P. L. REHDER FISHERMANS HAT Filed Dec. 10. 1926 @nomad Patented July 24, 1928.
.M PATENT OFFICE- H PHILIP L. REHDER, or Bayview, IDAHO.'
FISHERMANS HAT.
Application `filed December 10, 1926. A Serial No. 153,831.
My present invention relates to `an improved isherinans hat ldesigned especially for use in carrying hooks and tackle for use y by fishermen. The primary object of the invention isthe provision of means by which the hooks and tackle of various kinds may be carried by the fisherman where they are readily accessible when needed. The invention contemplates the use of aA specially formed band adapted' either as a hat band forming part of the hat or as an annular band adapted to be slipped over the crown of the hat and retained in position over the band of the hat. The band is of the foldable type and is designed to form an annular pocket in which the leaders may he wrapped, or other parts of the shermans equipment may be enclosed therein. yMeans are also provided for accommodating hooks and liies and for carrying them in convenient position where they are readily accessible when required for use. As is well known by ishcrmen when the leaders are coiled in a small compass and carried in that manner in order to render them in condition for use, it is necessary to soak the leaders in water over night in order that they may be straightened for use. By utilizing the foldable band as a pocket or enclosure for the leaders, the necessity for soaking and straightening out the leaders is eliminated, and they are ready for use when withdrawn from the enclosure or pocket.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, I. have illustrated a complete example of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arrangedaccording to the best mode I have so far ndevised for the' practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of a hat embodying my invention; y
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hat shown in dotted lines, and the features of my invention illustrated in full lines;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of a hat showing the relation thereto of the band and flap; and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view show? ing the means of attaching and carrying a fly and hook.
1i Incarrying out my invention, the leaders or a line indicated by the letter L are illustrated las carried within an annular band whichmay be a converted hat band, and the band comprises ,an inner annular fold l and an outer annular yfold `2, the latter being adaptedy to turn up as indicated in Fig. 1. The ends 3 of the outer fold are provided with snap fasteners 4, and it will be apparl ent that after the leaders have been put in place and the outer fold of the band turned down,'and the ends 3 secured by the fasten-` ers fl, the folded band forms a pocket for enclosing these leaders and protecting them fronithe weather. The leaders are wrapped or coiled uniformly over theinner fold, and are readily accessible when the outer fold has been turned back. An elastic portion 5 of suiicient length is interposed in the foldable band to insure a snug fit of the band over the h at, and it will be apparent that when the band is slipped down over the crown, the band will be retained in correct position by the snug t over the hat, of which the crown is indicated as 6 and the brim as 7.
In addition to the annular foldable band for carrying the leaders, I employ an upright flap S'attached atthe exterior of the hat with its lower edge secured at 9 to the inner fold of the annular band. At its upper end :this flap is provided with a snap fastener 10 which coacts with a complemen* tary .member on the exterior of the hat crown. The flap is of a trianofular shape, and conforms to the exterior shape of the hat and lies against the hat.
Near the upper end of the flap a pad 11 of felt or other suitable material is secured in which the hooks 12 arecarried, and the flies 13 of the hooks extend downwardly and their looped ends 14 are secured in spring retaining clips 15 of a metal strap 16. The felt pad 11 is stitched or otherwise secured at the upper end of the flap, and the metal strap 16 is secured near the lower edge of the flap and parallel with thepad 11. The spring clips 15 are preferably integral with the strap 16, and the clips may be struck up from the metal of the strap by suitable tools. The spring clips retain the looped ends 14 of the, flies to maintain the several flies in proper position, but the flies and hooks are readily (detachable when wanted. The flies and hooks are carried between the inner side of the iap and the outer side of the crown ofv the hat and are thus protected.
, in shape and has its lower edge attached to the inner side of the rfoldable band, preferably at the point opposite the Hap 8. This auxiliary iap also carries its hooks and eyes at its inner side and they lie against the Joining ends :tor4 coact-lon with complemenexterior face of the hat crown.
It will be apparent that these elements or features of my invention may be used as a part of a hat and embodied in the hat structure, or the device of the invention may be utilized as an attachable and detachable ac-4 cessory for the islierinan, and when used by a woodsinan, the device provides'convenient Having tlius fully'described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patestis v n vThe combination of an annular, longitudinallyfoldable hat band for ishernians use,
including an innerfold, an outer fold having separable/fastening devices on its adtary-devicesy on the inner old,fsaid folds adapted to form ka 'pocket for leaders, and said leaders adapted to join the adjoining ends of the annularband when it is in place on a hat. l f
