IMPROVEMENT lN ROLLERS FOR BUFFING SOLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,905, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 10, 1875.
CASE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. JOHNSON, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention, having reference to Rollers for Buffing Soles; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig.2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of a buffing-roller provided with my said invention, which consists in a peculiarmechanism for fastening to the body of the roller its abrasive covering, or sheet of emery or sandpaper, or cloth.
In such drawings, A denotes the roller body, B its shaft, while 0 is the felt covering or jacket of said body. .The shaft is to be so applied to the body as to be concentric therewith, and capable of being freely revolved therein, such shaft being furnished with two cam-grooved heads, DD, fixed to it, and arranged against the ends of the body.
Fig. 4 is an inner side view of one of the said heads, such View exhibiting the cam or eccentric groove a thereof.
A bar, E, provided with a series of hooks, F, and arranged parallel to the shaft B, enters at its ends the cam-grooves of the two heads, and is disposed within a radial cavity, G, made in the body of the roller. The several hooks extend transversely through the roller, and each is provided with a separate rectangular or other proper-shaped headed button or clamp 1, formed as shown in perspective view in Fig. 5that is, with an eye, I), extending down from the plate 0, constituting the rest of the button.

To apply a sheet of sand-paper or emerycloth to the roller, the shaft with its heads should first be revolved, so as to cause the points of the hooks to project beyond the pe- I hooks may extend, it also being again forced down upon the hooks, so as to cause them to pass through it. Next, the buttons or clamps are to be hitched upon the hooks, after which the shaft and heads should be revolved, so as to cause the hooks to be drawn within the roller, and the clamps down closely upon the sheet and into the yielding covering or cushion. In this way the sheet will be fixed to the roller.
I claim l. The combination of the hooks F, the bar E, and the grooved heads D, arranged and applied to the body of the roller and its shaft B, as set forth.
.2. The combination of the eyed clamps I, with the hooks F, the bar E, and the grooved heads D, arranged and applied to the roller body and its shaft, as specified.
