CENTRAL LUBRICATING APPARATUS r03. s rnsr LUBRICANTS.
Application filed March 9, 1927, swarm). 173,939, and i Germany December lfi, i925.
For the central distribution of oil lubricating apparatus with piston pumps have become known, in which with the aid of a common cam disk the pump pistons are moved up and down and the pressure-channels as well as the motion-channelsof the pumps are positively controlled by a cock body connected to the cam disk. The adaptation of such form of construction to central lubricating apparatus for stiff lubricant is difiicult in respect of the uniform and secure feeding of the stifflubricant into the several pump cylinders. As the stiff lubricant does not flow into the pump cylinders like oil, means must be provided, when constructions commonly used for oil have to be used, which supplies from the lid pressure to the stiff lubricant in the reservoir. Such mechanisms increase not only the cost of manufacture of the lubricating apparatus but they make diflicult the adjusting of the conveying efliciency of the several pumps so that it remains permanently uniform.
In order to suck the stiff lubricants directly from the reservoir, the suction channel common to all pumps ends, according to the invention, in a suction-head arranged in proximity to the bottom of the reservoir and rotatably mounted and positively connected with the rotary cam disk serving as driving elements for the pistons, and covered by a screen.
This arrangement of the suction head in the reservoir for the stiff lubricant prevents the formation of a funnel in the stiff lubricant and merging at the upper end into the free space of the reservoir so that through this funnel air would be conveyed instead of .lubricant. The suction-head which is permanently rotated is forced to withdraw stiff lubricant permanently at other points so that itis prevented from sucking a funnel out of the stiff lubricant. Consequently the comparatively low sucking force of a small pump piston is sufficient to fill securely the whole pump cylinder with the required quantity of stiff lubricant prior to the reversing to working stroke.
An embodiment of the invention is shown by way of example in cross seotionin the only figure of the accompanying drawing. I The cam disk 1 is driven from the driving worm 1 through the intermediary of a worm wheel 2, 3 the cam disk being made in one piecewith the top into acock body 5. The cam disk 4 alternately raises and'lowersthe pistons 7, the cockbody 5 connecting positively the pistoncyhnders 10 alternately with the sup- 1 ply channel 11 and with the pressure channel 12 by meansof its passa es 8 and 9. Central lubricating apparatus 0 hitherto used exclusively for oil.
This invention has for its object to make apparatus of this typeadapted to be used for stiff lubricant without substantial mechanical additions. ,With this object in view the suction channel 11, which is designed to supplythe stifi lubricant from the reservoir 13, comprises a suction head 14. This suction head has no suction holes in the directionof the central line of the reservoir 13. All these the worm wheel2 and it merges at this type have been suction'holes are arranged close'to the wall V of the reservoir 13. The suction head 14, being further connected with the cam disk 4 or with the cock body 5, is permanently rotated. In this manner itis ensured that in proximity to the suction openings neither funnels can be formed which extend through the lubricant up to the air spaceabove the same, nor even small air-filled spaces.
Whilst the oil, owing to its little viscosity,
flows in continuously and avoids formation of hollow'spaces, stifi lubricant has the ten-' dency to form such hollow spaces and funnels which, owing to the little volume of the several pump bodies and to the comparatively low suction force resulting therefrom, would make the entire conveying efficiency and lubricating work of the apparatus incalculable and uncertain.
I claim a In a central lubricating apparatus for stifl'. lubricant in combination with a reservoir for stiff lubricant, a number of piston pumps, a driving mechanism, a cock plug made in one piece with said driving mechanism and having a suction channel common to all piston cylinders, a suction head in said cockplug rotating'with the same and connected with said suction channel, all the perforations of said suction head being arranged onthe sides of sald suction head which projects int-o said reservoir so that the stiff lubricant is permanently sucked off from otherpoints of the mass in said reservoir.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALFRED'SCHLOSS'HAUER.
