This-invention is for improvements in or relating to cigarette making machines and more particularly to'a tipping and/or printing mechanism for use on a cigarette making machine of the continuous rod type, and it has for its object the provision of a tipping and/or printing mechanism so connected to the driving mechanism of the machine as to permit of free and easy access to all the driving mechanism.
The present invention consists of a tip: ping and/or printing mechanism for use on a cigarette making machine of the continuous rod type which comprises a plate .or
frame (arranged to carry the tipping and/or printing units) adapted to be hinged or equivalently mounted upon the machine to permit the movement of the same towards or away from the frame of the machine and simultaneously ensure that the tipping and/ or printing units are operatively connected or disconnected from the drive of the machine.
The invention is moreparticularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. -1 illustrates in side elevation a tipping and printing mechanism constructed according to the present invention.

The gumming and printing rollers. 1, 2 and 3 of the tipping and printing units are mounted upon a plate or frame 4, in such a manner that the spindles 5, 6 and 7 carrying the respective rollers extend through the plate or frame in a, direction normal to the surface thereof, in such a manner that the various rollers are arranged on one side of theplate or frame 4 in correct spaced relationship, and the spindles which carry the same extend beyond the opposite face of the late or frame and rotate in suitable bearings 15, 16 and 17. The gear wheels 8, 9 and 10 intermesh with gear wheels 11, 12 and 13 mounted upon-amain spindle 14' supported in bearings 18 and 19 so that the axis thereof lies parallel to the surface-of the plate or frame. The main spindle 14 drives an eccentric 20 which effects the longitudinal movement of the doctor blade 21, 22 and 23 through the agency of an eccentric rod 24 and lever 25, 26 and 27.
The main spindle 14 is provided at one end with a disc 28 having a slot or hole 29 formed in the face thereof. The plate or frame 4 upon which the tipping and printing units are mounted is supported upon the frame of the cigarette machine by hinges 30 which permit the said plate or frame to be swung into a position substantially flush with one face of the machine bed.
When the plate or frame is in this position the disc 28 mounted upon the main spindle 4 is located within the bed of the machine, and in contact with a second disc 31 driven from the main drive of the machme. The second disc 31 is provided (upon the face thereof which lies adjacent to the disc 28) with a yieldingly cont-rolled pin 32 which is adapted to register with the slot 29 formed in the first disc, so as to provide a positive and automatic connection between the two discs and permit the tipping and printing units to be driven by the main drive of the machine in unison with the rod cutting mechanism of the cigarette making. machine so as to ensure that the printing and tipping always occur at the sameportion of the rod relatively to where the cut takes ace. When the plate or frame'is swun away from the bed of the machine the 'scs 28* and 31 hereinbefore referred to are separated, and the tigping'and printing units are disconnected om the main drive of the machine.
Although the invention hereinbefore set out has been described with reference to the tipping unit described in Specification No. 251,322 and the printing unit described in Specification No. 18,327 of 1925, it will be appreciated that other forms of tipping and printing units may be used without departinglfrom the spirit of the present invention, It ough the tlpping and printing units set forth in the specifications referred to are particularly suitable for such a construction on account of their compact nature.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 1. A printing mechanism for use on a cigarette making .machineof the continuous rod type which comprises a frame (arranged to accommodate the printing units) adapted to-be swingly mounted to permit the movement of the same relatively to the frame of the machine, and means operable solely by the movement of the frame to efi'ect both the operative connection and disconnection of the printing units with and from the drive of the machine and ensure that the printing units are always connected in correct phase relationship with the rod cutting mechanism.
2. A" printing mechanism for use on a cigarette making machine of the continuous rod type which comprises a frame (arranged to accommodate the printing units) adapted to be hinged to the frame of a machine to permit the movement of the same relatively thereto, and a pin and slot connection arranged between the driving mechanism of the printing units and the main drive of the machine so as to ensure that the said units are automatically connected to the main drive of the machine solely by the hinged movement of the said frame in such a manner as to run in correct phase relationship with the rod cutting mechanism of the .inachine 3. In a printing mechanism for use on a cigarette making machine, the combination cigarette making machine, the combination with a shaftfor driving printing and tipping units, of a support for said shaft and units shiftable to move said units into and out of operative osition, a second shaft driven from the cigarette making machine, and means effective to connect said shafts in a single relative angular position only on movement of said support and units into operative position, whereby the correct phase relationship between the printing mechanism and the rod cutting mechanism of the machine is maintained. 7
