shaft 6. A belt 8 engaged wit the pulley is also engaged Awith a pulley 9 secured to the shaft of an electric motor 10 A guard 11. en-
A gear l2 also meshes with the worm 5 and' is secured to a revolubly mounted shaft 13 which projects through the side wall 1a of the frame. A gear 14 is secured to the projecting end of the shaft 13 and meshes with a gear 15 mounted on a stud 16 projecting from the wall 1n. The gear 14 also meshes mounted on a stud 18 rojecting from a plate 19 that is oosely mounted on the shaft 13. A spring 2O is attached to the plate and to a stud or pin 21 that projects from the wall .on the shaft 24. The lower roll is,
1, and tends to rock the plate toward a stop 21a (Fig. 3). The gear 17 is loosely pinned by the pins 17a to a gear 22'also mounted on the stud 18, and the gear `22 is adapted to mesh with a -gear 23 secured to a shaft 24 that is mounted in one arm.
25a of a bell crank 25 that is secured to a sleeve 26 revolubly mounted on shaft 27 that is .fixed in a bracket 28 secured to the frame and projecting therefrom substantially parallel to the upper roll 3a The loose-pin con nection between the gears 17 and 22 assures proper meshing of the gears 22 and 23,'since the gear 2,2 may then stop or lag momentarily to permit the teeth of the gear 23 to properly engage gear 22 upon shifting the roll 30 toward the roll 3a, thereby avoiding stripping of the gears 22 and 23. An arm 29 is secured to the opposite .end of the sleeve 26 and supports the opposite end of the shaft 24. The lower roll 30 is secured or formed swung on the fixed shaft 27. The'shaft 27 is braced by a rod 27 a shaftby a bolt 27b that extends through the said upper endof the rod and through an enlarged opening 26a in the sleeveinto a threaded opening in the shaft 27 The opening 26' is large enough to permitA the sleeve to rock on the shaft 27.
A link 31 is pivoted to the arm 25b of the bell crank 25 and to one end of a band 32 disposed within a drum-15a formed on or secured to the gear 15, a fabric or other friction band 33 being disposed between the.' band`32 and the annular wall of the drum. Lugs 34 are formed at opposite ends of the band 32 and between said lugs. and pivoted to a fixed plate 35 is a lever 36' having a cam 37 thereon that abuts both the lugs, and which cam, when the lever 36 is rocked in a proper direction', causes the` lugs to separate to cause the friction vband to grip the rotating drum sufficiently to cause the band under the influence of the rotating drum to move clockwise a short distance to reciprocate the link V31 and rock the bell crank, the sleeve 26 and the. arms 25 and 29 to cause the lower roll to approach or contact with the upperroll. A stop 38 is slidably mounted on the wall ,1a and beneath the lever 36 to adjustably control the downward movement of the said lever. The stop engages on one or more pins 39 projecting therefore,
that is secured to thc main frame and is connected at its upper en'd'to the I' 60l 22 is pivotally supported. on the main drive from the' walllL and it isadjusted longitudinally by the screw 40 attached to it and' mounted in a lug 41 pivotally mounted on the plate 1a. A rod 42 is suitably engaged at its upper end to the lever 36, the lower end of the rod being operatively connected to a suitable pedal 43, y the depression of which pedal the lever is rocked on its pivot. Disks 22n and 23a are secured to or formed lon corresponding faces of the gears 22 and 23 which abut 'when the gear 23 is moved toward the ear 22. These plates prevent said gears rom meshing too deeply and binding. When the gear 23 is out of mesh with the gear 22, the plate 19 is moved' clockwi'se by the spring as the gear drops .and eventually abuts the stop 211.y
A. segment member 44 is pivotally mount- I ed on the plate 1a and above the lever 36.
-A and a rod 46 is dpivoted to both the A hand lever 45 is pivoted to the wall 1` disk and the lever. ByA epressing thehand lever the disk is swung into Contact with the lever 36 to rock it just as the depression of the pedal rocks the said lever, the slotted upper end of the rod 42 permitting the lever to move downwardly without reciprocating the rod.
vband to grip the rotating 4drum vwith suicient force to cause the band to move with the drum (clockwise, Fig.` 3). The link 3l travels with the band and rocks the bell crank 25 and the arm 29 to raise the lower roll toward the upper roll and into contact therewith` with such pressure as @he controlledfthrow ofthe lever 36p erm1ts. The gear 23k on the shaft of the lower roll is engaged at the same time with the rotating gear 22 and the latter gear and the plate 19 are swung'upwardly on the shaft 13, the rctating gear 17 moving upwardly on the rotating gear 14. The grip `of the clutch von the drum 15u is not Sufficient to prevent the drum from continuing its lrotation when the movement of the band ceases.
When" the pedal is released the lower roll descends under the infiuence of gravity, the
-clutch mechanism releasingrelatively slowlyfrom the drum so that the roll descends without jar and tlie gear 23 freelyl dis connects from the gear 22. Since the gear shaft 13, it assures of the meshing of the gears 22 and 23 irrespective of the degree of pressure of the lower roll on the upper roll 'or of the nearness of approach of lthe lower roll to the upper roll.
A very refined control of the pressure to be exerted by the lower roll upon the upper roll is thus possible.
It will be noted that Vone driving member-the worm 5 drives both rolls through the connecting gears, the bodily movable roll 3() having a gear 22 revolubly mounted on a pivotal support 19', as a part of its operative connection with the worm.
