Description

July 17, 1928.
I G. L. CHERRY SILL FLASHING Filed Feb. 7, 1927 27 W g I Patented July 17, 1928.
UNITED STATES i GEORGE L. CHERRY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
SILL FLASHING.
Application filed February This invention relates to flashing and more particularly to adjustable sill flashing.
It contemplates more especially the provision of means for enabling suitable drainage without possible leakage through the jointure of complemental members constituting flashing for windows or like structures.
In the construction of windows, much difficulty has been GDCOl'l'lltOl'OCl in effecting suitable drainage of moisture to a point exterior of the sheathing without any pos sible leakage within the associated structure. The present invention contemplates the provision of means for draining moisture along a predetemii'ied path without permitting any possible lateral flow which permeates concealed portions of the structure especially about the sill of windows.
Moreover, windows are of varyin sizes, and it has heretofore been necessary to make the flashing of a size particularly suited to meet a particular need, thereby entailing much labor and expense in providing flashing for each individual construction.
In view thereof, it is desirable to provide standard complementary units which are readily assembled with ease to constitute flashing capable of being adjusted with ease to various sizes within a predetermined range to meet the usual demands of the trade. This renders it possible to furnish standard units to the trade, which material- 1y reduces the quantity of stock required, and reduces the expense of manufacture thereof to a minimum.
One object of the present invention is to simplify the construction and improve the operation of devices of the character mentioned. I
Another object is to provide adjustable flashing for windows of varying sizes.
Still another object is the provision of means in association with sill flashing to effect drainage of moisture along a predetermined path to an exterior position.
A further object is the provision of sill flashing constituting complemental units relatively adjustable for association with a sill of varying spread.
A still further object is the provision of complemental units having corrugations impressed therein to effect drainage along a predetermined path and to prevent leakage therebetween.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an illus -7, 1927. Serial No. 166,320.
trative embodiment of tion.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a sill construction in association with flash ing embodying features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of flashing constituting a complemental of the flashing shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar View of flashing disposedintermediate the end flashing for overlapping relation therewith in a manner shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of end flashing adapted to be disposed in confront ing relation with the flashing shown in Figure 2.
The. flashing selected for illustration is shown in association with a window con struction comprising the usual stud frame 10 having sheathing 11 on the exterior face thereof, the sheathing 11 being shielded from exposure by means of lap iiing 12 having the usual building paper 13 interposed therebetween.
Windows are usually provided with sills 14 which have laterally projecting edge portions 15 on both sides thereof to abut the exterior surface of the building paper 13 to serve as a surface draining Water beyond the wall 12 of the building. usually disposed in an inclined position to effectively drain. moisture therefrom, it be ing provided with a suitable groove 16 in proximity to the interior edge thereof to receive the bottom of the window frame which assumes a position in abutting relation therewith in its closed position.
It is necessary or at least highly desirable to provide sill flashing in order to pre vent seepage of the moisture through the jointure of the associated members constituting the building construction, as such seepage results in concealed deterioration and decay which is extremely detrimental. Sill the present invenend unit flashing is usually disposed underneath the sill in a position to preclude the possibility of moisture entering the structure internic diate the exterior finish 12 and. the plaster 17 constituting the inner surface thereof.
The flashing comprises, in this instance, a member stamped or otherwise shaped from sheet material to define a flat plane corresponding in shape and contour with the under surface of the sill 14 so that any seep- The sill 14 is 7 lllix age along the surface thereof will be received by the flashing and conveyed to the exterior of the lapping 12. In the present embodiment, the flashing consists of complemental sections 18, 19 and 20 which have a series of corrugations -21 impressed therein to define uniformly spaced troughs 22 extending normal to the walls of the structure to convey moisture from any point of the interior thereof to a position exterior of the lapping 12.
It is to be noted that the member 18 is provided with upstanding flanges 23 and 24 which are bent from the surface of the sheet 18 along adjacent intersecting edges thereof. The flanges 23 and 24 have confronting edges which may be soldered or otherwise secured together to define a corner 25, the flange 23 being (o-extensive with th-einterior'edge'of the member 18 while the flange 24: terminates in the plane of the sheathing 11 1). This formation defines a portion 26 which extends beyond the flange 24 to permit a marginal area 27 to be bent therefrom to define a turned down flange which contacts with the exterior surface of the lapping 12 underneath the sill 14. The flanges 23, 24, and 27 enable the member 18 to be fastened in any appropriate manner in an operable position beneath the sill 1d as by the fasteners 28, the member 18 constituting flashing for a sill 14 of standard construction.
The other side of the sill 14 is flashed in a corresponding manner by means of a similarly shaped member which has a flange 29 on the rearward edge thereof to correspond with the flange 23 on the member 18 as well as a side flange 30 adapted to confront the flange 24- in a manner shown in Figures 2 and 1. The member 20 is likewise fastened to the structure on the other side of the sill in a orresponding opposed position. Intermediate flashing 19 having an upstanding flange 31 on the rear edge thereof, is'corrugated in a manner similar to the flashing described hereinabove to cooperate therewith in overlapping relation so that the corrugations 21 impressed therein will be received by the corresponding corrugations impressed in the members 18 and 19 to prevent leakage therebetween.
With such an arrangement, water received on the flashing will be drained exteriorly of the lapping 12 in that lateral seepage thereon is prevented by the nodes disposed intermediate the troughs 22 wherein the moisture is guided along apredetermined path. The corrugations 21 prevent relative lateral displacement of the complementalmembers, in this instance members 18, 19 and 20, and since the water cannot flow laterally, the possibility of seepage through the jointure pres ent between the overlapping flashing, is avoided. r
oro'ectin ed e turned down to define a flange 27 so as to enable the flashing to be tacked or otherwise secured in position prior to the disposition of the sill 14 thereon.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment ofthe invent ion herein specifically desribed without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof as de scribed in the appending claims.
I claim 2- 1. The con'rbinatioi'i with a sill, of end flashing disposed thereunder, and intermediate flashing on said end flashing to permit a variable spread thereof.
2. The combination with a sill, of end flasl'iiug disposed thereunder, intermediate flashing on said end flashing to permit a variable spread thereof, and means asso ciated therewith to prevent lateral movement between said end and intermediate flashing.
3. The combination with a sill, of end flashing disposed thereunder, intern'iediate flashing on said end flashing to permit a variable spread thereof, and corrugations impressed in said flashing to effect unidirectional drainage thereon. a
1. The combination with a sill, of a plurality of complemental members disposed thereunder to effect drainage along a predetermined path, said members consisting of confronting end flashing, and intermediate flashing disposed on said end flashing to 'enable a variable spread thereof.
5. The combination with a sill, of a plurality of complemental members associated therewith, said members consisting of confronting end flashing, intermediate flashing disposed on said end flashing to enable a variable spread thereof, and corrugations impressed in said members to effect unidirectional drainage.
6. The combination with a sill, of a plurality of complen'iental members disposed thereunder to shield the contacting surface thereof, said members consisting of confronting end flashing, intermediate flashing dis- (irEOR-GE L. CHERRY.
