In feeding a box into the guide way 62 or the machine the operator places it therein in such a manner that the main cover will pass under the guide rods 71 and 72, and subsequently the side flap covers will pass under the guide rods 6-1 and 65 and be bent. thereby outwards, and maintained in such position as they are carried along the guide way 62 to the lining inserting position, that is immediately under a lining inserting device 2. The bending outwards of the side flap covers of the box is facilitated by the ends of the rods 64 and GESbeing bent upwards and; inward as shownin Fig. 4. The lining inserting device 2 consists of a plunger plate 3 carried bypins 4, 4 which move vertically a small distance in amaiii lining inserting member 2,, so that the plunger plate 3 can drop by springs out of a recess formed for-it in the base ofithe member 2, and be held suspended underit. The member 2 is mounted on a plunger 24 sliding vertically in a bracket 5 fixed on a rod 6 movable vertically in an upper bearing 8 and a lowering bearing 9 fixed on a standard 7. The rod 6 carrying the bracket 5 and the lining insertiiig member 2 is reciprocated vertically by a lever 13 to, which it is connected by a link 18. The lever 13 is carried by. a fulcrum shaft l l mounted on the standard 25 and provided with a roller 15 bearing on a cam 16 rotated by ash-aft 1 7 driven from the power shaft of the machine through gear wheels 48, 49, 50, 51 and '52, in timed relation to theintermittent operation of the box feeding chain 11.
The lining blanks are cut to form four flap or coverportions seeFig. 5 and are placed on a positioning platform immediately under the lining inserting member 2 which isarranged immediately above a box arrestingposition in the guide way162. This out or be forced platform is constructed of two oppositely movable portions 26 and 27 carried by levers 28 and 29 pivoted to the standard 7 on the shafts 30 and 31. v V 7 'e levers 28 and 29 are provided with rollers 32 and 33 which engage the oppositely disposed inclined or cani shaped pieces 34 and 35 (see Fig. 2) fixed on the vertically movable rod 6, the levers being pulled towards each other so as to keep the rollers 32 and 33 against the cam shaped pieces 34' and 35, by means of a spring 36 of which the ends are fixed on the levers. The platform portions 26 and 27 are detachable from the ends of the levers and are provided with slots 37 and 38 which can slide on bolts 39 whereby their height above the guide way 62 can be adjusted.
lining inserting device 2 and fixed to the bracket 5 are inclined pushing plates 139 (see Fig. 3) adapted to carry the flaps of the lining over the corresponding flaps of the box and force them into gripping contact therewith and at the same time forcing the side flaps of the lining under the guide rods 64 and 65. The lining flap extending over the front side of the box which has no front cover flap is pressed against the front side of the box by a plate 40 (see Fig.2) carried on the end of a lever 41 pivoted at 42 to collar 45 vertically adjustable on an extension 46 of the bracket 5, (see also Fig. 3),- F 2 is a View taken from a machine in' which the travel of the boxes is in the opposite direction to that of Fig. 1.
The other end of the lever 41 is provided with a roller 43 adapted to engage a cam piece 44 fixed on the plunger 24. The roller 43 is held against the cam- 44 by means of a spring 47.
During the operation of the machine a box 0 is placed by the operator on the guides 62 under an arched member (see Figs. 1 and 4) with the front edge of the box leading, so that when the box is carried along by a projection 48 on the chain 11 the cover of the box will be bent downwards by the rods 71' and 72 the ends of which are bent upwards and secured by nuts 73 to the arched members 70. As the box 10 is carried farther along by the chain its side flaps are bent down by passing under the rods 64 and 65. The box now continues its journey with the cover and side flaps fully extended outwards until it arrives immediately under the lining inserting mechanism.
After the box arrives at the lining inserting position, a lining previously placed in position across the platforms 26 and 27 is ferc'ed down into the box by the lining in sertmeniber 2; the downward movement of the rod 6 to effect this operation also, by means of the cams 34 and 35, moves the plat form carrying levers 29 and 28 outwards immediately after the lining inserting member 2- engages the lining, and before the pushing plates 139 reach the platforms 26 and 27 which are provided with cut away portions to allow the member 2 to pass through them when they are closed. The outward movement of the levers 29 and 28 is sufficient to move the platforms 26 and 27 sutlicicntly out of the way to enable the pushing plates 139 to pass below the platforms 26 and ing mechanism to complete its operation.
During the downward movement of the lining inserting device, the members and 2 carry the lining into the box leaving in the first instance its side flaps extending over the sides of the box, these side flaps are however, immediately afterwards engaged by the inclined pushing plates 139 which are then tact therewith as to remain there during the subsequent filling operation. The continued movement of tie bracket 5 carrying the inclined pushing plate 139 is providedfor, after the member 2 is arrested in the box by the plunger 24 of the member 2 sliding in the bracket 5.
This continued movement of the bracket 5 also causes the pushing plates 139 after they have pushed the inner portions of the side flaps of the lining against those of the box, to depress the side flaps of the box and bend the cover flaps, so that on the upward movement of the bracket 5 the flaps of both the lining and the cover will be held under the rods 64 and 65. portion of the lining extending over the main cover is bent over it in the same manner as the side portions by an inclined pushfront flap of the above. W hen the plunger 24 is arrested by the member 2 in the box it also arrests the cam piece 44 and as the fulcrum of the lever 41 is carried by the collar 45 secured to the sliding bracket 5, the roller 43 engages the temporarily fixed cam 44 and so moves the plate 40 to press the front flap of the cover against the front edge of the box.

Also during the initial upward movement of the lining member 2, the plate 3 remains in contact with the bottom of the box and so allows the member 2 to free itself from the lining and admit into the box a small quantity of air and so ensure that the lining will be left accurately in place in the box before the lining nxrchanism tree of the box.
