Referring to the drawings, which show a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention, I have shown lubricant-expelling means which may include a barrel 11 provided with a rear head 12, into which is threaded a stem 13 carrying the usual piston or plunger for expelling the grease from the barrel. At the discharge end of thebarrel, I have shown a front head 14 carrying coupling and valve means for cooperation with the lubricant-receiving element -15, herein shown as a nipple provided with lateral projections 16. The connecting part 19 is mounted for turningmovement within the coupling sleeve 1.7 and is apertured at 22 to receive and embrace the sides of the projections on the nipple. The preferred form of coupling also pre sents a sealing part 24 reciprocable within 7 the nozzle or coupling sleeve 17 by coo eratmg pin and inclined slot means, the pins 25' being preferably carried by the sealing part 24, as illustrated, and movable within inclined slots 26, 26in the cou ling sleeve.
- In the preferred form of my invention illustrated, the sealing part 24 is centrally apertured at 27 to permit passage of lubricant therethrough, bein transversely slotted at 28 at its rear end an having thereagainst, a valve part 29 (Figs. 2 and 9) having apertures adaptedv to be turned into registeringor non-registering position relative to the slot 28. Relative turning movement between i the sealing part 24 and the valve part 29 is i effected by mechanism providing deferred opening of the valve after the cou ling is completed and insuring closure of t e valve prior to the uncouplin preferred form of my invention illustrated, this deferred action is produced by clutch operation. In the means which may take the form, as illustrated, of the clutch ball 30 of slightly greater diameter than the thickness of the adjacent portion of the coupling sleeve 17 and earned in an opening through said coupling sleeve. Cooperating indentations are provided in the part 18 surrounding the coupling sleeve and in the sealing part 24 therein. Until completion of the coupling operation, the ball clutch 30 occupies the position shown in Fig. 3, partly within the surrounding wall 18.and partly 'within the coupling sleeve so that rotation between these parts cannot be effected. As the coupling sleeve andouterpart are rotated together as by turning the grease gun barrel in clockwise direction, the sealing part 24 ca'nnot rotate therewith because a squared end 40 thereon is entered within the hole 22 of the connection part 19, the part 19 being held against rotation by fitting the head of coupling sleeve 17 relative to the sealing part a coupling sleeve 17.
24 in a clockwise direction will move the sealing part 24 toward the lubricant-reoe1ving end of the nipple 15 to press the sealing washer all thereagainst, this endwise movement being eilected'by the screws 25 cooperating with the inclined slots .26. During this movement, the depression 42 in the sealing part will come opposite the clutch ball 30, and the ball will pass therein to the position illustrated in Fig.4, thereby permitting rotation of the outer wall 18 with the head 14 while permitting the coupling 17 toremain in fixed relation to the sealing part 24. The valve part 29 is secured to the outer wall 18, and, as this is turned relative to'the sealing part 24;, thecooperating ports therein will be brought into register with the slot 28 in the sealing part 2 1, thus opening the valve. The extent of this movement is limited by the screw 50 carried by the outer wall 18 and engaging a slot 51 iin the The connecting sleeve 19 is held in 1135 forward position bythe resilient ring 53 (Figs. 2 and 7 so that there is no opportunity for grit to get in between the end thereof and the interior faces of the flanges 21. Leakage around the valve part 29 and sealing part24 is opposed by an apertured' cup washer 54- secured to the-valve part 29.
Assuming the nipple 15 to be entered in the nozzle prior to rotation thereof, the parts will occupy the relative position shown in Fig. 10. As the gun barrel is rotated to the right, it will turn with it the front head It and outer wall 18 of the nozzle. The coupling sleeve 17 will also turn with it, as it is held in fixed relation to the outer art 17 by the ball 30,- occupying the interloc 'ng position illustrated in Fig. 3. as viewed in Figs. 10 and 2, until the position shown in Fig. 2 is reached with considerable pressure of the sealing washer 41 against the head of the nipple 15; By this time the clutch ball 30 will reach the position shown in Fig. 4, permitting turning movement of the outer part 18 without corresponding movement of the coupling sleeve 17, and such turning movement will be effected by further turning of the barrel 11 until the ports in the valve part29 come in register with the slot 28 in the sealing art 24, at which time the screw50 will ave reached the end of its slot and the coupling and valve opening will have been completed.
Assuming now that the desired amount of lubricant has been expelled, the barrel l1 nevevai' v maybe turned to the left, The first part of this movement cannot etfect relative rotation between the coupling sleeve 17 and the sealing part 24 because the ball-clutch 30 opposes any movement between them. Therefore, the'outer wall 18 will. turn relative to the sealing part 24 and bring the ports in the valve part 29 out ofregister with the slot 28 in the sealing part 24 until the screw 50 has reached the opposite end of the slot 51, at which time the valve will be entirely counterclockwise direction, as viewed from its rear end, will cause the coupling sleeve 17 to turn so that the nipple may be with drawn from the aperture 20, the sealing part 24 being retracted during this uncoupling movement to the position shown in Fig. 10, thus'completing thecycle of operations. it will be noted that during the uncoupling operation, the sealing partial is drawn back against the pressure of the lubricant behind it, and that the valve part 29 reciprocates with the sealing part 2 1 during the coupling and uncoupling operations.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that changes involving omission, substitution, alteration and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made with-' out departing from the sco e of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims:
1. Lubricating apparatus of the class described com rising, in combination, a coupling part or connection with and disconnection from a nipple, an aligned valve, and shiftable clutch means for locking some of the parts of said coupling against relative rotation to insure initial completion of the coupling operation, said clutch means thereafter shiftable to unlock the parts of said coupling to permit opening of said valve.
2. Lubricating apparatus of-the class described, comprising in combination, a coupling part for connection with and discon- DBCtlOIl from a lubricanbreceiving nipple, said coupling including a nozzle sleeve, a sealing part, a valve part and shiftable clutch means, said clutch means operable to lock some of said parts: during coupling to pre vent operation of said valve and other of said parts to prevent uncoupling during valve opening and closing operation.
3. Lubricating apparatus including a lubricantexpelling gun having a barrel containing lubricant and carrying a coupling including a sleeve presenting portions to underlie lateral projections on a lubricantreceiving nipple when coupled to said nipple, said coupling also includmg a sealing part pressed unyieldingly against the end of the nipple when coupled, said sleeve rotatable with the barrel'to efiect coupling thereof to said nipple, and said barrel rotatable with-, out rotation of said sleeve after coupling is completed to eii'ect opening of. a cooperating valve without axial movement of the barrel relative to said sleeve.

Lubricating apparatus comprising a lubricant expelling gun carrying a coupling part having an axial opening to receive a polygonal. portion on a lubricant receiving nipple and chambered interiorly to present flanges to underlie the project-ions presented by the polygonal portion when the latter is entered therein and turned relative thereto, a co-operating sealing part, a valve, a valve operating means and clutch means precluding opening of said valve until the polygonal flanges and sealing part are turned relative to one another a predetermined distance and until the coupling and sealing operation are both completed.
22, Lubricating apparatus of the class described comprising a lubricant expelling compressor having a quick detachable coupling means and a valve means connected to its discharge end, and correlated but nonsynchronously operated clutch mechanism interconnecting said means, said clutch mechanism including apparatus for first engaging one of said means and thereafter engaging the other off-said means.

Lubricating apparatus including a lubricant delivering compressor having a coupling and sealing mechanism for connection With and disconnect-ion from a lubricant receiving nipple, a valve, and coordinated I locking means carried by said coupling and sealing mechanism'for preventing relative rotation between the sealing part and coupling part during valve opening or closing operatlon.

Lubricating apparatus including a lubricant delivering compressor having a cou pling and, sealing mechanism for connection with and disconnection from a lubricant receiving nipple, a valve, and coordinated clutch means carried by said coupling and sealing mechanism for preventing valve opening operation during sealing and coupling' operation and unsealing and uncoupling operation.
25. Lubricating apparatus including a lubricant delivering compressor presenting a coupling'part for connection with 'and dis-,-
