GARDEN nonnnn. v
' Application filed October 24, 1927. Serial No; 228,196.
' This invention relates to rollers for rolling garden lawns, walks, the greens of golf courses, or other surfaces which it may be desired to keep smooth, the invention having for an object to provide a roller ofthis type which canv be readily manipulated in rolling garden lawns of irregular outlinen; V I For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference. will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of my improved roller.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary central longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, of the handle.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary face view, partly in longitudinal section, of a modified form of handle.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a. transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
As here embodied my improved garden roller comprises the roller proper 10 of ordinary construction and having engaged in the usual manner with the ends of the shaft thereof, a yoke 11 forming part of the handle. Projecting from the centre of this yoke 11 is a stud 12 upon which is swiveled a sleeve 13. The stud 12 projects into one end of the sleeve, whose opposite end is solid and provided with a pair of opposed angular lugs 14. Thesleeve 13 may be engaged with the stud 12 against longitudinal movement thereon by means of a flange 16 on the stud engaged between the end of the sleeve and an inturned flange 17 on a collar 18 fixed on the sleeve.
The lugs serve for pivotal attachment of a second handle section in the form of a bar 20 having a- T-end projecting between. the lugs, 14 and pivotally connected thereto by suitable means as indicated at 22. This bar 20 has fixed to the outer end'thereof a pair of handles 23. 1
With my improved roller uneven strips of lawn or the like can be more readily rolled as the handle can be swung as desired.
' In the modification shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 a sleeve 13 is swiveled on the stud 12 and has formed on its enda pair of lugs such as 14: to which. is pivotally attached a bar 20' corresponding tothe bar 20. Formed on the .end ofthe sleeve 13;e, between the lugs 14;
is an arcuate toothed face 25 curved concen- I tric to the. pivotal axis of the bar 20. Slideable longitudinallyin a suitable central boring extendingthrough-the bar 20 is a rod 26 having on one end a diminished bolt 27 adaptedto engage in the teeth 25 to lock the bar 20 against swinging movement.
- The rod 26 is moved, to lock or release the bolt 27', by the following means. Projecting from the free end of the bar 20, on opposite sides thereof, are ears 30 to which are pivoted the curved arms 31 which cross'one another as shown in Fig. 5. Fixed in the. end of the rod 26 is a pin 32 whichprojects through a longitudinal slot 33 inthc bar 20 and engages at its ends in slots 34 in the arms 31 extending longitudinally of the latter.
To the free ends of the arms nected one end ofeach of a pairv of links 35 which extend toward one another and are pivotally connected at adjacent ends as at 36 to a. plug 37, the links being accommodated in a slot cut into the plug from one sideof the latter and extending from end to end thereof. Rotatably engaged over the plug 37 is a sleeve 39 slotted along one side as at 10 this slot being of sufiicient'width to accommodate the links 35. The sleeve 39 may be held against longitudinal displacement from the plug 37 by means of flanges on the ends of the latter.
With this constructionfthe roller handle.
can be readily locked into a rigid structure orvice versa. and is to be. released the sleeve 39 is turned until the slot 40 registers with the links35 and when the sleeve is pulled, longitudinally 31 are con When the bar 20 is locked of the handle, the arms 31 swing on their pivots,'pulling the rod 26 backward and rewhen the slot 40 is not in registry with the links 35, the latter cannot buckle upon one another to release the bolt.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent .of the United States is as follows: V I 1'. A garden roller comprising a roller proper, and a handle divided longitudinally into two sections, pivotally attached to one another, and means for locking said sections leasing the bolt 27. As will be apparent,
' tions pivotally attached together, an arcuate toothed face formed on the inner section, a locking bolt slidable longitudinally of the other section and adapted to engage said toothed face, a pair of arms hinged to'the said other section and connected to said bolt,
a pair of normally alined links connected to the endsvof said arms and adapted on buckling movement of the links upon one another to swing said armsand release said'bolt, and
releasable means holding said links against said buckling movement.
In a garden'roller, a roller proper, a
handle dividedlongitudinally into tWo sectionspivotally attached together, an arcuate toothed face formed on the innerrsection, a locking bolt slidable longitudinally of the other section and adapted to engage said toothed face, a pair of arms hinged to the saidother section and connected'to said bolt, a pair of normally alined links connected to the ends of said arms and adapted'on buckling movement of the links upon one another to swing said arms and release" said bolt, and
releasable-means holding said links against said buckling movement, said means comprising a slotted plug to which said links are pivoted at adjacent ends, and a sleeve rotat- 'ableon said plug and slotted along one side.
