This invention is a tool of the plier type and has for its object the provision of a simple, compact strong and durable tool which may be easily operated and may be produced at a relatively low cost. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In carrying out the invention, I provide handle members 1 and 2 which are shaped to fit comfortably tothe hand of the user and each provided with an intermediate circular hinge portion 3, a jaw 4 extending forwardly from each hinge portion, as clearly shown. The hinge portion 3 of each member is circular in side view and has a width not greater than one-half the width of the handle and jaw immediately adjacent the hinge portion, the handle and jaw members being offset slightly relative to the hinge portion to provide transverse shoulders 5 which are opposed to each other and are adapted to abut and thereby limit the opening movement of the jaws. The jaws are provided in their opposed faces with sockets 6 in which are seated the ends of an expansion coiled spring 7 which tends normally to hold the jaws in the open position indicated .in Fig. 1. Each jaw is constructed near its free end with an opening 8 extending therethrough and in each of said openings is secured a die of any desired form, In the drawings, I have illustrated a die 9 in one jaw carrying pins or punches 10 adapted to enter openings 11 corresponding thereto in the die 12 secured inthe other jaw, this tool being adapted for perforating any materialv in which perforations are desired. The circular hinge portions 3 each has a central axial opening or bore 13 therethrough and a pivot bolt or axle 14 isengaged through the said bores or openings. One hinge member 3 is provided on its inner face with an annular rib 15 tapered outwardly in cross section, as shown clearly in Fig. 4, while the other hinge member is provided with a central boss 16 to fit centrally within the seat defined by the said rib and an annular groove 17 surrounding the boss to accommodate the rib. The member 3 hav-y n ing the rib 15 is also provided in its outer face with a substantially conical socket 18 to receive the tapered nut 19 engaged on the end of the pivot bolt or yaxle 14, as shown in Fig. 4, the said nut fitting ush with the outer side of the hinge element so that the tool will be free of external projections. It
will also be noted that the head of the pivot bolt or axle seats within a similar conical socket or recess in the corresponding hinge member. The interengaging rib and boss facilitate the assembling of the elements ofr the tool and reinforce and support the members at their pivotal connection so that the wear upon the pivot bolt or axle is minimized and bending of the pivot is not apt to occur.
Normally the tool is open, as shown in Fig. 1, the spring 7 serving to hold the jaws 4 apart. When the tool is to be operated, the material upon which it is to act is inserted between the jaws and pressure applied to the handle members whereby they are made to approach and a corresponding movement imparted to the jaws so that the dies will be brought together and the punches forced through the material between the jaws, it being noted that the jaw on each member is out of alinement with the handle on said member and at opposite sidesof a line passing horizontally through the pivotal connection between the members.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: y
A tool ofthe plier type comprising handle members, circular hinging elements formed integral with the handle members, jaws integral with and projecting from the hinging elements out of alinernent with the handle members, dies carried by the free ends of the jaws, a pivot inserted centrally through the jaws, and a nut engaged with the pivot and retaining it in the hinging'elements, one of said hinging elements being provided on its inner `face with a circular outwardly tapered rib concentric with the pivot opening and the other hinging element being constructed with a central boss seating Within 10 GEORGE KUCERA.
