JOSEPH AGULAR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOLDERING-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,969, dated September 2l, 1875; application filed March 24, 1.874.
To all whow it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH AGULAR, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Soldering-Irons specially intended to be used in the capping of oyster and fruit cans, ot' which the followingis a speciiication'; and Ido hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters ofv reference marked thereon.
`My invention consists in means provided for securing the soldering-block, which is in two parts, in a socket attached to the handle, as hereinafter fully described. l

The two parts of the soldering-block, which are semicylindrical, and represented by A, are fitted into the socket B, and kept apart by ribs a', the pressure ot' the screws a clamping the said blocks, and holding them tightly against the ribs. It is found advisable to make the soldering block in two parts, as shown, as it is more easily repaired and sharpened when thus constructed than when solid. The e'ect of the ribs a is to steady the blocks in the socket, and to maintain their shape when the pressure of the screws is placed upon them. It is found that the expansion and contraction of the block, which is of copper, is better provided for when it is made in two parts, and that the circular soldering-edge is kept in better shape with the use ot' the ribs a than when the parts fit together without the intervention of said ribs. The principal use, however, of said ribs is to add to the efficiency of the socket B as a holding device. The handle b screws into the top C of the socket. The pressure-rod D having the cap c is not my invention. Neither is the divided soldering-block; but
What I claim as my invention is The socket B, for holding` the divided block A, provided with the separating-ribs a a', for the purpose specied.
