UNITED "STATES JOSEP A. BOGDONAWICH, or RINe'rowN, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEGETABLE Curran;
- L Application filed January 14, 1928. Serial No. 246,888.
This invention relates to vegetable cutters and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind particularly in-.
tended for use in slicing potatoesiii a manner to materially reduce the cost of labor and to minimize any possible injury to the operator. r .e i 1,
Another object of the invention isto provide a device of this kind comprising a rotating cutting element together with a chute a for delivering a potatoor other vegetable to said element to be cut, said rotatingcutting element being mounted in a mannerpermitward or from said feeding chute.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a cutter .ofthis kind providedwith means to facilitatetlie discharge of the cuttings and particularly. in amanner whereby the same maybe readily collected within a suitable receptacle, thus materially increasing the efiiciency of the device.
The invention consists in the details ofconstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved vegetable cutter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, lessexpensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully setforth. a
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. g
In order that my; invention m'aylv be the better understood, I will now proceed to describethe same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Y Figure '1 is a view in perspective of a vegetable cutter constructed in, accordance witl J anembodiment of my invention; i I a,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in side ele vation illustrating the means'. herein disclosed for clamping [the deviceiin applied position an associated table or other support being shown in section;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary vertical sec- 7 tional view taken through the upper portion of the device as illustrated in'Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the upper'portion of the:
structure in. Figure 1'; u
Figure 5 is a view in elevation ofthe cover member. as herein embodied;
Figure 6 is a view in rearelevation of the cuttin or slicing element as herein emr e e, a
Figure is a detailed sectionaljview illustrating the mounting'of the cutting blade with respect to a slot in anassociated disc; I
As dISClOSQd' in, the accompanying drawings, 1' denotes ,a base plate having associated therewith a well known type of. :7 clamplng, means, generally indicated at '2,
whereby the devicev in its entirety maybe properly engaged with a marginal portion ofa table or other desired support; Ex-
tending upwardly from theplate l and disposed transversely thereof is awloop. frame 3 A of requisitedimensions, said frame 3 being I brazed or otherwise fixed to the plate, 1., Thisframefi is of a design to provide'the;
straight side portions a;alth0ugh this is not entirely essential to the;'efiiciency of; the device.- I Arranged fore and aft of the frame 3 are the horizontally disposed and substantially U-shaped brackets 5 and 6, theside members 5 of the forward bracket 5 being herein disclosed of alengtli greaterethan the side? members 6 of the-bracket 6. The extremi-. ties of the side members 5 and 6 of both of the brackets are provided witlr the out-,, wardly disposed and substantially, perpen-;
dicularly related feet 7 which have direct contact with, the portions of the frame 3. adjacent the upper ends of said straight poi tlons and through which are directedtlie. headed membersjor bolts 8 also disposed through the portions a of the frame 3 whereby, through themedium 'ofthe coacting; nuts 9 engaged with the bolts 8, the brackets and 61 are-firmly engaged with.
and supported by the frame 3. UThis mounting of thebrackets 5and 6 arrange thev same substantially in alignmentor-coplanar one With the other.
The intermediate members 5 and 6 of the brackets 5 and 6. provide mountings for the shaft arranged at substantially the -lon-. gitudinal; centers of said intermediate members 5* and 6 v and bridging the space therebetween. Mounted upon, the shaft 10 and atr a point substantially between the portions V a of the frame 3 is a disc llprovided'therethroughwith a pair of substantially opposed and radially d rected slots 12 each OfWlllCh having associated therewitha cutting blade lewhereby, upon proper application of a potato or other vegetable, the disc 11 upon its rotation will result-in an efi'ective slicing of the vegetable.
V .The disc ll is t'reely mounted upon theshaft 1.0 butitsperipheralportion is fixed, by the bolts 15 or otherwise as maybe preferred, to the inwardly disposed feet 16 car.-
ried by the outer extremitiesof the arms 17.
These arms 17 are carried by a hub disc18. This hub disc 18 is spaced a desired distalce from the disc 11 and the arms 17 are disposed on a requisite incline to compensate for such spacing. Threaded upon the shaft 10 at opposite sides of the hub disc 18 and in clamping engagement therewith are the nuts 19 whereby this hub disc '18 is fixed'to the shaft 10 forrotationtherewith. These nuts 19 also provide a means whereby the hub disc 18 together with the disc 11 may be con venientlyadjusted in a directionlengthwise ofthe-shaft 10 as the necessitiesof practice may require.
Freelymounted upon the shaft 10 and interposed between the outer nut 19 and the intermediate portion 6 of the bracketG is a sleeve or bushing 20 and also mounted upon the shaft 10'but outwardly of this intermediate portion 6 isa second sleeve or bushing 21. engagement with the a portion of the shaft =10 outwardly of the sleeve 21 which snuglyengage-s between said portion fi -and the appliedhandle member 22.
The outer end-portions oftheside member-s5 of the bracket '5 have secured thereto the upwardly and inwardly inclined arms 23, the-upper end portions of which being continued by the upwardly'inclinedparallel arms 24 disposed in the same general'direction as the shaft 10. Interposed between these arms 24 is'a feeding chute 25, the side marginal portions of whioh being-secured to the arms. 24: through themedium of the'bolts 26 or the like. The mounting of the feed ing chute 25 is such as to have its inner-or lower end terminate in'relativelyclose proximity to-the disc '11 so that theknives carried by the-disc will have proper working engagement with the potato or other vegetable placed within'the "feeding chute. The
cuttings made by the knives of the disc 11 are adapted to be discharged withina suit- .able receptacle or container placed'adjacent to the'device and this collection ofthe cuttings is assured by a depending chute 27 of a scooplike type having its "upper portions anchored, as at 28, to the side members 5 of the bi'acketf), said fastening members 28 being also included'inthe anchoring meansfor the arms 23. .This depending chute, 27 when applied has its 'face opposed to the intermediate portion 5 of the bracket 5.
A cover member C is disposed over the upper end of the depending chute 27 and is of such configuration'as to readily extend over the disc 11 and provide sufficient clearance'for'the requisite admission of the vegetable to be out or sliced. The outer end portion ofithe cover C isp'rovided with ade- An operating handle 22 has threaded.
pending flange 29 having in its .marginal portion a cut out portion or recess 30 to compensatefor the shaft 10 while the inner end portion of the cover C atthe opposite side thereo'fis provided with the depending feet -3 1;-having.0pen slots 32. Through the medium of these open slots 32 the feet-'31 are :readily :engaged: with .the headed members by reason of the convenience and-facility with 'which it maybe assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some; change-andmodiiication without departing from the principles and-spirit thereof and for this reason I do not "wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and *formation of the several parts *here'in shown in carrying out-my'invention inprace tice except as hereinafter claimed.
