Description

v, H. CLARK.v
y Mowing Machine. l No. 16,788.Y Patented March 1o., 1857.f
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM CLARK, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16,788, dated March 10, 1857.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM CLARK, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and vImproved Mode of Operating Gutter-Bars in -Harvesters 5 and I do hereby declare that the t'ollowing is a full and exact description-of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a partofthis specification, in which- -Figure l is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a View ot' the rear side of the cutter-bars F and J.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of two cutter-bars in harvesters in such a manner as to give each ot'` them an advancing upward and a withdrawing stroke alternately.
To apply my invention it is only necessary to lix permanently to the frame of harvester-s the standard B for the support of one end ot' the crank-shaft M, also the standard D for the support of the pendulums m and '20. The axis ot' m and fw is fixed to the frame of the machine. The cutterblades are diamondpointed, and are attached to the bars F and J by screws or otherwise. The pendulums m and m carry the cutter-har J, and fw and w carry the bar F. The pendulum-bars m and w and m and w', as shown inA Fig. 2, pass through the ends of the cutter-bars, where they are secured by means ot' the set-nuts g, and there being'a nutahove and one below, the said bars F and JA may be elevated or depressed as desired. The shaft-M is driven by the pinion and the spur-Wheel seen in Fig. l, and the connecting-rods C work the pendulumbars m and w and m and w. Said bars at the lower end move forward from a vertical line, thus producing the upward or lifting stroke, and at the same time more or less of a shear` ing out, in consequence of the points of the cutters on the bar J Working intermediately hetween those of the cutters on the bar F. The object ofthe upward advancing stroke is that it meets with less resistance from the standing grain or grass than any other.
I do not claim double cutter-bars, nor an advancing and withdrawing stroke; but
I do claim- Giving to each of the cutting-bars alternately an advancing upward stroke against the grain, as herein/specified.
H IRAM OLA RK.
