This invention relates to conveyers, of that type to be used in construction work on roads, in building tunnels and like uses, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a conveyer of the class referred to with means, positioned at the lower or material receiving end of the belt or elevator, to prevent mud and dirt from 1 getting on the inside thereof and adherlng to the roller for thebeltand further for cleaning any; adhering dirt from the roller duringthe revolving thereof, whereby the conveyer will not become'clogged and its operation retarded.
Further 0b ects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a shielding and scraping meansfor use 1n connection with a conveyer of the class referred to and for the purpose aforesaid and which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient in 1ts use, readily installed with respect to the lower or material receiving end of the conveyer, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.

With the foregoingand other objects in view the invention consists of thenovel construction, combination and. arran ement of parts as hereinafter more speci cally described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but itis to beunderstood that changes, variations aridmodifications can be resorted to which fall within. the scope of the claims hereuntoappended. Figure 6 is a side elevationof one-of the shields or dirt guards. 1 7 Referring to the drawings in detail 1 and 2 indicate the foot blocks which are placed at -the lower or material receiving endofthe conveyer. The blocks 1 and 2 are arranged in spaced relation and are formed with lat erally extending apertured lugs -3, through. which extend holdfast devices 4101' securing the shoe 5, against the upwardly inclined part 6 of the bottom of the said blocks. The
shoe 5 projects laterally from each of the blocks. The side bars of. the "conveyer body are indicatedat 7, 8 and the foot blocks 1 and 2 are connected in any suitable manner to the lower ends of the side bars 7 and 8. Each of the foot blocks'includes an upstanding lug 9 carrying an adjusting screw 10, see Figure 1. Mounted upon each of the foot blocks is an adjustablesupporting plate 11, provided at its rear end with an upstanding apertured lug 12, and with the wall 9f the aperturethreaded to receive the 'adposting screw .10. Plate 11,is furthermore provided atlits outer v side with an apertured lug 13 extending upwardly fromv the upper face ofthe plate. The plate furthermore is formed with, spaced slots. 14 arranged in a row extending longitudinally of the plate, and, between a pair of the slots 14 a bearing 15, is arranged. Holdfast devices extend through the slots 14 and also through the footblocks for connecting the plate '11 to saidblocks. The holdfast devices are indicatedat16 and in connection with the slots 11, provide for the lengthwiseadjusting' of the plates 11 with respect to the foot blocks 1 and 2. Mounted in the bearingv 15, is the lower roller 17, for the belt orelevator. 18.
Each plate 11 is provided with depending spaced. flanges 19 which overlap the foot which provides a reinforcement for the rod 20 and also assists in maintaining the lugs 13 in spaced relation. Connected with each plate 11 and with a side plate is a dirt guard, referred to generally by the reference 31. The dirt guards are oppositely disposed with respect to each other and are attached to the outersides-of theplates 11 and side- plates 25, 26. The
- dirt guards are bodily shifted with the plates 11 and the plates 11 are shifted for the purpose of taking up; the slackjin the belt or ielGVfttOl 18. wEachydirt guard comprises a-vertically disposed upperportion 32, a vertically disposed-*lowerportion 33-and an inwardly extending and upwardly inclined intermediateportion 34'. The'upper portion 32 ata point between its vertical center andrear end is formed with a lengthwise extending slot 35. The lower end portion 33 at a point between its vertical eenter and its rear or -l5'ower end is formed'with an opening "36.
The guard 31 at apoint between its vertical center and its upper or forward end is ,formed with an invertedU-ishaped cut-out part3? which extends from the lower edge of the guard and. partly through the intermediate portion 34 and said cut-out part-forms a clearance fora'bearing 1 5. The upper end portion 32 of the guard is secured to a side plate by the holdfast device 38 and which extends through the slot 35. The hold'fast device 38 and slot 35 provides means where by the guard can be adjusted lengthwise of that'side plate towhich the guard is "connected. The opening 36'is provided for the passage of. the tie rod 20, and a clamping nut on an end of thetie'rod 20, clamps the lower end portion'33 against the lug the dirt 13, see Figure 3;; The guard 31 "is of approi priate length and provides a shield which is interposed between the lower end of the side plate-andalplate 11. The side plate projects beyond the' lower end of a side bar-rand the guard is positioned at the lower end of the side bar, see Figure 4E.
The means for scraping or cleaning the roller .17 is supported from the pair of plates 11 and is positioned forwardly with respect to the roller 17.

It is thought that the many advantages of a means for guarding or protecting or shielding the conveyor belt of a c'onveyer machine of the type referred to and also for scraping the lower roller for said belt, as

In a conveyor, in combination, a pair of side plates, a pair of adjustable lower belt roller supporting plates positioned below and outwardly with respect to said side plates, oppositely disposed guards connected to said side and supporting plates, a. lower belt roller scraping means connected to said supporting plates and bodily shifted therewith on the adjusting of said supporting plates, and means whereby the guards are carried with the supporting plates on the adjusting of the latter.
3. In a conveyer, in combination, a pair of side plates, a pair of adjustable lower belt roller supporting plates positioned below and outwardly with respect to said side plates, oppositely disposed guards connected to said side and supporting plates, a lower belt roller scraping means connected to said supporting plates and bodily shifted therewith on the adjusting of said supporting plates, means whereby the guards are carried with the supporting plates on the adjusting of the latter, and means to provide for the adusting of said scraping means independent of the adjusting of said supporting plates.
4. Means for protecting the lower side portion of an endless conveyer belt to pre vent the entrance of dirt and mud into the belt consisting of a guard extended over said side portion and formed with an upper and a lower end portion" and an intermediate portion, said upper end portion inrespect to saidlower end portion and said intermediate portion extending inwardly and at an upward nchnation and integral with said end portions, said upper end portion provided with a lengthwise extendingslot, said lower end portion with an opening, and said guard further having an inverted U-shaped cut-out portion extending through the lower end portion and partly through the intermediate portion.
