DESK
PAD.
Application filed Jul 1, 1927. Serial No. 202,903.
This invention relates to improvements in desk pads of that type commonly known as autographic registers, whereln the end of the paper is drawn from a roll over a su1table fiat rigid support where the writing is performed. I Thepr-imary ob ect of the invention 15 to rovide an improved device of the above Eind wherein the paper is fed from the roll away from the user and so as to permit the writin to be convenientlycontmuously performe in a direction opposite to thddlI'GC- tion of paper feed.
A further object is to provide a device of the above kind wherein simple means is provided for effectively guiding the end of the paper over the flat support and for tearing the portion of the paper, which has been written upon, from the unused portlon thereof. a
Another object is to provide convenient means for facilitating manual feeding of the pa er from the roll.
till another object is to provide a device of the above kind which is sunple and durable in construction and comparatlvely inex ensive tomanu-facture. )ther objects will appear as the nature 0 the invention is better understood, andthe same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts herelnafter more full described, shown in the accompanying rawings and'clarm'ed In the drawings, wherein l1ke reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a desk pad constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan v1ew thereof,
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section on line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a central longltudlnal section of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a transverse section on line 5 5 of Figure 1, 0
Figure 6 is a transverse section on line 66 of Figure 1, and y v Figure 7 is a perspective view of a un1t, forming part of the device shown 1n Figure 1, and attached to the frame to provide the rigid fiat paper support and the paper guidin and tearing means.
l teferring more in detall the drawings, the present invention embodles a r1g1d open rectangular frame of elongated form and com osed ofa back wall 5, a narrower front wal 6, and side walls 7 have forwardly sloping or inclined upper edges, the several walls having inwardly directed horizontal flanges 8 on their lower edges adapted to flatly rest upon the surface of a desk without danger of marring the same.
A b0 t 9 is removably inserted through horizontally alined openings provided in the side frame walls 7 near the upper edges of the latter and adjacent the back wall5, and the roll of paper 10 is journaled upon this bolt between said walls 7 and near the back of the frame. A nut is engaged with the threaded stem of'bolt 9 to retain the latter in place, and this nut preferably conslsts of an outwardly pressed internally threaded hollow boss 11 integral with one of the walls 7 and having a flared inner end, as at 12, adapted to cooperate with the rounded end 13 of the bolt stem to facilitate entering of the latter into said boss when mounting the roll of paper. In this way, the bolt is simply turned for eflecting its removal to permit the insertion of new rolls of paper from time to time, and no separate nut is involved which might become lost.
A flat rigid support 14 is mounted in the top of the frame in front of the roll 10 with its 11 per surface flush with the upper incline edges. of the side walls 7, and this support has depending flanges 15 along its side edges adapted to flatly engage the in ner surfaces'of said walls 7 to facilitate rigid attachment of the support 14 to the frame. The support 14 has its forward end extended forwardly beyond the front wall 6 and curved downwardly and rearwardly with, its forward end edge substantially abutting the wall 6, thus forming an open rounded guide 16 around which the paper is passed as will presently become apparent.
Provided rigidly upon the forward and rear end portions of the support 14 are transverse guide loops 17 and 18, and formed in the front wall 6 at the bottom of guide 16 is an elongated horizontal slot 19. Thus, the paper is extended from the roll forwardly in the frame beneath the support 14, is then passed out through slot 19 and turned upwardly around guide 16, and from guide 16 the paper is drawn over the support 14 rearwardly beneath the guide loops 17 and 18. It is thus apparent that the writing may be readily performed on the portion of the paper disposed on the inclined support 14 between the loops 17 and 18, and b pulling rearwardly upon the free end of t e paper it may be fed from the roll with the used part moving away from the writer. The used paper will thus be out of the way, and continuous writing is permitted on any desired len h of the paper.
Exten in upwardly and rearwardly from the rear en of the support 14 is an extension 20 adapted to direct the free end of the paper upwardly, and extending upwardly and rearwardly from the rear edge of loop 18 is a plate 21 under which the paper passes. The plate 21 extends slightly higher than the extension 20, and the latter has a central finger notch 22 in its upper edge, thus facilitatin grasping of the end of the paper for feeding the latter rearwardly. The u per edge of plate 21 is straight and at rig t angles to the length of the paper so as to form a convenient edge against which the paper may be readily and neatly torn to remove or detach a used length of the paper.
Due to the open form of guide 16, it may be used as a pencil rack, and a forwardly and upwardly curved flange 23 may be formed on the forward edge of loop 18 so thalt the latter may be used as a pen or pencil rac The advantages and use of the invention have been explained above so as to be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art, and minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
1. In a desk ad, an 0 en base frame, means to removagly journaFa roll of aper upon a transverse horizontal axis withmthe rear part of the'frame, said frame having a front wall provided with a horizontal elongated slot, a flat rigid pa er support secured in and closing the f orwar art of the top of the frame, transverse gui e loops for the paper provided on and above the forwardand rear portions of said paper support, and upwardly and rearwardly extended plates on the rear edges of the paper support and the rear guide loop between which the paper may be passed.
2. In a desk paid, an open base frame, means to remova 1y journal a roll of paper upon a transverse horizontal axis within the rear part of the frame, said frame having a front wall provided with a horizontal elongated slot, a fiat rigid paper support secured in and closing the forward part of the top of the frame, transverse guide loops for the paper provided on and above the forward and rear portions of said paper support, and upwardly and rearwardly extended plates on the rear edges of the paper sup ort and the rear guide oop between which t e paper may be passed, the plate of the pa er support having a central finger note in its upper edge.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
